[quote]"Chlorine binds with all the things it's trying to kill from your bodies, and it forms these chemical irritants. That's what's stinging your eyes. It's the chlorine binding to the urine and sweat."
For their annual Healthy Swimming Program, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) teamed with Water Quality and the Health Council and the National Swimming Pool Foundation to educate Americans about the dangers of pools and how to stay healthy when swimming, Women's Health reports.
Beach went on to say that the cough you can get from an indoor pool is also caused by the chemical reaction. The chlorine isn't what causes the irritation in your lungs; it's pee.

swimming in a sea of piss
Ever been in a swimming pool? Then you were swimming in piss.
Ever drank water? It was once dinosaur piss.
Also, the "chlorine" smell you smell in a public pool isn't the chlorine itself, it's caused by the chlorine reacting with sweat and piss from swimmers.
Ever taken a piss before?
There's piss in it.

Pretty sure it's not exclusively piss. Other bodily fluids like the oil from your skin, sweat and spit cause the smell too if I recall. They went over it once on QI.

Then how come bleach (chlorine) smells just the same when poured in a clean container?

This is why I have an aversion to public pools.
There's also shit particles in there from people's dank asscracks
Don't swim, ever.
Stay on land.
