This is a preview of 3.0 Patch, Originally known as the 2.7 patch. 2.5 release is imminent. 2.6 will feature FPS refinement.
since its a live on stage demo, expect silliness
BTW, you can try Star Citizen's current live build, 2.4.1, for free. Visit scflyfree.com for instructions and 30GB client download.
The netcode in Crusader (the large-world test map) is pretty bad, and it affects performance, but as detailed in the presentation netcode is due for a complete overhaul soon (3.0).
It's taking it's time, but Star Citizen is slowly shaping up to some of the more realistic fantasies people had years ago when they bought packages.
I'm sure the FPS portions of the game are still early, but they have been working on them for awhile. Why does the TTK seem so high? I vaguely remember the developers (Chris himself?) saying they were angling for a more realistic type of combat. It looks a bit tedious right now.
Star Citizen looks really fun, but I don't know if my computer (i7-4770, 8gb ram, gtx 970) could run it at any decent framerate at 1440p at decent graphics, ill probably wait until the gtx 11XX series comes out next year, and then I'll practically build a new computer.
Looks fucking amazing.
Motion blur (or is it just bad fps) pisses me off

I think its a combination of bad FPS and motion blur trying to hide it.

Jesus, the launcher takes up a lot of bandwidth. I can't open any webpages, and youtube lags like hell when I'm downloading.
Not even steam does this at the same speeds.

Motion blur's forced on (but can be disabled by the end player in the live builds), and there probably was some bad fps in the demos -- they're pretty raw and not that different from the internal builds they were forked from and which aren't intended to be properly ready for the public for 2-4 months, plenty of time for lots of QA monkeywrenching.

It's running on torrents, so, yeah, it does a good job of saturating your open connections. You can disable P2P in the menu and go for a much slower non-torrent option by editing the config file (which is dumb but it's rarely a critical problem except for, say, people on university resnet with P2P blocked entirely).
It's amazing how far it's got to from it's original conception. I'm still skepetical as fuck about it but i would be lying if i said i wasnt interested at it.
Poor Jared, he has such an abusive boss
a few things i want from this
1. hitchhiking everywhere, landing seems nervewracking
2. being able to snipe people from outside of stations and shit. i want to be able to assassinate people in elevators
God damn this launcher lags the fuck out of everything.
I can feel my dick trying to reach my ass right now.
I need this game.
If you want to limit DL speed for star citizen, you click the gear on the top right when your downloading and limit the dl speed

I know absolutely nothing about the game. From what I see there's online play and you can play the campaign in coop is that right?

Basically there's going to be a single player Wing Commander style campaign which will release first, then an X/Eve-like MMO mode.

Technically, it's two different games.
- Star Citizen, aka the Persistent Universe (PU), is online-only and is an MMO. It's what most people refer to when they say SC.
- Squadron 42 is the single-player storyline campaign, and is the first in a trilogy. Basically the spiritual successor to Wing Commander.
The campaign was originally promised to be drop-in-drop-out co-op, Dark Souls style, but then the devs realized that this makes no sense for a tightly-written story and would be very disruptive. So, instead, there will be co-op versions of the storyline missions provided separately (and not immediately with the launch of the campaign, as of last word) for people who want to co-op the missions as promised.

the 'bad guy' players all looked to be wearing heavy outlaw armor, which could mean armors actually add health at this point instead of just being some cosmetics for sake of showing what's modeled up. TTK still felt a bit tediously long so it's likely the health pool was larger than they expected, or the more likely answer, the demo was buggy

theres a sniper in the game already and people let you ride in their ships whenever
they added a improved automode in 2.5 where all you do is hold a button to land. it immediately grabs a landing point and automatically drives you to the point.
you arn't really gonna be able to 9/11 buildings on cities either as theres a in-lore safety feature where autopilot takes over if you try to veer off course (this doesnt count moon bases like shown, feel free to 9/11 those)

Why is the download speed so garbage for this launcher
Why is the download speed so garbage for this launcher
The answer could be a few different things. What kind of speed are you getting that's "garbage"? Also, preemptively, the launcher uses torrents, make sure your ISP/connection won't pitch a fit over that.

I've been extremely skeptical of this game, but I'm gonna take it for a spin and see. My main concern about this game (aside from just not living up to the expectations) is that it's gonna end up a being so complex and and inaccessible that you'll be forced to dedicate huge amounts of time to get any enjoyment out of it, or be forced to join groups to be able to do anything fun.
EDIT:
Already I'm running into trouble, not getting my account verification

You're supposed to be able to specialize in a certain field. For instance if you want to only play the FPS part, you can get by fine without having to learn to pilot ships or trade. So I wouldn't really worry about complexity.
If anything, complexity is one of the main interests of the game, people who want to diversify their experience will be able to do so as well.
Im glad i bought the freelancer ship when i did.
This game is slowly but surely shaping up to be the space-traveling mmo game that i want, EVE scratched that itch for a while but it wasnt quite what i wanted.

Tried over http and torrent. Cant get higher then 1 mb/s most of the time
im still being cautiously pessimistic just cuz i dont want to get disappointed when it releases, but after the shitfest that was no mans sky i feel i can at least be confident that it can't fuck up that badly

If you're waiting on an email to activate your account, there can be a bit of a delay on these, especially during free-fly periods where tons of people may be signing up. It may also go to your spam folder.
Tried over http and torrent. Cant get higher then 1 mb/s most of the time
Yeah, I'd say that's kind of a garbage speed, assuming your actual connection can handle much higher. It's really hard to judge why a torrent is going slow, because it could be the seeders, the Internet traffic, or congestion at your own ISP. It opens lots of connections, so this could potentially interfere with things.
Like everything else, the launcher is an ongoing work in progress. Especially while they work at getting delta patching implemented -- turns out it's difficult to delta patch files when you're dealing with encrypted gigabyte-sized blobs. Change one bit in the raw files and the encryption output changes completely for the entire blob.
All I can think of to suggest right now is to give your modem/router a reboot if it's been a while since they've been restarted, and to turn down the speed in the launcher to half your rated bandwidth just to see if it can avoid saturating the connection and bogging it down.
One note: If you go into the launcher and uncheck "P2P", you're still downloading the game via torrents, you're just downloading it directly from the CDN and not seeding the files you have to others. To force straight HTTP downloading, at least as of the last time I messed with it, you have to edit the launcher's configuration file to force HTTP-only downloading. If your ISP fucks with torrents, this may be necessary; ask me how to edit the settings if that's the case (via PM or here or in the SC megathread).
Aaaand... nope, can't run the game at a tolerable FPS with a 4690K and 970. And I keep getting kicked out.
Guess I'm remaining pessimistic for now.
Aaaand... nope, can't run the game at a tolerable FPS with a 4690K and 970. And I keep getting kicked out.
That's actually quite impressive, I manage 50-80FPS with low 40's every now and then on an i7 950 and a GTX 560 Ti. I'm running it in windowed mode on top of that. With huge amounts of shit in the background.
I'm hoping the performance will increase as they actually start optimizing though, and I really hope the little byline they said about improved camera tracking means the camera's actually going to get to an acceptable level.
I really hate games where their solution to a "realistic" camera is to just bolt it onto the eyes of the player model, such a thing usually makes the controls feel so damn clumsy that it becomes painful to play.
