Cool! Hopefully the subject matter is actually ended, though.
It's good that the NSA is actually coming out and being honest about things.
See people, there are people in our government, not machines wishing to control us.
I think I like this guy a bit more now.

The only reason for this happening now is that they got caught.

Actually, it states right there in the document that these were set to be declassified in 2036. So, you're wrong.
There are a fair few redacted blocks...

You know normally I wouldn't don the tinfoil hat. But you people really need to be raising an eyebrow to say the least. Your Government really does have ulterior motives and despite the fact that the NSA or CIA really has no "stigma" like the KGB, Stasi or Gestapo. It's still looking over your everyday lives for subversive activity and is essentially a secret police.
It might not be as extreme in it's methods publicly, but it's still something to be looked at seriously.
Its just going to be meta data (Pen-Registers)... everyone thinks its Title III data that they collect

If someone accuses a government agency of misconduct, officially releasing documents to replace speculation and sensationalism seems a pretty reasonable move to me. It's hardly 'getting caught' if the accusations are inaccurate to begin with.
You wouldn't say 'they're only doing it because they got caught' if the Air Force declassified Area 51 documents to dispel rumors of alien landings.

'Officially released documents show reasonable procedures for intelligence-gathering' doesn't quite grab headlines or attention the way 'LEAKED SECRET DOCUMENTS SHOW NSA SECRETLY SPIES ON EVERYONE ALL THE TIME' does.
Releasing what we already know or could guess at is not being transparent, its trying to save face. This and the general at DEFCON shows that they're trying to head this off before it becomes an issue; we shouldn't allow rhat.

We need more articles in SH about topics that people can get angry about, we must be able to sustain the forums off of raw, pure pressed malice and general discontent. Otherwise, Garry will have to actually pay some of his Scrooge McDuck style swimming pool to keep the forums hosted.

Maybe it's because unlike the KGB, Stasi, or Gestapo; the NSA and the CIA don't drag you and your family from your house at night and force your into coal mines, simply because you voiced an opinion against Obama.
