For this we are commonly referred to as the Blue Planet. An invading Alien force, or an astronaut stricken with severe Alzheimer's might assume the dominant life form of earth lived in the sea. Let's get down to business. General Information -Five Oceans 71% of earths visible surface. produces about 90% of the worlds oxygen. Deepest known area is the Mariana Trench at 10,923 meters(6.787 miles) Average depth is 3,790 meters (12,400 feet) The Oceans The ocean is separated into five sections: -Atlantic Ocean -Pacific Ocean -Indian Ocean -Arctic Ocean -Southern Ocean Zones of the Ocean -Epipelagic Zone-200 meters (656 feet)- This is the surface, This is where most ocean going life lives because it's got access to the surface, and sunlight. -Mesopelagic Zone-200 meters (656 feet) to 1000 meters (3281 feet)- There's some light here, but not enough. I guess you could say its like one of those really dark nightclubs. There's still plenty of fish here, some equipped with bioluminescents. These fuckers know how to party. -Bathypelagic Zone-1000 meters (3281 feet) down to 4000 meters (13,124 feet)- These guys are pretty much loners. Animals that live here and deeper I like to call "Gods mistakes". It's know question why, these motherfuckers are ugly! Most are black and red, and contain bioluminesents. -Abyssopelagic Zone-4000 meters (13,124 feet) to 6000 meters (19,686 feet)- It's cold as a motherfucker down here. All the fish that live down here are hardcore ugly. -Hadalpelagic Zone6000 meters (19,686 feet) to the bottom- Deepest parts of the ocean. These are usually in the trenches. It's fucking cold here too, just barley freezing. 8 tons of pressure per square inch make this the lest desirable aquatic real estate, though some still live here. Though they may be ugly, they are truly awesome. Life in the ocean It's probable that most life originated from the ocean. Life within the ocean evolved 3 billion years prior to life on land. Reefs Reefs are the rain forest of the sea, containing the most life than any other biome of the ocean. Reefs are questionably one of the most important biomes on earth. It's pretty cool that over 4,000 species of fish inhabit coral reefs. That's just the fish, too. Tons of other invertebrates live there, as well. The reef brings in millions of dollars in profit for countries world wide. Whether it be tourism, or fishing. The reef may also hide secrets in medicine. To bad their all dying off. The well being of reefs have been in decline for years now, and it won't be to long until reefs are all whipped out. The cause for this has many factors. They are being killed from pollutants running off from farms, overfishing, climate change, invasive algae, and many other factors. open ocean shit Not to much to say about this. Real big shit live here. Such as the blue whale, the biggest thing to ever roam the earth. This section of ocean is large and open, as it's name suggests. Ships go over it too. The Deep- Gods Ugly Bin Things here are probably better off left alone. The rejects here are usually black, red, or translucent(as previously stated). This is because virtually no light penetrates this deep. So animals will evolve to not be blue, the deepest penetrating color of light on the spectrum. If an animal is red where no red light is present, it's essentially invisible. The Deep Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Sharks and other Elasmobranchii -Oceans bad ass Sharks, everybody know what they are, what they look like, and that they are ferocious beasts of the sea that don't think twice about killing you. No, untrue. Sharks are generally peaceful creatures that won't bother you if you don't bother it. There are around 440 species of sharks, each one unique in its own way. Sharks are generally seen as killers, which deeply saddens me, because I love sharks. Sharks are over fished for their fins, where most of the time the still breathing body of the fish will be thrown back into the water to drown. Sharks contain a valuable 6th sent called Electroreception. The Ampullae of Lorenzini are the electroreceptor organs, and they number in the hundreds to thousands. Sharks use the Ampullae of Lorenzini to detect the electromagnetic fields that all living things produce. They use this to find wounded prey and to generally get around. Interesting fact: if you rub the Ampullae of Lorenzini, the animal will go into a trance, and pretty much allow you to do anything to it(see above picture). Sharks are said to have been around for 450-420 million years. Before land vertebrates(that means you) and many plants. You all know about the Carcharodon megalodon Carcharodon carcharius is the Great White. Rhinocodon typus is the Whale Shark. If you didn't notice The "other Elasmobranchii" I speak of are stingrays. Yes, Sharks and rays are very closely related. They are named after their sharp barbed "Stinger" on their tails that we all know to well about since the death of Steve Irwin. (:gonk:) Stingrays use their flat bodies to shuffle themselves under the surface of the sand to wait for unsuspecting prey. Stingrays also have an Ampullae of Lorenzini, and use it the same way sharks do. Not to much else to be said about these guys. Whales and other Cetaceans Whales are among my favorite sea creatures. They are the biggest thing's to roam earth in all it's existence that we know of. Not only that, but they evolved from land creatures. Imagine, a whale walking around. Bad ass. Baleen Whales- These are the big fellas. Oddly, the biggest things in the sea survive primarily on one of the smallest, Krill. Toothed Whales/Cetaceans- These guys are the ones with teeth... Like Sperm whales. They Eat fish and other meaty things. Whale's are still a mystery. We know so little about them that there's pretty much not to much to add here. The other Cetaceans Orca- Oceans Asshole Orca, otherwise known as Killer Whales, are not actually whales at all, but rather, large dolphins.Cetaceans that are not whales, like Dolphins, Porpoises, and Belugas are all toothed. Dolphins are known to be intelligent. I've heard some people say they are going to be the next dominant species on earth, though most of these people lack a degree in anything. I've also heard people say they are better than human women at having sex, but let's not go into that... Cetaceans have exemplary hearing. They can hear things miles away, as well as determine its exact direction. Some Cetaceans have echolocation abilities. Like a submarines sonar, they can detect the size, shape, surface characteristics and movement of the object, as well as how far away it is. They can hunt in complete darkness. Invertebrates As you probably know, an invertebrate is any animal lacking a skeletal system. The ocean is chuck full of invertebrates, whether it be the crabs, lobsters, and other crustaceans that occupies it's floor, or the jellyfish that flow along with the sea, there is no limit to the amount of invertebrates the ocean has within it's watery grasp. Because I'm sure most of you know the basics about Inverts, I will leave you with some pictures. Sea anemones can move around on their own free will with a foot like structure. Nudibrach are a type of sea slug. Some are poisonous and photosynthetic. Lobsters... mmmmmmmm Jellyfish start life as an anemone, and later sprout out to their final form Squid are known to be one of the smartest animals on the planet Exploration Since man figured out wood floated, we've been exploring the ocean. In 1960, the Trieste was the first, and last manned vessel to reach the Challenger Deep, the deepest known spot on earth. Despite a crack in the window, the men continued to the bottom of the Mariana Trench. They touched down 4 hours and 48 minutes after setting off, and dove 10,911 meters (35,797 ft). Today we have Satellites that can detect the slight variations that the ocean floor exerts on the surface of the water to get an accurate visualization of what the floor looks like. We have advanced sonar ships that scan the floor in a lawn mower like pattern to get an extremely accurate visualization of the floor. This picture shows the difference between satellite, and sonar. The history of ocean exploration is vast enough to make a thread all for itself. Geology I was going to do a section on Geology, but imageshack decided to be a cunt and didn't upload my photo, so I will just leave you wit this bold title. Conservation I feel the ocean is being neglected as a major biome that we depend on to live. I feel to many people are focusing on the fucking rain forest and trees to care about the 71% of our planet that really matters. The fact of the matter is the ocean creates 90% of our oxygen supply, at the same time "scrubbing" the air of carbon dioxide. Not only does it give us oxygen, but it also gives us an abundance of food. Nearly every coastal country profits from the ocean. We make huge profits from fishing. However the fish we are fishing are slowly declining. They may not go extinct, or even endangered, but it's our responsibility to keep it in check, and stop overfishing. Millions of miles of coastal waters are dying because of chemical runoff. Entire reefs have died and become a lifeless wasteland because of it. I'm not suggesting we stop all ocean related operations, I'm just suggesting we keep a closer eye on things. And with that, ladies and gentlemen, Please enjoy my little thang' on the Ocean. If you have any suggestions, or what information on anything else ocean related, just post it and I'll add it. :cthulhu:
Add jellyfish cock
Very interesting thread. I've always loved the deepest parts of the oceans, and the creatures that live within those zones, the bio luminescent ones especially. Also, it'd be terrifying being in one of those deep-sea bathyspheres; one little dent or crack and you get crushed like a can. Though, if you ask me, this would have been better thread music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbSugn0dB4c
Add <-----
You forgot about The Bloop!, as well as other assorted undersea strangeness.
We need more threads like this. I remember when the Titty king used to post awesome science threads like space and stuff.
I like the bone-crushing depths.
Waiting for imminent Bioshock references.
ffffffuck yessssss abyssopelagic zone
:glomp: Awesome thread.
Wow, good thread. Someone's been doing their homework.
I didn't know about the different layers of the ocean. Good thread, sir.
I like the ocean because it gave us silly movies like this
Where do I have a spelling mistake?
Good thread! I approve.
You forgot Mudkip.
Every time I edit something from the OP, the YouTube videos keep fucking up. So each time I have to redo them. This is my excuse for the huge gaps forming between them.
What about the Bermuda Triangle!
Best thread in a while. GD should be like this.
Blue whales are coo. You never really picture them being that big until you actually see one. Massive.
Add jellyfish cock
Jellyfish don't have a cock. Instead they both eat, and excrete waste out their mouth, as well as excrete semen. Narwhals - Monodon monoceros Narwhals are a species of toothed Whale most famous for the males long helical tusk. The Tusk ranges from 2-3 meters (7-10feet). It is actually a Tooth protruding form the upper jaw. Scientists believe the tusk to be a sexual characteristic (size matters, guys!) Or possibly social rank.Narwhals have their rightful place in history because many people believed they had the horn of the Unicorn. Vikings and other traders thought they possessed magical powers and so hunted them. The horns were worth a pretty penny. Queen Elizabeth received a carved and bejeweled narwhal tusk for the cost of a castle, about 1.5-2.5 Million Euros in today's terms. Narwhals live a pretty chill life because it has almost no natural predators other than, Humans, Polar bears, and Orcas. Inuit tribes are allowed to hunt them for subsistence. They feed on fish, shrimp, and squid. Rarely venturing off below 65°N latitude. Since when does Narwhal = whale?
I feel the locks have pushed this back farther than it deserves. I worked hard on this don't let it die that quick. :sigh:
Since when does Narwhal = whale?
Since I said so.
I have a strong dislike for water outside of pools.
I'm scared of whales :saddowns:
I'm just a blob what can I do?
Needs moar crabs. I think you'll agree OvB. Also manatees.
Whatever you do, stay out of the South Pacific Ocean... there's a lot of bad shit there. :lost: Also, 47°9′S 126°43′W* / R'lyeh... :cthulhu:
I'm scared of whales :saddowns:
Hope your insurance covers exploding whale.
