“Godzilla” has cut a monster swath at the Chinese box office, bringing in a huge $36 million on its opening weekend, the biggest opening ever in that market for distributor Warner Bros.
The remake of the classic big lizard tale from Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. has now taken in $248 million from abroad. It's at $191 million domestically, and has now grossed more than $440 million worldwide.
IMAX theaters played a big part in the China haul, generating $4.5 million over the three days — deadlocking it with “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” for the biggest IMAX haul ever.
Aaron Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen and Bryan Cranston star in “Godzilla,” which was directed by Gareth Edwards.
The only remaining major market for “Godzilla” is Japan, where it will open on July 25.
Why does Japan of all places get Godzilla so late?

I think Beijing is in China and not Japan

i think he's referring to this
Well crap guess i should start watching Godzilla now
Anyone here know if it's actually good? I've been thinking about seeing it with some friends with a movie ticket I got and am unsure if Godzilla is really worth it.

It is better than Godzilla'98, but that doesn't say a lot.

It's worth it for the one particular Godzilla kill alone.
And to see what is capable with modern CGI; there are some moments that are truly awe-inspiring
It's a really below average film if you are not easily impressed by the CGI......
It's an awesome movie. I don't get the criticism that it's only worth watching if you're easily impressed by CGI.

Because the acting sucks, save Bryan Cranston but yeah that didn't do much. The story was pretty shallow and while you can just say, "it's a Godzilla film." I'm just telling you watching it as somebody who mildly appreciates Godzilla films it wasn't even cheesy good.
Something I noticed was Pacific Rim had me and my friends roaring with laughter or excitement. We expected the same with Godzilla, and at most that happen was maybe we woke up when Godzilla did one nuke breath.
Why does Japan of all places get Godzilla so late?
Possibly because its a risky market given the whole Godzilla franchise and the last american godzilla film?
The movie was good I thought but they focused way too much on the uninteresting main character while constantly cutting away from monster battles. Godzilla stole the show for me every time he was on screen only for being a frickin' mountain but unfortunately they kept cutting the scene the moment shit was starting to go down.

Because Godzilla needs to workout. He has to lose all this fat that japanese people don't like.

Seriously, this is like taking a few /v/ posts and reporting it as news.
It was so bad other than cranston. Why did they even bother casting such a terrible main charactor.
And all the asian guy did the entire film was stare opened mouth amazingly any time anything ever happened.
i liked it...

it is but 90% of the characters were so poorly acted
i liked it...
I concur. It wasn't as bad as I expected, to be honest.
Because the acting sucks, save Bryan Cranston but yeah that didn't do much. The story was pretty shallow and while you can just say, "it's a Godzilla film." I'm just telling you watching it as somebody who mildly appreciates Godzilla films it wasn't even cheesy good.

Thing is, Pacific Rim is supposed to be a cheesy homage to monster movies. Godzilla is supposed to be more serious than that, and most of the marketing reflected that pretty well. Pretty much from day one Gareth Edwards and the rest of the cast and crew have said "this isn't going to be another cheesy action movie". Maybe if more people had payed attention to that, they would have been able to appreciate the movie more rather than expecting another Pacific Rim when everyone was going out of their way to say that it was going to be the polar opposite of Pacific Rim in terms of monster movies.
That and it's supposed to be more like the original Godzilla, not the subsequent movies. Though the following movies are good in their own right, the first one is more of a message about the horrors of war as opposed to, well, this.

Well I know it was marketed serious. Still was a reason it was boring to watch.
Anyone here know if it's actually good? I've been thinking about seeing it with some friends with a movie ticket I got and am unsure if Godzilla is really worth it.
It's not a good movie in general, Edge of Tomorrow is worth it more in comparison.
However, the small amount of time Godzilla is in this movie is pretty good. So if you are okay with just seeing it for Godzilla and not care about the rest of it, it's worth it.
With the movie doing so good in China this should guarantee Godzilla stomps around China in the sequel. The Chinese audience would go crazy for that.
The Chinese audience would go crazy for that.
iirc they weren't too happy with Godzilla's rampage in Hong Kong back in Godzilla vs Destoroyah.
Granted, yes, Hong Kong wasn't China's yet, but it still didn't get 100% good vibes from the higher ups (again, iirc)
Most underwhelming movie I've seen in a while
Im glad it's successful. It was a pretty well done revival of a great franchise. Hope it does well in Japan (let's be honest, we know it will).

Who the fuck watches kaiju shows for human acting.
[editline]17th June 2014[/editline]
That's like watching porn for plot. [sp]no offence, Game of Thrones[/sp]

Well, I didn't watch Godzilla for the humans.
But I got more humans than Godzilla and the humans, save a couple, were boring as fuck.
way to make your monster movie about shitty mcnoname and his shitty mcnoname average american family and [sp]kill off the only interesting characters 20 minutes into the film while you keep dodging everyhting worth seeing until the last half hour[/sp]
