New changes to UK immigration test - less about rights, more about history

Home Secretary Theresa May is reported to be planning changes to the test taken by foreign nationals who wish to become British citizens.
The Life in the United Kingdom test was introduced by Labour in 2005.
The Sunday Times says immigrants will be told "historically the UK is a Christian country".
The revised version will focus less on the practicalities of daily living in Britain and require more knowledge of British history and achievements.
The paper says immigrants will also have to learn the first verse of the national anthem before they can become UK citizens.

Mrs May is understood to have scrapped sections of the test which dealt with claiming benefits and the Human Rights Act.
Instead potential immigrants will be expected to learn about Byron, the Duke of Wellington, Shakespeare and other historical and cultural figures. The new handbook, expected to be issued in the autumn, will include sections about key battles, such as Trafalgar, and British inventions and discoveries.
A Home Office spokesperson told the BBC: "Putting our culture and history at the heart of the citizenship test will help ensure those permanently settling can understand British life allowing them to properly integrate into our society."
Alp Mehmet, vice chairman of the Migration Watch think tank, said it was the right change of emphasis.
"It will be looking at people for what they can contribute and give an idea of the country they are coming to, be it our history, culture or ways. It is right they should have an idea of that rather than something that encourages them to see what they can get out of the country," he said.
The handbook, currently in draft form, is the basis of a 45-minute test which potential citizens can take at one of 90 centres around the UK.

Doesn't sound bad really.
But I don't even know about The Duke of Wellington. :(
I never understood these tests, especially when half of the population within the country don't really know the history themselves
It's already a dumb test
Hell I'm British and I still failed the current test as it is when I went to see what it was like.
I fail to see the problem with this.

More like 90%.
The questions are ridiculous.
Theresa May is doing this. No surprise - she's batshit insane.
If any from the US doesn't know who she is, she is the person who approved the extradition of Richard O'Dwyer (TVShack owner) to the United States.

Where is it?
Let's select people for what they know about our country instead of what they could bring to make it a better country. :downs:

There's an example test here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/4099770.stm

Closest I could find:

This seems right:

So now immigrants now more about British history than the Brits. That won't help them integrate. Which, I imagine, is the main motive behind this. If it keeps them ignorant of their rights and responsibilities it'll be easier to deport them, which the great unwashed will love. Hey presto, more votes.
But I don't even know about The Duke of Wellington. :(
IIRC He led the British in the battle of Waterloo against Napolean.
Oh great, we're now America. Thanks.

wow i got so fucking bored about 3 questions in. so little of it relates to anything about living in the uk. who the fuck knows the ratio of english to scots/welsh/irish? the prime minister won't even know that. what a pointless test
edit: oh wait all that is unofficial. but still, the information you're expected to know in those questions is all from the guide book. what a waste of time
according to those questions it's more important to find out how much your solicitor charges than it is to ensure they're qualified
what

This is a joke, if you ask a majority of British people about history and achievements they will most likely not have a clue what the answer is.
Breaking news: Immigrants no longer required practical knowledge of living in country, instead asked to demonstrate they know how great UK used to be.

"yesssuh mistair officer. i wan live in uk for gweat pwesteege of battul of trafawgar, not for health care or jobs"
bullshit, all bullshit.
fucking, the best part of britain is the fact 99% of people do not give a toss about this sort of bollocks.
it's understanding that basically everything that's a part of our 'culture' is stolen from other countries, and that's what makes it great, it means nobody is running around decrying people as being 'unbritish', because nobody knows what the fuck it is to be british
as long as you can complain about the weather being shite, queue in a long as shit queue and complain about it, and read the paper and complain about the shit in it, you're as british as me.
if they're going to include british history at least put in some of the darker aspects as well
right now it sounds like the immigrants have to regurgitate propaganda before they can get in
Why do immigrants have to know more about nations history and culture rather than laws and language?

Honestly, it just seems like they want to decrease the amount of immigrants that can pass the test, and therefore live in the UK, at least to me.
As it has been said quite a few times already, the majority of these questions couldn't be answered by your average guy or gal actually born in the UK.
Hell I'm British and I'd fail the shit out of the tests.

Its a simple reading test, I cant answer some of those questions but I havent been given the "Life in the UK" booklet.

You can say anyone's culture is stolen, at the core of it they all usually regard the same things as priority.
