A 50-year-old pizza baker from a small village outside Padua, northern Italy, was acquitted on criminal charges of failing to pay child support after a judge ruled that he had done his best during hard times to provide €400 worth of pizzas, calzone and other goods from the takeaway pizza place where he worked. The couple, Nicola Toso and Nicoletta Zuin, divorced in 2002. By 2008, as Italy was hit by a deep economic crisis, the pizza baker, who had since remarried and had three more children, began struggling to make ends meet. From 2008 to 2010 he offered his ex-wife free food instead of the 400 euros a month stipulated in their divorce agreement. At the time, his daughter was 12. "In lieu of money, the defendant offered his ex-wife the same amount of compensation in the form of takeaway pizzas from his workplace, an offer promptly rejected as 'beggar's change'," wrote Judge Chiara Bitozzi in her ruling. With a pizza in the village of 10,000 inhabitants costing an average cost of €5 a pie, the ex-wife could have had the right to take-away 80 pizzas a month - more than two a day. But fed up with the paltry pizza payoff, his ex-wife filed a criminal complaint.
Makes sense. Child support is about providing support to a child; feeding a child is support.

This is painfully Italian. I love it.
Makes sense. Child support is about providing support to a child; feeding a child is support.
Sure, but I can see why the mother would want actual usable currency to pay for things like non-pizza food, clothing, and medicine.
Sure, but I can see why the mother would want actual usable currency to pay for things like non-pizza food, clothing, and medicine.
but pizza can be used as at least two of those things
Makes sense. Child support is about providing support to a child; feeding a child is support.
Other than what the other guy said, you're going to feed a child pizza's everyday for a month? This is just retarded
Delicious.
Other than what the other guy said, you're going to feed a child pizza's everyday for a month? This is just retarded
There are plenty of toppings you can put on pizza, just because you eat yours layered with salami and cheese doesn't make pizza in general unhealthy. [editline]28th May 2016[/editline] Anyway, the guy has little money. It's either this or nothing.
He should've wore a condom then if you don't have the means to support your kid don't have one.
okay. but he didn't, and now he's in this situation. what's he supposed to do, neglect his other kids to pay for the first one?
He should've wore a condom then if you don't have the means to support your kid don't have one.
He had the means to support his kid. This happened way after he had the kid, way after he had the divorce, during the financial crisis.
He should've wore a condom then if you don't have the means to support your kid don't have one.
People's financial situations can change fyi
but pizza can be used as at least two of those things
Pizza makes for pretty good winter wear, there is a wide range of toppings to wear.
Giving items that the child needs to live is the literal exact same as giving currency because now the mother does not need to pay for food for the child. At the end of the day, it's money saved.
Our country is a clusterfuck, but if there's one thing we still get right, it's pizza.
my wife-a, she took everything in the divorce-a all i can do is make-a the pizza
80 pizzas for the child every month
My long lost father, I have found you! [editline]28th May 2016[/editline]
Our country is a clusterfuck, but if there's one thing we still get right, it's pizza.
Don't forget the cars and the shoes!
Is that 400 euros worth of just pizza or the actual child support cost per month? Because that sounds insanely expensive.
this happened in Villafranca, which is like a ten minute drive from here. holy crap [editline]28th May 2016[/editline] can't get more italian than this
Our country is a clusterfuck, but if there's one thing we still get right, it's pizza.
Don't forget being really friendly and funny Italians are good people.
Other than what the other guy said, you're going to feed a child pizza's everyday for a month? This is just retarded
It's an Italian food restaurant, (which wouldn't it just be food in itally?) Anyways they say he provided more than just pizza I'm more concerned about this guy's inability to use birth control, he's 50 and still having children
I don't think this is okay. You can't just expect a kid to eat the same fucking thing all day every day. Let alone the fact that it's PIZZA.

Let alone the fact that it's PIZZA.
Hey, according to the US government, pizza is now a vegetable. Kid's eating healthy. He should be grateful. On a more serious note, you can have a lot of variety when it comes to pizza, and it can meet a surprising number of dietary requirements. Really depends on the pizza in question. I guess what I'm saying is, it's not ideal by any stretch, but it could certainly be a hell of a lot worse.
I'm more concerned about this guy's inability to use birth control, he's 50 and still having children
I don't think he's still having children at the age of 50. If the article is to be believed, he would have to be less than ~40 years old when all his children were conceived [editline]29th May 2016[/editline]
I don't think this is okay.
