Bosnia has experienced its highest rainfall levels since records began 120 years ago. River levels rose all over the country, including the capital, Sarajevo. Maglaj, north of the capital, was cut off by water surging through the streets. Some residents sat on house roofs waiting for help. Military helicopters were employed to evacuate hundreds of people. "The situation is alarming," said Mehmed Mustabasic, the mayor of Maglaj. "We have no electricity, the phones are not working. We are cut off from the rest of the world."
http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/balkans-floods-heavy-rain-causes-landslides-bosnia-serbia-1448745 http://www.thestar.com.my/News/World/2014/05/15/Bosnia-Serbia-hit-by-worst-flooding-in-120-years/ http://dalje.com/en-world/severe-flooding-hits-serbia-and-bosnia/508962 [t]http://d.ibtimes.co.uk/en/full/1378960/landslide.jpg[/t][t]http://d.ibtimes.co.uk/en/full/1378964/zenica.jpg[/t] [t]http://d.ibtimes.co.uk/en/full/1378957/sarajevo-bridge.jpg[/t][t]http://d.ibtimes.co.uk/en/full/1378977/nemaila.jpg[/t] Yeah, well shit.
"The situation is alarming" I feel like that might be just a teeny bit of an understatement
It's like the apocalypse down here. We've never ever had floods like these. An entire city is being evacuated (22.000 people) it's completely under water.
It's raining like hell here as well - hasn't been a day in the past 2 weeks without rain.
Here are some photos from Serbia: And here's a bridge being carried away in Bosnia:
Here are some photos from Serbia:
Holy fuck.
I chatted to my friend in Bosnia. I din't want to post the full chatlog, and it made sense to just cut it up more like a story. Apparently shit is really bad. In Bosnia, 20 towns are hit, my friend described it as a catastrophe, they have just never seen that much rain. It's the most rain ever recorded there. People are loosing lives, and whole cities are under water, there is a lack of food, clothes and basic medical supplies. The rescue teams are overwhelmed. "I just recently got phone lines and internet back, so I connected for a while just to check things out. It should get better" No one knows how long the water is going to stay, his private practice almost got hit, the water came 4 meters from the door. However his cousin wasn't so lucky. The first floor of his house was completely flooded.. The main flood has passed through his area and is now heading towards the northern part of the country, the officials are preparing for a massive flood of two of their rivers which are collecting all the water from the mainland. The nightmare doesn't stop there, all over the country landslides hit, 8 buildings disappeared within a minute. It's the worst catastrophe some of these people have ever experienced in their lives. Even his grandparent's don't remember anything like it. This is the town 40 kilometers from his. The people have been evacuated to higher lands, they stay mostly in gyms and pray it ends good. During the next few days he thinks there will be a shortage of food, because his town is cut off from the world by the floods. He hopes he has enough to last them until the roads clear, or at least enough for the baby. I asked him if I could help and he said "In my country they've got a saying... if you offered help it's just like you've helped." And then told me he will report in later to let me know what's going on, and went offline.
A couple videos from Obrenovac, the town that has been completely flooded. Some areas of the country are already starting to drain the water and clean up. We've got help from the EU via their emergency response program thingy. Full capacity of the police, military and firefighter - rescue units are being utilized on the field. A lot of civilians are helping as well. Situation is still critical in some places, but I hope for the best.
Every time something like this happens I hate to think about all the history that's destroyed by it. Historic buildings, battlefields, museums, classic cars (of which there are plenty in Europe to my knowledge), random items of antiquity in homes, etc. Obviously loss of life is the number one tragedy here but I feel like that comes in second.
Oh wow, no kebab comments … I must say, I'm surprised. I live in Ub, one of the towns that was hit the hardest. We were completely cut off and only accessible by boat or chopper for 3 days. Things are looking up now, but we've yet to survive the upcoming flood wave from the west. Luckily, my house is completely dry and will hopefully remain so for the duration of the floods. Most people weren't as lucky I'm afraid. Let's just hope to god this ends soon. I am thrilled to see all the help we've been getting from our neighboring nations, the ex-Yugoslav republics, our brothers. If anything, misfortune has brought us closer together. [editline]17th May 2014[/editline] For shock factor, this is from a town nearby:
remove water.
Rain stopped, now there are massive landslides. Over 200 houses lost in just 1 town.
I heard about this pretty quickly, I live in an industrial/mining town which has a lot of Bosnians working and living here, so the news spread pretty quick. I can't imagine how shit some of my exclassmates from highschool must feel, first there were the mild floods here which cut off our town from the rest of the country because the roads were flooded, then more rain and floods which caused such a large amount of trees to collapse that we have a permanent increase in wind until a sufficient amount regrows and then their families back home have to deal with these floods which are a hundred times worse and are wrecking fucking everything. Shit sucks.
remove flood
No global warming though.
We have big problems here in Croatia too. The saddest part is that the areas being flooded are the poorest parts of the country.
Oh wow, no kebab comments … I must say, I'm surprised.
That joke has needed to die for like a year now, every time I see it it's just someone that is ignorant about ex-yugoslav states and the balkans going "lol remove kebab guys heh amirite kebab lol"
My grandparents decided to visit at the worst time. They've been stuck the whole time. Fortunately they're safe and they weren't near the worst areas. It's crazy, though.
i wish there was a way for me to help, and not just give a donation of money. Are there any drives for food/clothing available to donate to?
Just heard from my uncle from Bosnia it starter clearing up a lot in his area. But temperatures rose to like 30°C and there will be a lot of mosquitoes and spreading of disease the next couple of days. Someone is playing pandemic 2 over there.
What's worst about this is what's to come. Serbia and Bosnia aren't in the best economic situation, neither regarding growth or debt/GDP ratio (at least for Serbia). Some funds may come from EU and some other countries, but won't be even close to the funds needed to repair the destroyed infrastructure and help the shitload of people that lost their houses.
Friend lives in Bosnia. I really hope he's okay.
The situation in Slavonia got worse on sunday. The draining of water from Bosnia flooded the Sava river and a part of the dirt mound broke, destroying Gunja village in the process that came after. The military and GSS do not know how long will the floods last or how well will the moumds protect our side of the border, but they've already placed Slavonski Brod on alert and evacuated a part of the population. If the city gets flooded it might be the worst flood in Croatia since the Zagreb flood in the 60's. Also, here's a picture from Gunja:
god fucking dammit, prague flooded last year when my mom was there.. she then came home and it then flooded here.. and she just got back from bosnia yesterday.. I'm gonna get some sandbags if this is gonna become a pattern :v:
Where i live everyone talk shit about everything being caused by HAARP and weather control(even though it is possible that sending shit into ionosphere might unintentionally cause crap)
i wish there was a way for me to help, and not just give a donation of money. And since we are a candidate, we have access to it. I'd like to point out that both EU and Russia have helped tremendously by sending their most elite personnel and equipment as well as food, water and other supplies (choppers, boats, vehicles, drainage pumps).
i wish there was a way for me to help, and not just give a donation of money. Are there any drives for food/clothing available to donate to?
I don't think it would be possible to donate food & stuff from the outside right now. It would take too long even if you mailed it to someone, when I order stuff via ebay it takes around 45 days to arrive. I think I saw a donation website somewhere, but if it's legit I don't know. I'm saying that considering that a lot of people are trying to profit from this disaster. Even the "Red Cross" got accused of selling the donations people have been providing. We opened a humanitarian action in school, visited a few towns etc. We've already donated a lot of stuff to people, probably going to go again tomorrow if we manage to collect more stuff. The prices are higher now, it costs like 3-4$ per liter of water. Not to mention you can't even find water in shops at the moment.
Woah, it looks like the situation in Bosnia is even worse then. I just bought and donated 27 liters of water (3 packs of 1.5L x 6) to the Red Cross, it costed 6.2$ in total. There is plenty left in the stores.
We even had iceballs rain here, jesus the weather has been messed up beyond repair. My city has never had a flood but if that does happen then shit gg.
I just saw on the news that two women here in my country organized a gathering of supplies to be donated to Bosnia, they expected to be donated enough to fill one van, but ended up getting so many that the Slovenian Army has to deliver it with ten trucks tomorrow :v:
