Mr Gorbachev said the "absurd" demand was driven by a hunger for publicity.
The deputies - including two from President Vladimir Putin's party - say they were motivated by recent events, particularly the crisis in Ukraine.
Yeah, I bet the Poles, Estonians, Latvians, Lithuanians etc are absolutely heartbroken about the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Also, was it not the case that alot of people in Russia itself wanted to see the Soviet Union collapse?

No, it was extremely polarized.
All countries that end up collapsing because the population either hated it or didn't care about it falling apart.
Examples such as the Roman Empire, most successive Chinese dynasties, the Ottoman Empire, Holy Roman Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire, Russian Empire, etc all pretty much ended up collapsing because by the end most people didn't support the states continued existence (and usually when they collapsed the populations were better off for it).

I don't think "collapse" is the right word. A lot of shit followed the regime change that pretty much nobody wanted.
Holy roman empire didn't end because of that.
The HRE ended because it was a confederation of hundreds of nations that was turned into a confederation of effectively 3 nations within a year.
Prussia, the confederation of the rhine, and Austria.
Its a bit late now don't you think?!

The effective centralized entity broke apart because the constituent parts were unwilling to keep it going (especially Italy). After the high middle ages, most of the various regions of it began to go their separate ways.
The point still largely stands.
maybe it's not collapsed just mutated and soon....
Pretty sure Gorbachev was powerless to prevent the collapse of the Soviet Union anyway. Being locked up and held hostage by a Coup while tens of thousands of people protested in the streets of Moscow.
cmon, why arresting a good guy, he even got nobel peace prize, and started to give some democracy to soviet union
The soviet union collapsed? You'd be mistaken for thinking its still around the way things are going down currently eh?
It's less to do with what the population wanted and more to do with whether the state could suppress the dissenting part of the population. States derive their legitimacy from fear, and a population doesn't fear a state that gets its ass handed to it in wars.
No, it's the people, because as soon as Gorbachev got rid of the Brezhnev Doctrine it meant that people power was able to arise without the fear of the Soviet Army rolling in, a good example of this is the Berlin Wall collapsing.
This is absolutely outrageous.
Gorbachev was the best thing to happen to Russia over the last half-century.
What the fuck man is Putin just sitting around watching documentaries about the 70's and 80's and just becoming ever more butthurt about how it went down or what? what's the endgame here??
Give him asylum in the US.
In case anyone doubted that Putin and his cronies are Soviets.

When the kgb were planning to stop Gorbachev Putin wanted no part in it and left. It is other mps who wanted this not Putin.
Of course it would be people from the communistparty demanding it. I guess the guys from Putin's party are also old soviet politicians.

I think Putin left because he knew who would win. Pick your battles, regroup later.
