All countries that end up collapsing because the population either hated it or didn't care about it falling apart. Examples such as the Roman Empire, most successive Chinese dynasties, the Ottoman Empire, Holy Roman Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire, Russian Empire, etc all pretty much ended up collapsing because by the end most people didn't support the states continued existence (and usually when they collapsed the populations were better off for it).

Holy roman empire didn't end because of that. The HRE ended because it was a confederation of hundreds of nations that was turned into a confederation of effectively 3 nations within a year. Prussia, the confederation of the rhine, and Austria.

After the high middle ages, most of the various regions of it began to go their separate ways. The point still largely stands.

Pretty sure Gorbachev was powerless to prevent the collapse of the Soviet Union anyway. Being locked up and held hostage by a Coup while tens of thousands of people protested in the streets of Moscow.

This is absolutely outrageous. Gorbachev was the best thing to happen to Russia over the last half-century.
