• President Obama Signs Bill To Combat Sexual Assault In The Military
The day after Christmas, President Obama signed a defense bill with provisions to curb sexual assault in the U.S. military. Under the new law, anyone who engages in sexual assault will face dishonorable discharge, commanders are prevented from reversing jury decisions, legal assistance will be provided for victims, and “retaliation” against a victim will be punished. The bill came in response to a Department of Defense report issued earlier this year, which claimed there were 26,000 victims of assault in the military in 2012. In the previous year, 19,000 assaults were disclosed from 2010. The numbers were not comprehensive, however, omitting additional accounts of sexual harassment, or “unwanted gender-related behavior.” The 26,000 figure also excludes quid-pro-quo intimidation, according to which victims are blackmailed into committing sexual acts in return for job security or career advancement. Repeated assaults are also discounted, as are assaults against civilians. According to the Department of Defense, roughly 86 percent of assaults go unreported, as victims fear punishment — including job termination — for speaking out. "We have come too far in our fight to effectively address the crisis of military sexual assault and subsequent victim retaliation to stop now. We see this as a minor setback on the road to fundamental reform.”
why cant I edit things what the hell. Anyway the aljazeera article talks about a section of the proposed bill that wasn't passed, but they are still trying to get that passed.
Good lord, is that like a million people being assaulted for being different?
What do you mean by "different"?
Good lord, is that like a million people being assaulted for being different?
SEXUAL assault.
Good lord, is that like a million people being assaulted for being different?
Not so much being different as the commanding officers have absolute power over their troops, leading to all kinds of abuse of power. Plus there's the whole ethos of "play for the team", meaning you keep your mouth shut if someone does something so you don't snitch, etc. It's kinda like a prison-style code of honor. When I was in boot camp they used to send random recruits they didn't like back to the beginning of basic just to "make an example out of them" etc. There's so much shit going on in there that doesn't get reported, I hear stories of cars getting wrecked and blaming them on deer when there was alcohol involved, almost every single recruit in my division lied to the MEPS to get in, etc. Seriously, the military is a cesspool.
As long as the military exists sexual assault will also exist within the institution. It's good that they are trying to fight it but they will never stop it.
Certain things don't qualify under the "Dont be a buddy fucker" clause.
Combat Sexual Assault NOW? wow it took this long to adopt rape as a military strategy
As long as the military exists sexual assault will also exist within the institution. Also I don't think that kind of attitude will help in any way.
I hope this silences those, that supported DADT.
As long as the military exists sexual assault will also exist within the institution. It's good that they are trying to fight it but they will never stop it.
that's like saying that as long as the world exists, there will be rape in the world. it's a sensible statement, but it's not exactly helpful, unless you think that blowing up the Earth is the solution.
As long as the military exists sexual assault will also exist within the institution. It's good that they are trying to fight it but they will never stop it.
You'll never be rid of murder in the military either. Doesn't mean you don't try to stop it.

I recommend that everyone in this thread watch 'The Invisible War'.

We should do everything we can to stop it, or at the very least reduce it as much as possible, instead of going "eh it's never gonna end" whenever someone tries to work on the issue. (And yes, I know you said it's good that they are trying to fight, but then again that's kinda why I didn't get the point of your post in the first place).

The fact that military recruiters are surprised and ask why people aren't lying is honestly really pathetic.
Combat Sexual Assault NOW? wow it took this long to adopt rape as a military strategy
We'll call it Operation: Just the tip.
As long as the military exists sexual assault will also exist within the institution. It's good that they are trying to fight it but they will never stop it.
except sexual assault will exist everywhere no matter what so there's literally no point in saying that
Oh thanks Obama, dragging the military into another round of combat...

I'm fine. But it all depends on what job you have also I would guess. For my basic going back to the beginning was being recycled. It was an official term used for recruits who messed up too much so they were sent back either 1 week or back to the 1st week.
You'll never be rid of murder in the military either. Doesn't mean you don't try to stop it.
The irony of this post oh god...
Good lord, is that like a million people being assaulted for being different?
That is 86 percent of assaults that go unreported, not 86 percent of people in the military are sexually abused.
Where's the fun in that post It's not like modern military culture is good or positive in any way
Which military are you talking about, because the US military is very family centric and all about looking out for each other (well so they say but still). Which last time I checked is pretty good and positive.
no fun allowed
Yeah haha people who complain about falsified-DUIs just hate fun
