Long-secret diplomatic documents revealed US President Richard Nixon wanted Uruguay's government to threaten to kill leftist prisoners to try to save the life of a kidnapped American agent 40 years ago this week.
The highly classified State Department papers suggest the US government knew about and encouraged the use of paramilitary death squads to crack down on leftist insurgencies in 1970.
That was even before military dictatorships ousted democracies across much of South America in the years that followed, according to the National Security Archive, which published the documents.
The cables focus on the kidnapping of Dan Mitrione, a former Indiana police officer and FBI agent who was advising Latin American governments, including Uruguay's, on techniques for interrogating subversives.
Basically military and civilian armed groups that carried out politically-motivated killings. All of this stuff was just part of the Cold War expansion struggles, just like in Africa as well. (SWAPO, for example)
But the worst was in Latin America were right wing para-military death financed by the CIA and responsible for ousting left wing democracy's and killing left wingers.
Paramilitary Death Squads? Like Boy Scouts with guns? :downs:
They just found this out now?
Modern Technology does wonders.
Obviously they knew about it, they were financing most of them.

indirectly
I'm guessing this is coming from from a release of the archives, due to The Freedom of Information Act?
indirectly
Not as indirectly as you'd think, and not like that matters when they still financed them.

What's with all this "death squad" nonsense? They were quite simply upstanding citizens who took extraordinary steps to defend the ideological integrity of their local communities. :911:
