[release] • Woman pulled under floodwaters saves her child
• Police divers are searching for her body
• "Mystery hero" who took boy, "too distraught to speak"

BRAVE Roma mum Jane Sheahan made the ultimate sacrifice. As swirling floodwaters threatened to pull her and her seven-year-old son Darcy under, the mother of two and Blue Care nurse managed to hand him to safety before being sucked under the raging torrent that has engulfed much of central Queensland in recent days.
"Save my boy" were the last words she said before she was swept away.
Frantic onlookers tried to warn Mrs Sheahan not to drive through the rising water - at the intersection of Miscamble St and Northern Rd - at 12.45pm on Friday.
At the time of the tragedy she had been helping neighbours transport sandbags to other residents.
"Onlookers waved at her frantically to try and get her to stop," one witness told The Sunday Mail yesterday. But it was too late. Her car was swept off the roadway, the ute flipped by the water's force.
As the pair managed to get out of the vehicle, onlookers raced to assist.
An un-named man from Wallumbilla is being hailed as a hero after he jumped into the torrent to help.
Mrs Sheahan urged him to save her child. After he managed to get Darcy to safety, he turned back to help Mrs Sheahan. It was too late.
Police said yesterday that the "mystery hero" was "too distraught" to speak.
Police divers were called in yesterday to search for the mother-of-two.
Her devastated husband Kerry and other family members joined them.
"She is a lovely woman," said Maranoa Mayor Robert Loughnan. "She is a great community worker."
He said in all the floods that had swept through Roma, the community had never lost one of their own.
Mrs Sheahan's husband has lived in Roma all his life and runs a contract harvesting business.
Mr Sheahan was out searching for his wife with his brother, Lawrie, and fellow harvesters early yesterday. Mr Sheahan was too upset to speak.
Mrs Sheahan, whose maiden name was Simon, is originally from Toowoomba. Her family had gathered at her mother Glad's house on the Darling Downs to await news of their loved daughter and sister.
"The lady was helping others out. That's what people do out here," said Federal MP for Maranoa Bruce Scott. "She was actually in the process of carrying additional sandbags into the area where the floods were rising."[/release]
Well, there goes my smile.
Imagine growing up knowing your mother sacrificed herself for you.
Depressing.

It would definitely give itself an appreciation for its own life.
Instead of being stupid and irresponsible like most teens turn out to be.
A friendly rating just isn't enough for this.
Inevitable funnies on a sad story.
Damn, it's sad to see people like her who are willing to sacrifice themselves to not only help their community, but their children.
I wonder why she chose to drove out into the water even when people tried to warn her. Still, must be one hell of a burden to know this once you get old enough to comprehend the magnitude of it.
I'm not sure whether she deserves praise for saving her son or not. It sounds like she was the one who put him in immediate danger to begin with by driving out when she was warned not to with him still in the car with her.

Because people never make mistakes or anything, right? She still deserves praise for saving them.

People are stupid when it comes to flood waters. During hurricane Irene people where just driving around the road closed barricades. A cop stopped one of them and asked why she did it. The woman said "My GPS told me to turn here.". The best solution we came up with was once a car gets stranded in the flood waters get the person out and leave the car as a warning to others.
Oh holy... "ultimate sacrifice" is right. Seems very noble to give your own life to save a child's, though.
I hope floods as bad as these don't happen around my parts.

Reminds me of that scene from Ice Age where the mother gives the baby to Manny and Sid then disappears.

It's not like she drove through by accident. From the sounds of it there were plenty of people telling her to not go through. It's good that she saved her child and sad that she died but really the mystery man who jumped in to try and save them both should be the one receiving all the praise, not the mother.

That child will probably feel awesome knowing that he had a mother that gave her life for him.

I think it's good to see such people around. Watchuon?

I think he meant the sad part is to see good people like this die.
At least it wasn't in vain, however.

Perfect avatar for the occasion.
Sounds like it was her fault but in recognition of that wasn't willing to make her kids pay the price for it. Good person, shame she didn't make it.

Or it'll take it as a depressing realization that his mother died because of him.
