Ubisoft: We are sitting on finished Wii U games waiting for larger install base

Ubisoft, once a stalwart supporter of Nintendo's Wii U, is holding off on releasing an unannounced new title for the console until there are more of them in people's homes, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot told Polygon this week.
Watch Dogs, Guillemot said, is still coming to the Wii U this November, but Ubisoft is being much more careful with new projects.
"We did adapt the number of products to the level of quantities that the machine did," he said. "So we will have Just Dance again which is well suited for the machine. We'll have Watch Dogs. We have another couple of products that we are waiting to launch, specifically we have one game that we wait for the machine to be more mass market to launch."
Guillemot declined to say how many Wii U would have to sell to make releasing the games worthwhile.
"We don't have a number," he said. "We need the sales to increase so it becomes more and more mass market then we will have the volume that will justify massive marketing and TV marketing."
Does he think that day will ever come, I asked.
"I hope so," he said. "We have a game that has been done for six months. It's on the shelf, waiting for more families to have the console."
The decision to freeze completed games, especially coming from Ubisoft, is a stark reminder of the position Nintendo finds itself in this year. It was Ubisoft that has been for years Nintendo's third-party champion. They supported the release of the Wii and its motion controls with Red Steel. When MotionPlus was released, Red Steel 2 came out to support that technology. And the release of Wii U came at the same time as one of the console's better third-party titles: Ubisoft's ZombiU.
But ZombiU didn't sell as well as Ubisoft had hoped, in part because of the low console sales numbers. That franchise now appears to be dead in the water, even for other platforms.
"I think it was so adapted to the Wii U so (bringing it to another platform) would be difficult to do," he said. "Maybe it will come to other platforms, but not as a full game. It was really developed for that type of machine."
Despite how low sales of the Wii U have seemingly impacted Ubisoft, Guillemot remains at least slightly upbeat about the possibility that the Wii U could turn around.
"Nintendo is really coming up with fantastic games," he said. "They could, with the right price and very good games, help the machine start selling."

This seems a little odd if the game(s) are truly finished.
It sort of makes sense I guess, but it's sort of a self fulfilling prophecy.
Well with Mario Kart out and Smash Bros drawing near, it's probably time to start releasing those completed titles.
But not quite now because of E3.
"we have a bunch of games ready to ship, but we don't think there's enough people to successfully market them."
Shouldn't you be doing that homework BEFORE you spend millions developing the game?

They probably anticipated a larger market share, considering that the wii basically printed money.

Also, what the fuck is happening. I'm defending fucking Ubisoft.
They're waiting for a big paycheque from Nintendo more like.

Because marketing is the most expensive part, not making the game

The money they spend on development is a pittance compared to the advertising budgets nowadays.
Wasn't ZombiU, like, awful?
Wasn't ZombiU, like, awful?
it was meh.
Wasn't ZombiU, like, awful?
It was alright, but it was obvious they rushed it. The multiplayer had some potential though, one person used the tablet to control hordes of zombies while the other play ran around a map collecting weapons/gear while trying to complete some objectives.
Kinda funny that if they want a larger user base, they should actually release those games. If no one releases any game for the Wii U, obviously no one will buy the console and you won't ever get the user base.

But yeah the Wii U has been a disaster. It's almost unheard of here in Australia. The only place I ever hear about it is here on Facepunch.
It's picking up a whole lot of sales though so we'll be hearing it more.
Please don't let the Wii U fail because of stupid bullshit like this. It's a genuinely good console, with innovative ideas that aren't dumb as fuck gimmicks (kinect, PS move).
Oh no, what will Nintendo do without games from the team that brought us Red Steel
Wait Watch Dogs? That explains why it looks like ass everywhere else. They spent all their time developing it for the Wii U!

Red Steel 2 was great.
I am completely content with Ubisoft not selling more copies of their game.
The WiiU will survive without Ubisoft's support just as it has survived without EA. Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros will carry the burden.

that's a lot to put on just two games
they're going to need a lot more than that
But the tablet actually works, and has some cool features (off-screen play for example) while the Kinect was a joke from the start.
Just because it works doesn't mean it's worth having.. I mean unicycles work right so why don't we all ride those??
I mean that it's a bit more than a gimmick and is actually worth having with the system, it's more vital to the system than the Kinect is with the Xbone.
[editline]10th June 2014[/editline]
And I wouldn't say the Kinect works. Mine has trouble detecting people and somehow constantly thinks "Xbox record that" means "Xbox go home", how does that even happen?
with innovative ideas that aren't dumb as fuck gimmicks (kinect, PS move).
Innovate? As in something the PS3 did in 2006? (even though it never took off on PS3 but still)
Why are they making games for the xbone?
It has sold fewer systems than the wiiu
Ubisoft just fucking die already.
They're probably holding out for the big Nintendo exclusives - Mario, Zelda etc.
Ubisoft just fucking die already.
lol everything they're doing makes sense
Wii U had a fucking horrible launch, the people defending it are the ones who bought it for the 500th mario/zelda variation
nobody i know has one or has even considered getting one
i haven't even seen a single advertisement for it in the UK

uh because the wii u has been out a year more than the xbone?
i love the circlejerking on facepunch
ubisoft are a business, of course they aren't going to waste time and resources making the game for the Wii U when they're going to sell millions of units through pc, ps4, and xbone
the people who are like "well maybe they'd have sold more Wii Us if Ubisoft made more games for it" - why the fuck is it Ubisoft's responsibility to ensure sales of the console? Nintendo should have been making deals with them from the start

Lets make a console that costs alot of money, just to sell 2 titles!!!!
that doesn't fucking work man even if they did sell alot..

Ubisoft was okay wasting time and resources by pissing the exclusivity deal with Rayman Legends for the WiiU away, and decided to delay it for half a year just to release it on the other consoles while the WiiU version was finished already by then.
They decided to piss away the golden opportunity to get Rayman back in the spotlight, as there weren't any big titles coming out at its projected original release date.
It would have been a good boost to the WiiU as well. The hype for the title was genuinely there.
Then at the last moment. Ubisoft decided that it would be better for them to delay a finished game to a period where every other big title of the year came out.
Along with them, Grand Theft Auto V, Pokemon X and Y, Super Mario 3D, Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and Annual Shooter Season 2013 and The Last Of Us.
Have you played Rayman Legends. Of course not, because Ubi did release Assassin's Creed IV and was hyping Watch Dogs by then. Ubisoft has not spoken about Rayman Legends afterwards, while speaking a lot about Assassin's Creed IV and Watch Dogs' successes. Rayman Legends probably bombed due to going up against every other big title of the year, and Ubisoft neglecting it completely in advertisements in lieu for other titles. Nintendo 3DS and WiiU owners were playing their longed first-party titles at the moment. Other consoles were gushing over GTA V. Rayman Legends got released in a window where there was almost zero interest for it, instead of the calm months in the beginning of 2013, where not many notable games got a release.
I admit that Nintendo did mess up with their WiiU advertising, but Ubisoft is in no position to complain about that and holding back titles.
This is partially their own fault. They just dropped the WiiU like a brick last year, and are shifting the blame to Nintendo only.

Also the Xbone Kinect worked too, the problem is that no one wants to frail around in front of a TV like an idiot to play video games.
have you even used the wii u gamepad
