Seriously.
the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted trademark status to Apple’s retail store design, offering the company some measure of protection against copycat competitors

The mark consists of the design and layout of a retail store. The store features a clear glass storefront surrounded by a paneled facade consisting of large, rectangular horizontal panels over the top of the glass front, and two narrower panels stacked on either side of the storefront. Within the store, rectangular recessed lighting units traverse the length of the store’s ceiling. There are cantilevered shelves below recessed display spaces along the side walls, and rectangular tables arranged in a line in the middle of the store parallel to the walls and extending from the storefront to the back of the store. There is multi-tiered shelving along the side walls, and a oblong table with stools located at the back of the store, set below video screens flush mounted on the back wall. The walls, floors, lighting, and other fixtures appear in dotted lines and are not claimed as individual features of the mark; however, the placement of the various items are considered to be part of the overall mark.
Source: http://www.ifoapplestore.com/2013/01/26/apple-store-design-finally-gains-trademark-status/#more / http://pdf.ifoman.com.s3.amazonaws.com/store_trademark_docs_jan2013.pdf What's next? Trademarking the colour white?
That's our tree, motherfucker. Keep your Californian fingers off it. How many people actually try to copy the Apple Store design besides chinese outlets selling Apple knock-offs? It's minimalist but horribly sterile. Makes you feel like "you're only here for one thing bitch. Buy it and leave."
Oh for fucks sake.
Okay, apple.
oh come on
Chill out people and read what it actually patents.
This just in: Apple patents more rectangles, this time in building foundation form. WHAT WILL BE NEXT
Breaking: Everyone assumes the title is what the article is actually about.
It patents the display of their stores and how they shelve things/have it organized. It has nothing to do with the type of tables. This is reasonable seeing as their environment has a marketing technique to it that they'd prefer to keep to themselves.

It's still asinine.
Going to highlight this because none of you morons are going to read it anyways.
the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted trademark status to Apple’s >>>>>>LOOK HERE, HERE. HERE.>>>>>>>>>>>retail store design,<<<<<<<<<YEAH, HERE. READ THIS. DON'T JUST READ THE TITLE, READ THIS TOO<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< offering the company some measure of protection against copycat competitors

Breaking: Everyone assumes the title is what the article is actually about.
And another reason why we should be able to post the full article in the OP, everyone is going to assume just based on the title of the thread

It felt much more lively than an apple store.
Went to one of those once. It felt much more lively than an apple store.
For one, the walls aren't coated in that cold-feeling metallic shit. Apple stores just don't feel very inviting IMO.
if you're gonna use a complete lie as a title knowing its a complete lie do this section a favour and dont even bother posting the article
To be honest guys, at this point I think even Apple is like, "seriously??" They just want to see how far they can go now with this obviously broken system until it's blatantly so ridiculous something changes. So I thank you Apple for saving the patent system. And I know the title but the article - that is still a lot of bullshit.
Christ guys, read the linked pdf. It specfically states the position and design of the tables and bookshelves. Which is a pretty poor trademark. It's generic as fuck furniture. Facepunch can't decide whether it hates Apple or hates Apple threads imo.

Patenting your store layout still sounds stupid
Well...Microsoft Retail stores can look similar.
This store has a similar layout, but it looks so warm and inviting.
been to a microsoft store once. everyone there is way nicer than the apple store (they actually feel like human beings rather than marketing tools), not to mention they have good way to show off just about everything in the store without taking up alot of space or pulling a "empty vast minimalism land" shit like apple stores do. for example, the xbox section uses the giant wall tv's for demo screens instead of normal tvs. it's pretty neat.
as someone who works at an architecture firm that works with commercial stuff (IE restaurants and retail), this is actually offensive how they've worded the damn thing. It's semi-vague, to the point they can say it's still technical enough to describe a particular style, but not enough that they could likely nitpick competitors just to shave a couple dollars off their noses
This store has a similar layout, but it looks so warm and inviting.
Which is why I said it was minimalist but horribly sterile. It reminds me of Intel's clean rooms.
And another reason why we should be able to post the full article in the OP, everyone is going to assume just based on the title of the thread
People did that before anyway.
for example, the xbox section uses the giant wall tv's for demo screens instead of normal tvs. it's pretty neat.
I guess the advertising space pays itself
It's kind of stupid, but it isnt that big of a deal. Just a store design. I dont see what use will it be though.
