Israel's prime minister lashed out at Iran Wednesday after a hard-line militia leader said the country's destruction was "non-negotiable."In a televised statement Wednesday, Benjamin Netanyahu added that that ongoing nuclear talks with Tehran risked endangering Israel. "Yesterday an Iranian general brazenly declared and I quote: 'Israel's destruction is non-negotiable.' But evidently giving Iran's murderous regime a clear path to the bomb is negotiable," he said. "This is unconscionable." Iran's News Analysis Kasebeamin earlier quoted Commander Mohammad Reza Naghdi, the head of the Basij paramilitary forces, as saying: "The destruction of Israel is non-negotiable and the freedom of Palestine is one of our highest priorities."
NBC News Great, more Middle-Eastern tensions!
Those letters the GOP sent to Iran sure are helping us. To more war.
The rest of the article makes Israel just blowing smoke out their ass:
Naghdi does not hold a position in the government. The Basij is a powerful volunteer militia under the Revolutionary Guards and loyal to Iran's most powerful man, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. It is called on to suppress internal dissent and to fight when the country is at war. Khamenei has supported the nuclear deal being negotiated in Switzerland, while also warning that the United States cannot be trusted. The Islamic Republic of Iran is a longtime supporter of the Palestinians, and does not recognize the State of Israel.
So, an Iranian general who has a history of blowing smoke out of his ass and making bold claims, made another bold claim... He is the commander of the Basij, a paramilitary volunteer militia, which deals with internal affairs. They are morality police. The general is just stirring up rhetoric, which is what people do to countries their country doesn't like. Israel does the same crap and no one bats an eye...
The shit has officially hit the fan.
Here: You can't possibly be that illiterate.
Naghdi was the counter intelligence chief of the Iranian police until he was appointed to commander of the Basij by by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei himself. The Basij, while being a volunteer militia, are set up as subordinate to, receiving their orders from, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and the current Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. So again, an official part of the Iranian regime. Also:
Benefits for members of the Basij reportedly include exemption from the 21 months of military service required for Iranian men, reserved spots in universities, and a small stipend.Members of Basij are more likely than non-members to obtain government positions, especially security related positions within government controlled institutions. Many Iranians reportedly join Basij only to take advantage of the benefits membership and to get admission to university or as a tool to get promotion in government jobs.
am i the only one who finds it weird that, in the field of international politics, crazy statements made by individuals in government are suddenly considered the absolute position of that country with a disregard for internal political divisions like, imagine if someone took statements made by dick cheney and tried to say that everyone in the US believed that, and that the policy cheney wanted was definitely the policy the US was pursuing iran has internal political divisions, too, it's not like there aren't members of the iranian government and public that are at least aloof if not conciliatory about israel.
Well you shouldn't be really that surprised. The leaders are representing their countries so what every they say will be what we think the country wants. Same goes for diplomats.
