Guilt-racked Victoria Cross winner Johnson Beharry has spoken of how he tried to kill himself by driving into a lamppost at 100mph. He said he hoped the car smash would "be my end" after being tormented by depression and nightmares from his time in Iraq.
Lance Corporal Beharry, 30 - who was awarded Britain's highest military honour for twice saving colleagues while under fire - told The Sun: "Sometimes you just can't get away from the things you have seen."
Describing his crash, he said he stormed out of his house after an early-morning bust-up with his partner.
The soldier, of 1st Battalion, Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment, drove off in his Lexus sports car and said he reached 100mph as he raced down a street in south-east London.
"I picked a lamppost which seemed to be next to a slightly raised section of pavement and drove straight for it," he told The Sun. "I heard a huge crash as the right hand side of my car collided with the lamppost. I closed my eyes and hoped that would be my end."
His car crumpled in the December 2008 collision and although L/Cpl Beharry was knocked unconscious, he escaped with minor scrapes and bumps.
The Grenadan-born NCO, who said he was speaking out in a bid to help other soldiers with similar feelings, has since promised his girlfriend and family he will never attempt suicide again.
"Yes, I'm the most decorated soldier in the British Army but I'm a human being as well - and I'm suffering," he said. "Help and care needs to be ongoing and available to everyone who served on the battlefield."
That's fucked up, it really is.
How about, after serving in a war you can get help for free for a year.
Of all the things he could've driven into, he picks a lamp post?

Maybe you should advise him on how he can do it better next time.

Driving 100 mph into a lamp post to kill yourself is like trying to hang yourself with a long strand of silly putty
Well what exactly did he see that drove him to suicide?

it was probably more a cry for help.. if he wanted to make sure he was going to die without a doubt he probably would have used a more effective method.

Isn't it free on the NHS?
How about, after serving in a war you can get help for free for a year.
For a year? One tiny little year? In the grand scheme of things these are life changing events these men are going for, they will not be 'ok' after a year.

ahahahahaha
Poor guy :frown:
The fact that they say he had an argument with 'his partner' makes me think he's gay. They need to rephrase that, because no one ever uses that to mean girlfriend.
I really hope he doesn't try anything like that again, and that he get the help he needs.

It's going to take longer then a year.
Hell military benefits should cover stuff like this.

Oh yeah, the whole war hero thing is bad to.
Are people that mentally tormented by seeing people get shot? I mean, I'm no soldier, but beyond the immense feeling of fear that would occur during an actual combat situation, I can't imagine being so affected by it that I would want to kill myself.
But again, I'm talking out my ass.
why did he pick a lamp post? But that is really sad

seeing fellow soldiers, kids, women, etc. being shot/killed/burned/beheaded are all enough to drive anyone crazy.

Why are so many Vietnam War Vets homeless?
Because they couldn't maintain a normal life after going through what they did.
Wasn't this the same guy who said he wanted to punch Gordon Brown?
