I couldn't find any pictures on the school website, but this has been going on for two days now and I'll try to have one tomorrow.
My school is having a full-on petition that they're trying to have people sign during the time that we eat our lunch. I honestly don't know why they would care at all, since the word "retard", referring to the term "mental retardation" isn't a derogatory word at all. It's a word of science. I can see why they may want to stop people from using the word in the sense of "Dude, you're so retarded!", but if the person [i]is[/i] acting like one then I don't see how that could be any more offensive than saying "Dude, you're so mentally handicapped!", although that would be a little awkward to say.
To try and increase their persuasion they even had a mentally retarded girl talk through the speakers to people eating lunch, which is a bit ironic seeing as my school has many of the "special" students help in the cafeteria with washing the dishes or collecting the trays...
I think the whole ordeal is kind of ridiculous. Would [u]you[/u] sign the petition?

While I'd like agree with the school's effort, I'd like to point a few things out.
Dumb means unable to speak.
Lame means impaired or weak - handicapped.
Those words are used commonly, are they any more appropriate to use than 'retarded'?

Can I just ask OP, is the school faculty organising this petition or some pupils? If the faculty, count yourself lucky your school even offers petitions. If however its organised by pupils, hammer the fuck out of the "No" key.
