A hunter's arrow that had pierced both sides of a young deer's head has been successfully removed, according to state officials and the woman who first notified authorities about the animal.
Staff from New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife tranquilized the deer Saturday afternoon in the backyard of Susan Darrah's Rockaway Township home, removed the arrow, treated the wound and released it back in the wild, Darrah said today. DEP Spokesman Larry Hajna confirmed the arrow removal.
"Everybody loves a happy ending," Darrah said.
After first spotting the deer with the arrow on Nov. 1, Darrah called Fish and Wildlife and authorities there instructed her to put out corn to draw the deer back into the yard. On different occasions, staff members staked out the area in an attempt to catch the animal and remove the arrow, she said.
Saturday evening, when the small deer wandered into her yard to eat, a member of Fish and Wildlife was able to tranquilize the animal, then follow it into the woods and bring it back into Darrah's yard, she said.
They removed the arrow, put topical antibiotics on the wound, gave it a shot of antibiotics and then waited for it to wake up. The biologists who did the procedure say the arrow did not damage major arteries or organs and the deer's prognosis for survival is excellent.
Once the deer was able to stand, it walked off into a nearby pasture and took a nap before it headed back into the woods, Darrah said.
"I can not say enough, give enough accolades to the guys at Fish and Wildlife," Darrah said. "These guys were dedicated, determined and totally respective of me and my property... They were just terrific."
Wow, that deer just doesn't seem to give a fuck, does he? :v:
does he?
no
this is why you need to make sure where your game goes if you fail to kill it, it causes unnecessary suffering.

or just not use a fucking bow
I hope the wound doesn't get infected, but the antibiotic cover should take care of the same. In any case, I wish the deer a prosperous remainder of life.

Don't underestimate a bow.

Most likely, hunter had a potentially fatal shot lined up, but it didn't hit where he wanted to, maybe deer moved or hunter wasn't a good shot. As the deer was hit, it obviously ran away, removing chances of hitting it a second time.

"Like my piercing, bro?"
This is why you never shoot for the head when hunting, with any weapon

Whatcha looking at? Do I look like I have ab arrow stuck in my head?

I'm guessing he aimed for the spine/neck area, but the deer moved its head while the arrow was at mid flight.
The hunter was probably quite far away from the deer.

I've always been taught to aim for the center of mass, in particular the front of the deers torso.

Would that kill a deer quickly with a bow as opposed to using a gun?

In Australia the mandatory hunting courses for firearms licences require headshots

Well you can't kill australian animals another way

Here in Germany, if game is injured and alive, a hunting party is sent out into the woods to track it down and finish it off. Because if animals injured in hunting are found and they trace the incident back to the hunter (and you can't just go into the forest with a gun, you need to be licensed and report to the owner of the forest) the guy is in deep shit. Even deeper shit if you hunt illegally.
Where I live, the owners only allow locals from the hunter's club to hunt because they don't trust strangers

AFAIK Bow hunting with a compound they should be aiming for that spot, i'd assume its an inexperienced hunter, or someone completely irresponsible. Or somone flaked a shot.
Is it me or is this 'invincible deer' week? I mean, with that deer who jumped in to a moving bus and all :v:
Who the fuck goes for a headshot with a bow?
Someone needs to get their hunting license and certificate revoked.

Some states in the US only permit bows for hunting, and only during certain months. Firearms of any description are right out.
Illinois in particular. God I hate this state. No wonder the Wisconsinites laugh at us so much.

For one there's a bigger chance to get a fatal shot in the torso(hell, it's a fucking organ pinata)
When you shoot for the head you shoot for something the third of the size, that moves around both faster and more irregular, is mostly bone, and only takes it down if you hit the brain, if you even hit it at all.
Basically skyrim enemies in real life.

You should take the trip to go to Montana or Wyoming. Awesome deer hunting there.
Sounds like a lucky shot, at least for the deer.

Aiming for the spine/neck area is worse. Shooting a deer in the spine is the most painful place you can hit it. You always aim for center of mass.

Or Wisconsin. Fucking Wisconsinites have the fucking best of goddamn everything. Spoiled bastards.
Illinois would be a helluva lot better if we didn't have fucking Chicago.

Yeah; an arrow to the snout is far less deadly than an arrow to the skull, what with the common location of the brain and all.

Sorta like how NY would be much better if suddenly a bubble was put around NYC, and all of Bloomberg's assets frozen from going outside of it?
