For Geoff Keys, British round-the-world adventurer, it no doubt looked like a handy short cut. Keen to avoid a long trip back to camp during a journey by river through the Australian outback, he decided would march through the jungle instead.
Two days later, his wrong turn has earned him worldwide attention after he became hopelessly lost in one of the world's most hostile terrains.

He wrote "HELP 2807" in the sand so aircraft could see, and it worked. Pretty awesome.
Can you Brits pls stop getting lost here
You know, not to be that guy or anything, but why should people who get lost not be responsible for footing the bill in situations like this? He gets lost, and whoever pays 375,000 to find him.
Just seems unfair really. There should be travellers insurance or something like that (although it probably would be a niche thing)
Frankly I'm surprised he didn't get eaten by a croc swimming in a river in far north Queensland

Why punish someone for making a mistake, you're ruining him with debt the rest of his life.

Ever hear of taxes? Shit happens. Taxes pay police and firefighers and shit. It's used for the same thing.
Dumb idea.

Boy I hope you never get lost in your life.
I am happy that he was able to be rescued and is doing okay. Of all the places I would choose to get lost, Australian Outback is not one of them.

What you suggested is an absolutely abysmal idea and sets a horrible precedent.
Glad that he was found and all that but
he decided would march through the jungle instead.
Is one of the dumbest fucking things you could possibly do when in outback Australia (or anywhere outback really). Barefoot as well, ridiculously stupid.

Not even that, I don't think Fosters is available in Australia to purchase; it's made directly for export.

It works off taxes in most western country's and in my honest opinion, that the way it should be.
Not having that, would just scare off tourist.
However in some non western country's you do have to pay. Some even ask for your insurance number before getting you off the mountain or whatever.
Most people here in the Netherlands have a travel insurance to deal with these sorts of things. They are not expensive at all.
For example: Mine pays for 1 million € worth of search and rescue expenses and also for any cost associated with getting me(or my body) back home if im hurt or dead. They also pay for flights back when im on vacation and a family member dies, or I get sick or something.

Ahhh, you dutch and your insurance companies...
Plucky British spirit.
Can you Brits pls stop getting lost here
No because according to your soaps if we get lost Alf 'fucking' Stewart himself will come to rescue us in an orange jump suit every time.

See, that makes sense. Someone comes to your country, decides to do something risky, and gets lost so now the government has to foot the bill. Why shouldn't it be your responsibility to ensure that you get home safely?

Because sometimes shit happens? It's not as if he went "Gee golly, I sure enjoy wasting taxpayer's money in the country I'm visiting! Let's go and get lost in the outback so that I can get rescued by the government at their expense!"
