Divers working at a Russian lake have recovered a half-tonne chunk of the space rock that exploded over Chelyabinsk earlier this year. The rock broke up into at least three large pieces as it was lifted from the ground with the help of levers and ropes. Then the scale itself broke, the moment it hit the 570kg (1,255lb) mark.
Source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-24550941
Man that must have been quite a watercolumn
The rock broke up into at least three large pieces as it was lifted from the ground with the help of levers and ropes.
Oh no! It hatched! Everybody run!!
To be honest I excpected it to be larger. Cool anyways.
God, can you imagine how much that would sell for
Man that must have been quite a watercolumn
The lake was frozen so there would have been big ice shards flying everywhere too I'm picturing some russian dude fishing out there and just not giving a shit
I wonder what it's made of.
Pepper;42547235']I wonder what it's made of.
I was wondering that too. Seems awfully heavy for how small of a rock it is.
But wait couldnt it have radiation or some sort of toxic/dangerous stuff? I imagine the divers had some kind of geiger counter or something alike
But wait? couldnt it have radiation or some sort of toxic/dangerous stuff?
Pepper;42547235']I wonder what it's made of.
Space.
I was wondering that too. Seems awfully heavy for how small of a rock it is.
Probably composed of iron.
Probably composed of iron.
Yeah, I don't see it being made of anything other than that really. It had to have been dense material to make it down to Earth to begin with. According to wolfram, if you took 570kg of iron and made it into a perfectly cubic shape, it would be about 0.400m per side, and it looks to be about that big.
Y'know this is how the Blob started.
Make a sword out of it.
Make a sword out of it.
This guy did make a sword from some meteorite bits he had
the real question is does it apply the starlight debuff?

Coincidentally, I just started watching Meteorite Men from the beginning, such a simple concept, such a chronically enjoyable show. I get excited when they find even a small chunk. Definitely a 'job' I could enjoy doing...
This guy did make a sword from some meteorite bits he had
That's weird how it resembles the damascus steel of old
That's weird how it resembles the damascus steel of old
Probably because it's made in a (possibly) similar (pattern welding, vs the old technique that we really don't know for sure) manner.
Probably because it's made in a (possibly) similar (pattern welding, vs the old technique that we really don't know for sure) manner.
The way he made is is how you make modern damascus steel, he even said damascus steel in the video
Make a sword out of it.
I remember reading a book about treasurehunters trying to recover the lost treasure of a sword, supposedly made out of metal sent down to the earth by angels and used it to slay a demon, cursing the blade. Some pirate got his hands on it, and it caused him and his crew so much shit that he finally made a massive tomb for it to seal the cursed thing away. Throughout the book, all kinds of weird shit happens to the treasurehunters. Electronics go haywire, people get scurvy and their teeth start falling out. It's so bizarre that they all start believing in the curse. When they finally find the sword, it turns out that it was made of some kind of extremely radioactive shit, explaining the curse and the sickness (the scurvy was actually just radiation poisoning). Really awesome book.
Damn, shame I missed the lifting, I live in Chebarkul, pretty much near the lake :v:
