I love his videos, they are damn informative on anything
[editline]26th October 2012[/editline]
One thing I have about this video is his thing on Sim City(2013) It's a one time online activation, afterwards it will never bother you besides Origin if you don't use the disc.

Doesn't the game require origin afterwards if you want to launch it? (I don't know how origin and EA games exactly work)
Very nice watch.
He is one of the few reviewers on YouTube that is actually informative and tell you stuff that you should pretty much really know before purchasing one.
Also he hasn't fell into the hellhole of YouTube infame
Steam is genuinely the best Copy Protection out there.
I've used it since 05 and have had literally 0 issues. Other than silly slightly inconvenient unfixables.
This is well-timed, I just reinstalled GTA IV earlier today
Started it up, had to sign into Social Club. Turned out I used an old email address so I went to the site to change it, but no, you can't change your email address ever. Ok, so I signed in with my old email and started up the game. It told me that I wouldn't be able to save the game unless I logged into GFWL. Okay let me figure out what my GFWL account details are. Logged in to that, and then it tells me there's an update, and I'll be kicked straight back out if I don't install it right now. I install it and it tells me I have to restart the game. So I do that, sign back into Social Club, sign back into GFWL, and start my game! Painless experience, really, and totally not something that Steam could have done without every having to bother me
Oh well, at least Rockstar does use Steamworks for their new games. Social Club is still there but it's not too bad

Some do, but it can still be played by the .exe in the origin folder like steam.

GFWL is legit a complete joke. BS2 and GTA4 are great games but (even though it's not hard to get around) GFWL really doesn't help anything.
steam if you only have one steam required game isn't nearly as bad as GFWL. if you actually use it though... it's amazing :v:
My entire accumulation of media over the years is stored on 2.5' external drives, fits all in the equivalent of maybe three DVD cases with backups - because it's almost fully digital. The only thing holding me back is PC games. Most won't rip at all even with the most extravagant DRM removers and it leaves me feeling materially backward. Didn't know it was so prolific.
Love LGR.

I've had performance and bloating issues with it since always.
I love LGR when he covers informative and old stuff, stuff like this video. I'm not so much for his 'LGR Plays' and so on.
I'll be damned if he doesn't sound like a Black Mesa scientist.

It's good in the sense that it's not obtrusive, but it's pretty bad protection.
Love this guy, not many people on Youtube making good vintage computer videos, but even outside that he is one of the best.

I've had occasional "game not currently available" issues, but steam is definitely the top for me too.

I feel your pain
I jumped back to windows 7 after w8 was just not working, GWFL assured me that it saves to their cloud all the time, when I went to log in again, updated gwfl, logged into my windows live account etc. I found all my old saves despite me having the files locally and all didn't fucking save now I have to start all over again which is so bullshit

do you not remember the days when steam would take ages to update???

Dongles want me to kill fucking babies.
saying steam is the best drm out there is a joke
it's not just drm, it's an entire platform itself, and you're tied to an account
in the realm of drm talk, looking outside of steam unbiased, it's terrible because it's still always online drm
what you're basically saying is that if a game came out that required you to download a client and be a part of a digital distribution service, that that's the best solution
and it isn't, it really isn't - origin is an example of this
because you want to use steam and like using steam doesn't mean the system itself is good, it's still trash, you just like steam (hey i do to, but it doesnt change the fact the idea sucks ass)
i don't want to sign up for a new service every time a publisher decides to side with another digital distribution service
god forbid it's not steam or origin, because i'll have to sign up for another one
that doesn't justify drm

when you compare steam to things like origin and GFWL which are very linear in simularities but less than in quality, steam is the best there is. It literally shits on GFWL in every single way and origin gets tons of complaints. Plus the recent software updates + greenlight + all the new community features.
VAC is the best online DRM because no one gets banned for being good (some games like mw2 though, vac is shit, but that's to blame purely on shit devs).
You'd have to be an idiot to call it shit, even if it isn't flawless or is bad as DRM its still the best as digital distribution / community service for PC.
[editline]26th October 2012[/editline]
I wouldn't even really call it pure DRM because you can still get valve games easily through non steam means. However, no one can connect online without a legal copy.
[editline]26th October 2012[/editline]
and looking at your 114 games and huge tf2 inventory I'd say steams pretty damn useful to you.
The thing about steam offline mode is untrue. If you save your credentials you can always turn steam on without having to go online. I used steam offline mode for once when my internet turned off and never needed to log in.
The only reason I like steam is cause I used it for a long time to the point that it became a
hobby for me. But IMO, steam is fucking awful. Half the time, for me at least, offline mode doesn't even work forcing me to play the game online when I have no Internet connection. I never enjoyed how slow steams servers are compared to origin. Origin went through a day of thousands downloading games and never slowed down. However when TF2 updates the servers crash to a halt forcing the user to switch to another server when they shouldn't need to be doing that.
IMO Steam shouldn't need To do what it does. Always online DRM is a bitch especially on steam.

It sometimes still needs you to login after X amounts of days.
It sometimes still needs you to login after X amounts of days.
Well my internet was out for 3 months so it must be longer than that if its true. Though I say thats probably not true and instead caused by a few problems that can cause steam to not work since I hear there are a few things that cause offline mode to not work.

Its not always online. By definition it is not because I don't always have to be online.
You need to have your credentials saved as auto login if you want to use offline mode on startup if I remember right.
