I'm confused as to why they're doing this. Are they building it right on Ground Zero? Don't they need to wear radiation suits or something?

The original was a safety concern, since it was no longer structurally secure and would collapse, causing an ecological nightmare.
Radiation protection wall, 27m high
So radiation can't jump higher than 27m? Good to know!

The idea is for this one to slide over the entire building when it's done, so that nobody needs to go very near it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Safe_Confinement The whole Chernobyl thing is pretty fascinating, in a morbid way. There have been some interesting documentaries made about it in the past decade. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TQ32XV0B54 for a BBC Horizon coverage, and a Discovery Zero Hour piece https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNvmShXD0vw
I think they're just gonna place this over the original one, when it will collapse, the radiation won't be able to leak out.
The NSC will have remote-controlled cranes inside it, which they will use to deconstruct any unstable parts of the old structure https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernobyl_New_Safe_Confinement#Deconstruction_of_existing_structures (terrible article but whatever)
Yeah, good thing it didn't happen on the edge of the pacific ocean or something. Phew, that would've been a disaster.

Am I the only one that finds it spooky that it looks like there's life in Chernobyl now? It's almost like the accident never happened. Maybe one day, Pripyat will be clean enough for people to come back. Maybe Pripyat will be reborn again?

Then they also poured concrete over the working ground to better shield workers from any radiation in the soil
Perhaps with this in place the government will lift the ban on settling in Chernobyl now. You could replace half the city with new buildings for residents and have the other have (along with the plant) used for tourism.

There's literally nothing to do there since the NPP blew out. That city was made for the NPP
Yeah, good thing it didn't happen on the edge of the pacific ocean or something. Phew, that would've been a disaster.
thats like comparing a fire cracker to a Fat Man nuke. [editline]5th February 2014[/editline] One accident sent extremely high doses of radiation across Europe, and has caused tons of radiation related illnesses since the 90's; and the other has caused a marginal increase of radiation levels in salt water life within a few km of the plant.
Not many people know this, but here's a fun fact: Chernobyl Unit #4 was the one that suffered the catastrophic explosion in April of 1986. Chernobyl Units #4 and #3 share the same building. Chernobyl Unit #3 was shut down in December. of 2000. Imagine working that job.
I read about this ages ago and only recently found out it was being built after loads of delays and hesitation with the project. Chernobyl fascinates me and it's great to see this up and going again.
Chernobyl is a Interesting Environment but i doubt i'd visit it at the risk of my own health.
