Lake Karachay Use to be a normal lake; full of fish, ducks, and plant life, located in the Urals of western Russia. Since the late 40's/early 50's, it became a dumping site for the nearby Mayak nuclear facility. Although all dumping has stopped since then, it will never be fully radiation-free. If you were to stand on it's shores, you would receive a lethal dose of radiation within 5 minutes or less. Standing on the shore for one hour would not only completely irradiate you, but would kill you in the same amount of time.
It has dried up considerably, and the now-free irradiated dust has blown across the region, causing a sterility rate of 50%. Cancer is inevitable for almost all who have lived in the vicinity.
An aerial photo of the now concrete-covered lake:

And yes, that's a road going over it. I have no idea why anyone would be so stupid as to put one there.
A bit of the concrete shield collapsed, never repaired:

Here's the scary part. The solid waste has eroded. Much of it has combined with the heavy salt at the lake bed, and is eating its way through the soil towards the arctic circle. If it ever reaches it, up to half of all marine life in the northern hemisphere could die.
Now, I'm far from being an environmentalist, but this is one of the few things that are environmentally-related that we really need to look into.
GIVE ME INFORMATIVES
Lets go for a swim next to that school of mutated flying herring!
I'm not too worried about it.
Why would anyone be so stupid as to do this.

People once thought that if you were to just dump whatever you wanted wherever you wanted, the earth would just say "o hai, lemme maek dis go away 4ever." Of course, that's not quite how it works.

Give it a couple hundred generations.
Let's take a drive through the death blotch!
It's like the entrance to vault 87.
Anyways how far has the radiation spread in the countryside there?
What country is this in?

Except that was a lethal dose of radiation in a couple seconds, and had super mutants.

Urals of western Russia
I thought mods at least read the OP before replying :v:
What country is this in?
Russia
Do you notice if your in a heavily irradiated area?
Russia, always so polluted.:science:
What country is this in?
It quite clearly says Russia.
It quite clearly says Russia.
I rated you late.
Seems like a nice vacation spot.
And it's in Russia
Go figure

Yeah, if we all died out, the Earth would devour what remained of our civilization over thousands of years and you wouldn't even be able to tell there used to be intelligent life living here.

Unless we nuked everything so hard that no organic life was left. :v:
I looked it up on google maps and there's a lone car driving on the road that goes through the lake. That's one hell of a shortcut.

As long as you kept your windows shut and your AC off, you'd probably be fine.
Trust russia ay?

I think your skin is supposed to feel like it's being pricked by needles and you can taste metal in your mouth.
I can't remember where I heard/read this.

Gamma radiation wouldn't have a problem penetrating through the car.

I read a article about a failing scanner (can't remember exactly what kind) which sometimes would, due to a programming error, cause burn-like wounds on the patients.
Well, that's probably the last road I'd ever want to drive on.
This doesn't make sense. How would they build a road across it if
you were to stand on it's shores, you would receive a lethal dose of radiation within 5 minutes or less. Standing on the shore for one hour would not only completely irradiate you, but would kill you in the same amount of time.
I don't see why they would have donned haz-mat suits to build a road there.
