Pebble CEO Eric Migicovsky tells me the company wanted to broaden the spectrum of people who would consider buying one of its smartwatches: whereas the original has a sporty feel, he says, the new Steel harkens back to classic aesthetics with its more restrained, steel-based design. Its new look is suitable for more austere occasions, while the hardier shell and new Gorilla Glass screen also suggest greater durability.
The Pebble Steel is the product of all the lessons learned from manufacturing the original and all the feedback the company obtained from its users — which now number over 300,000 around the world. People complained that the Pebble was too tall, so the new variant has a much shorter lug-to-lug distance. Others wanted a smart wearable that they could have on their wrist at a dinner party as well on the ski piste, which brought about the more sophisticated new look. And finally, the Pebble company introducing today’s watch is much more experienced, informed, and connected than the one struggling to ship out its first product a year ago — Migicovsky and his small group had never been to China at that point, never spoken to mass manufacturers, or considered the interplay between industrial design and production efficiency. The company’s CEO says the Steel’s design is much more modular, meaning that if any parts aren’t produced to spec, the entire watch doesn’t have to be scrapped.
Looks hideous compared to a regular watch.

I prefer traditional watches, but this doesn't look bad at all really
considering this is what the $149 pebble looks like
i'll take the $249 one

I actually like the look of this watch. It seems its more of a casual watch.
Is it just me or does "ten four teen" seem more difficult to mentally process than "10:14" or a traditional clock face?
I'm going to get so many boxes, but was I the only one who mistakenly read the title as "Peggle" instead of "Pebble" and thought "Is EA seriously charging $250 for a new Peggle game" at first glance?

Why would that surprise you?
I'd like to have a watch like this, but i can't justify having a watch anymore. Even when I did, I would still end up just checking my phone to see what time it was.

You can change it

No what are you talking about everything has to be aesthetic and minimal in a functionally deficient way.

You can change the watch face, jesus christ
I still think smartwatches are pretty pointless.

I... I can finally have my watch with Unix time.
Don't buy a Pebble btw. I recently wore one to a party and whenever a woman saw it they thought it was a Galaxy Gear and started tearing their clothes off and begging me to fuck them. When they found out it was just a lame-ass Pebble they laughed and called me a fat nerd

That's a bit nicer but the bottom line is that I haven't worn a watch for about 5 years. I used to be obsessed with watches (I even had a collection of 100+) but clocks are everywhere now, and if not, everyone's got a phone in their pocket.

Well it works as a extension of your phone.
I'll take a good "classic" watch over a smartwatch any day. Something about the look of these smartwatches makes me think of a 35 year old tourist with a fanny pack.

So I could pull my hand out of my pocket and look at my $250 smartwatch which interfaces with my $250 smartphone, or I could pull my hand out of my pocket and just look at my $250 smartphone?
Wow sign me up.
I just hope they made this one more scratch resistant. My pebble got scuffed/scratched like no tomorrow

"corning gorilla glass"

I've had my pebble two months now and haven't gotten a single scratch. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I use it constantly and it bumps in to quite a few metal objects.
i just got a pebble and i have had no real problems with it, i love it but damn that thing looks better
wearable electronics are stupid and pretentious.
wearable electronics are stupid and pretentious.
You realise that the vast majority of wristwatches are 'wearable electronics', right?
Unless you think everybody's a fucking hipster unless they have a goddamn clockwork wristwatch.
Smartwatches have a long way to go, i don't think this year is really going to be the year of smartwatches.
Shit most likely starts to roll when the almighty Apple prophet foresees the iWatch.

This happens to me when I go to a party all the time! Except I get overly drunk take my clothes off and than they laugh at my penis...
So do all the american patriots with a watch like this cry whenever it says nine eleven?
It looks really ugly, and this might just be me personally, but I'd kill for a 60mm to 85mm diameter pocket watch and smartphone combo.
I'd imagine a nice silver, aluminum, or gold pocket watch that when opened would have the old fashioned "you can see the gears" pocket watch on the right, and on the left you would have a smartphone with a keyboard that is either touchscreen or slides out.
Another feature could be having the ability to easily switch out the decorative plates on the front, and back, therefore opening up a new market of decorative designs for jewelery designers and such. Hell even small time artist like those on Etsy would probably make a good sum of money by producing custom decorative plates.

Something like this could probably become common-place.

This, exactly. Could someone please explain the appeal of smartwatches?
Everyone wears hoodies now, so watchmakers should start making pocketwatches for hoodies. Hoodiemakers should make hoodies with inside pockets. I'd love to see a chav with a pocketwatch. If he has a bowler hat even better.
