People Can Fly back to being independent. Working on new game. Now own Bulletstorm IP.
Today, just a moment ago, we announced that the People Can Fly team returns to its original name, memorable logo and roots as an independent studio. We – as the People Can Fly team – are excited about the new possibilities ahead of us as we work on a new game as well as continue to partner with Epic and Chair.
So what happened? It was a long process that started just after we launched our last game – Gears of War: Judgment. Since then we have been engaged in multiple game and engine related projects. We’ve worked on Fortnite, UT and Infinity Blade III, sample games and GDC Kite Demo, and many, many more. And we had a good time! Working with talented people at Epic and Chair, working on brand new UE4 and seeing how this amazing technology has been developing and reaching its maturity, creating tons of stuff for games and engine is awesome but we felt we needed and wanted more.
The desire to create our own game, to dive into the game development process that starts in your head, through concepts and design ideas, realized in prototypes and finally in the game, to inspire each other every minute, to create and iterate, was stronger than all the benefits of being a part of Epic group. We are lucky that Tim Sweeney as well as Epic’s board and its executive team members are fair and honest people and allowed us to reach for our dreams. Moreover, in parallel to working on our new game, we continue to partner with Epic and use UE4 so we couldn’t be happier! For those who may have forgotten about us – we were the team behind Painkiller, Gears of War and Bulletstorm. Our DNA is AAA shooters and we’ve just started a journey to bring you our new game. So please stay tuned!
Studio formerly known as Epic Games Poland returns to independence, with new Unreal Engine-powered projects already underway
June 24, 2015 – Epic Games and People Can Fly today have announced the Warsaw-based team’s return to its original name, memorable logo and roots as an independent game studio.
Ownership of the company, which had been rebranded as Epic Games Poland in 2013, has returned to the local leadership to reflect the team’s desire to create their own games, a move Epic supports.
Studio director Sebastian Wojciechowski continues to lead People Can Fly. The studio is actively contributing to Unreal Engine 4 and Epic’s upcoming game, Fortnite, and is also using the engine for an entirely new unannounced game.
Epic Games Founder and CEO Tim Sweeney said, “We’ve been honored to work with this brilliant group of programmers, artists and designers throughout their history: first as a partner using the Unreal Engine, then as a studio within Epic, and now once again as an independent company.”
“We, as a People Can Fly team, are extremely excited about new possibilities ahead of us,” said Wojciechowski. “We’re going to work on a new game, while continuing to partner with Epic and use UE4. We’re grateful to Tim and the whole Epic team for our long and successful collaboration.”
People Can Fly made its mark on the game industry with the hit Painkiller series more than a decade ago. The team began working with Epic in the early Gears of War days, and went on to ship Bulletstorm and Gears of War: Judgment. People Can Fly has also contributed to Epic’s more recent games, including Infinity Blade III, Fortnite, Unreal Tournament and other unannounced projects.
And their site notes they own the Bulletstorm IP. Previously it was Epic's. Hopefully they'll remove GFWL. And of course maybe work on a sequel.
That title fucks with my head man
Shame this country is really shitty for game devs and companies in general
Man I would love a new Bulletstorm.
Bulletstorm 2 would be great, especially after the cliffhanger ending from the first game.
Painkiller HD remake would be fucking rad. The game's graphics haven't aged that well imo.

There already was one :v:

I would not complain about a Bulletstorm sequel in the least. The last one really shows its age now. It was a great experience when I first played it.
Whoa, they own the Bulletstorm IP now? I'm kinda surprised Epic let that one go so easily. That said they still seem to have a good relationship with Epic.
Either way, I can't wait to see what they've got in the pipeline.

Wonder if it has anything to do with Epic leaving the game developing scene. They probably realized that the IP would be better in PCF's hands.

I'm not surprised. Bulletstorm was a financial bomb that failed to turn a profit.

It's similar to them giving/selling Gears to MS. They have no use for it, they have other priorities now, so why keep it when others would like to work on it? Also, as noted above, it didn't sell well.
TBH Bulletstorm was mediocre
The gameplay just didn't have anything interesting to it apart from the whip gimmick

Look at how wrong this person is.

but I thought the gunplay was kinda satisfying.
Bulletstorm was fun, I'm sure it could be a lot better if it was expanded upon with a sequel

Bulletstorm was legit the best FPS of this year, though.
Most of the first person shooters released in 2011 were boring modern shooters with brown and gray environment, and Bulletstorm stood out because it was the complete opposite of that.

that's not all it takes to make a good game though
sure it's nice to have a change, but apart from that bulletstorm was just incredibly mediocre

It had fast gameplay, satisfying as fuck gunplay, really good visuals for such a small game, a really fun scoring system, original weapons and the game didn't overstay its welcome.
The scoring aspect wasn't as strong as it could have been for lack of an actual rating system but the rest of the game felt absolutely solid and incredibly fun.
As far as 2011 games go, BRINK was mediocre, Homefront was mediocre, Crysis 2 was mediocre - Bulletstorm was pretty fucking great.
How the fuck did they get away with owning the Bulletstorm IP? That is fucking unheard of, even if the IP isn't all that desirable.

Looks like they have a really great relationship with Epic still.

Not nearly as monochrome as other games from 2011, besides the scenery was varied enough

Sure, Bulletstorm was colorful, but besides that it was just another super-linear modern shooter.
It was fun for what it was, but it was a very generic shooter that really liked the bazillion points Call of Duty gave players.

You do realize that you had to be creative in terms of killing the enemies in that game. That was like half the fun of the game.
I don't recall any other game that came out since 2011 that let you slide around and freeze people in mid-air while kicking them onto shit to cause reactions, and I certainly don't recall any other game that let you fire grenades chained together which wrap around people.
The most common thing it had with "modern shooters" is iron sights.
There was a moment in Bulletstorm that made me kinda not like the game.
It's when you first come upon the mutants and see how they've been slaughtering the bandits, and the main character says something like, "They're pieces of shit, but they don't deserve that", even though that is the same thing he's been doing for the entire game.
They should've added coop to the single player campaign. That would've saved it IMO

?
i feel one of the hallmarks of the modern shooter is a hundred guns that all feel the same. bulletstorm didn't have a lot of weapons but every one of them was unique both to the other games of 2011 and to the other guns in the game. being able to fling shit around with the whip was far more than you could ever do in any "modern" shooter i can think of
are you considering it like the call of dutys and the battlefields because your health recharges?

Except that it played nothing like any modern shooter?
