We’ve seen Windows 95 running on smartwatches and handheld game consoles, but now you can run the 20-year-old operating system directly through any web browser. The browser-based version of Windows 95 was created by programmer Andrea Faulds, and was recently discovered by The Next Web. Essentially, Faulds used the popular DOS emulator DOSBox to boot up a copy of Windows 95, then compiled the DOSBox code into Javascript using a program called Emscripten. But can it run Doom?
I'm tempted to try it and see if I can find an ftp source for Doom95 and try running that. :v: FTP because I'm guessing the command prompt might work better than IE (which crashes the VM according to the article).
The Internet Archive uses the same type of DosBox port for their MS-dos library.
But can it run Doom?
theoretically yes, practically no since you wipe every file system each time you run it, so you'd have to install doom each time
windows crashed when I launched internet explorer
windows crashed when I launched internet explorer
I crashed it when I 'dir' the windows folder in msDOS prompt.
Mine just gives a timeout error and freezes during the bootup screen. Might be cause I'm on Android or something else.
Mine says "All downloads complete." but has nothing there.. Do I hate to boot it via DOS commands?
Running IE always gives me a timeout. Oh well.
Mine says "All downloads complete." but has nothing there.. Do I hate to boot it via DOS commands?
Give it time. It toke me about a few minutes for it to actually start. if it doesn't start in like thiry minutes. then something is going on. Aside from that. Can someone try to play doom on it?
Mine says "All downloads complete." but has nothing there.. Do I hate to boot it via DOS commands?
Nah, you just gotta wait a little bit. Oops ninja
It's just slow as shit for me. Literally 1 FPS
I can't believe how well it runs(for me at least). Computers have come a long way.
Its terrible, and literally crashes when you open internet explorer. Not there quite yet :v:
But can it run Doom?
But., But,. Can it run Crysis?
not very impressive and has been done before, was hoping it was proper x86 emulation instead of dosbox in emscripten. [editline]1st February 2016[/editline] still fun though
Worth it just to hear that startup sound again.
I still have a copy of windows 98 but it requires a floppy drive to install and I the one I have doesn't have the right connectors for modern motherboards :v:.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/3027904/windows/windows-95-is-back-right-inside-your-browser.html
Why would you want to run 95 in your browser? its unstable, prone to crashing and doesn't support USB unless you count that one time that bill gates tried to make it compatible.. Which is why we got 98 which fixed those problems.
That... That's actually pretty cool.
Not as good as Windows RG in a browser.
Andrea, you forgot the absolute zenith of the Windows platform. The single most important and functionally stable release. 3.1 motherfuckers :3
Chromebooks suck. Can't even get java. It's a good thing this piece of shit is a school laptop.
This is strictly for educational purposes. Windows 95 is a copyrighted piece of software, and Microsoft (and others) have not had their rights expire yet, in fact they probably never will. While Microsoft no longer sell Windows 95 as a retail product, nor do they still sell licenses or support for it (which ended on December 31, 2001), it is still very much protected by copyright law, and you may be infringing it. I would argue that this might (and that is quite tenuous) be protected under United States fair use and United Kingdom fair dealing provisions, given that this is a non-commercial use for the purposes of research and education, which should have no effect on the potential market value of Windows 95. However, I am not a lawyer, and even if I was one, there's no guarantee Microsoft's (or the other copyright holders') would agree with me here. If I am sent a Cease and Desist letter, I shall take this down as soon as possible
This man is very nervous about being sued
This man is very nervous about being sued
Well it is Microsoft
Well it is Microsoft
what exactly is this supposed to mean again
