The final rule to list four of the existing six distinct population segments of scalloped hammerhead sharks as threatened (Indo-West Pacific DPS and Central/SW Atlantic DPS) or endangered (Eastern Atlantic DPS and Eastern Pacific DPS) was published [pdf] on July 3 by the National Marine Fisheries Service. The move comes in response to a 2011 petition [pdf] from WildEarth Guardians and Friends of Animals. Weeks ago, a similar petition to list great hammerhead sharks was denied. Including the newly described Carolina hammerhead, a cryptic species difficult to distinguish from scalloped hammerheads, there are nine recognized species in the family Sphyrnidae (which includes all hammerhead species and the closely related winghead and bonnethead sharks). Of these, the scalloped is the second largest, and can reach more than 13 feet in length. Like the better-known great hammerhead, scalloped hammerheads are found worldwide in temperate and tropical waters.
More + Maps: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/scalloped-hammerheads-become-first-shark-species-on-the-u-s-endangered-species-list/

Good, now put EVERY OTHER SPECIES OF MANTA RAY AND SHARK on the fucking list because they're all at dangerously low levels.
this:
That ending got too real.
Good, now put EVERY OTHER SPECIES OF MANTA RAY AND SHARK on the fucking list because they're all at dangerously low levels.
There are almost 500 species of shark and most of them are not endangered. Putting them all up would be doing the ones that are critically endangered a disservice. Focus on the ones that need the help.

God damn it. This is why Landsharks aren't going to exist.
Man, hammerheads look scary as fuck with their eyes all sideways and shit.

It's basically a giant radar scope, but nothing like a radar scope really. Kinda like a metal detector but not really that either. It's awesome though. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ampullae_of_lorenzini
Don't help the sharks, they are horrible killing machines who eat humans for fun! Shark Week told me so!
Almost every show during Shark Week at some point says how important sharks are.
Almost every show during Shark Week at some point says how important sharks are.
While having shows about shark attacks, killer sharks, and presenting false, intentionally misleading information about Megalodons as fact, with fake scientists and news stories. It's a slap to the face of the real people who do shark science and try to correct the misleading information on sharks. It would be like Dog Week talking about the millions of dog attacks each year, with videos of dogs foaming at the mouth set to scary music then trying to raise money for dog shelters in a 1 minute plug at the end. It's sensational TV that feeds off and propigates the very fear it should be trying to dismiss. The entire lineup of Shark Week should be scrapped and redone. [editline]9th July 2014[/editline] And this needs to fucking die: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megalodon:_The_Monster_Shark_Lives Everyone involved in this shows creation should lose their jobs and never be allowed near a production crew again.

I spoke to a friend who studies marine biology about this story. She said it wasn't an issue. not sure if i'll ever ask her about her studies ever again. :v:
This makes me want to pursue a major in marine biology.
