De Kirchner's ally Daniel Scioli ended up getting rekt in a surprise turnaround
Centre-right opposition candidate Mauricio Macri has won the presidential election run-off in Argentina, according to exit polls.
Mr Macri went up against Daniel Scioli, the governor of Buenos Aires province, in Sunday's vote.
Neither candidate garnered enough of the vote in the first round to win outright, forcing a run-off.
Mr Scioli was marginally ahead in the first round, with 36.7% to 34.5%, but has lost ground to his rival since.
The son of one of Argentina's richest men, Mr Macri had a long career in business before entering politics.
And this is from last month:
Argentina will take a less aggressive stance over the Falklands if centre-Right presidential hopeful Mauricio Macri is elected on Sunday, his foreign policy chief has told the Telegraph.
Mr Macri, currently coming a close second in the polls to Daniel Scioli – hand-picked successor to President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner – is campaigning on the promise to provide a clean break from 12 years of Kirchner rule.
“We have to restore this relationship that has been frozen in recent years, as a result of this conflict,” said Fulvio Pompeo, Mr Macri’s most senior foreign policy adviser.
“We will maintain forever our claim to the Falklands. But our relations with Britain should be broadened.”
Mr Pompeo, who studied for a postgraduate degree in international relations at the University of Westminster, said that a Macri cabinet was unlikely to include a Falklands minister – a position created in 2013 by Mrs Fernandez. Daniel Filmus has headed up the ministry ever since, and been Mrs Fernandez’s chief tub-thumper.
“We don’t need a Malvinas minister,” he said, using the Spanish word for the archipelago. “We have a minister for foreign relations.”
The status of the Falklands has played practically no role in the Argentine electoral campaign, because politicians of all persuasions know that to question Buenos Aires’ claim to the territory would be electoral suicide.
At last
Someone who dropped the stupid and backwards "LETS INDUSTRIALIZE!!!1!11" speech and has a team with a sense of what's actually happening in the world.
And if the guy doesn't deliver, einfach, we vote him out in 4 years.
At last.....
I don't think the UK necessarily has a problem with Argentina believing that the Falklands are theirs (although I'll always take the opinion of the Falklanders as the most important). It's just that nobody in the world likes it when Argentinian governments use it as an excuse to draw away attention from anything bad happening in their country.
Dulces de Leche for everyone
great news for the whole region, we need a whole lot less crazy up in here, and Cristina Kirchner was a big ally for Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia.
hopefully we're seeing the beginning of a new age in South American politics.
Technically he hasn't won yet. Stadistically he has 10% of the total votes only have been accounted for. Regardless, it's nice to have some fresh air down here.

It's enough, you only need a sample
i know nothing about him but hey as long as it's not cristina i'm ok with it
No, both candidates didn't even mention the islands in their whole campaings. It's just that the OP is a brit and most of their knowledge of our country is either about Football or the islands.

It's not like you guys ever branch out, though. I'm guessing if you asked anyone who wasn't from a neighbouring country about Argentina, that would be their response. Beyond "what's Argentina?", that is.

It depends
Most people from Europe aren't keen on learning what things do Argentina has, when it fact, it has a million things, so it's not that we dont branch out.
The clear evidence is the dumb trip Antony Bourdain did here...
It would be akin to someone saying about the UK: "Oh, rain, tea and Beckham" while it actually has a million more things
Or about germany: "Oh sausages beer and the best football team in the world"
EDIT: IF you asked anyone from LATAM the answer would include music bands, films, tv shows, etc etc Just in the same way there things shared by Europe just because they are in Europe. Or between the CIS countries.
WE /CHANGE/ NOW
It's time to hope this brings benefits to those willing to work and pay taxes for a living, and drive import prices down, even by a little bit. Hey, maybe this'll even kill the awful local electronics assembly industry so those resources can go into other, more fruitful parts of national industry. If anything, I hope the advances in LGBT rights made during the last eight years are expanded upon. Only thing I can really say was good and pure.
I worked in this election, too! Very orderly stuff. Mostly expected (given how Scioli's entire campaign pitch was I'm Not Macri, Guys) but a little close for my taste. Latest figures at 80% tables are 51,45% to 48,55%, I expected a few more points of difference. It's going to rile people up for sure.
Fucking finally man, after 12 years of Corruption and Inflation...

yeah the whole malvinas thing is blown way out of proportion internationally. it's definitely a tool for swaying votes but it's not nearly as common a topic as some people believe
So they kicked out that corrupt bitch, good deal.
The problem is the brainwashed idiots that want Cristina to come back, they were already fucking shit up on the street when Macri won, and the worst thing is it's almost half the population. They seriously seem like religious zealots. We are fucked.
Trying to lower our defenses and steal our island while our back's turned, eh
I'm on to you argentina
congrats argies on your victoly.
