Teenager with Tourette’s beaten unconscious for inadvertently making Nazi salute on a train
A German teenager who can’t help making Nazi salutes because he suffers from Tourette’s syndrome was beaten unconscious by a black man who thought he was insulting him.
Gerrit Oeller, 16, was with two friends who tried to explain to the enraged man that the salute was not meant as an insult, and that he could not control his arm.
But when the Tourette’s led the teenager to grin insanely at the man as well, he went mad, hitting Gerrit so hard that he ended up unconscious.
The attack happened on an underground line in the Dulsberg district of Hamburg in northern Germany.
Gerrit said: 'He asked me if I thought it was funny and it made me nervous, which made me clench my teeth and he thought I was grinning at him. That was when he hit me. I went out like a light.'
His friends told him that another passenger had raised the alarm with station staff who had asked what was going on, but the pair had been too scared to say anything with the furious man there, only when he went off did they call the emergency services and police.
By the time police arrived the man had gone but they are studying CCTV footage in the hope of tracking him down.
Gerrit, from nearby Brunsbek, was taken to hospital where he was treated for a cut over his eye and a swollen jaw.
The boy's mother Nicola Oeller said: 'We don't really want to see him caught to have him punished, but we would like him to know that our son really is sick and it is a genuine condition, and maybe to apologise.
'He can't help himself. But there should be more awareness of the condition.'
In Germany some 5 million people suffer from a form of tic such as Gerrit has, but most are so mild that they are barely noticeable. Gerrit's arm straightening and the clenching of his teeth is of the more extreme variety.
Yes. I have tourettes and it happens from time to time. Shit sucks.
I've always wondered, with Tourettes do you feel it coming on, and regret it as you're doing it, but can't stop?
you're supposed to post the actual article as far as I know, not just the source
Yes. I have tourettes and it happens from time to time. Shit sucks.
What does your physical action consist of?
Must feel terrible not to be able to control yourself and say/do inappropriate stuff
Would tourettes exist if there were no inappropriate words/gestures?
Would tourettes exist if there were no inappropriate words/gestures?
Uh. Yes? Of course.
Would tourettes exist if there were no inappropriate words/gestures?
"poop butt face"
Uh. Yes? Of course.
What would you be shouting then? Random words?
What would you be shouting then? Random words?
I remember watching some documentary about it where a kid kept screaming "Chicken"
I've always wondered, with Tourettes do you feel it coming on, and regret it as you're doing it, but can't stop?
As far as I know they can feel them coming, and some people are able to prevent them, but it just makes it built up and they end up doing more later.
What would you be shouting then? Random words?
Its a common mistake to think tourettes only involves swearing, it can involve any kind of words or phrases, I think it sometimes has something to do with the subconcious. For example, I remember seeing a thing where a girl would sometimes say embarassing things in public without meaning it, like when she was in a shop and saw a black person, she shouted 'NIGGER'
I saw a video of this one girl with tourette's who always gave the middle finger
Instantly came to mind

Seems like a serious overreaction on the guy's part.
What an asshole, you should at least ask "what the fuck are you doing?" before beating someone unconscious.
I got Tourette's syndrome and I confirm this :v:
This once happen to me when I had a speech in school, everything went quiet for 10 seconds but than I continued talking.
But most people in my school knows I got this neurological disorder
-snip-
Some people are so sensitive its insane.
dailymail.

This is the most tactful headline I've ever seen from the mail.
What would you be shouting then? Random words?
I remember seeing a documentary about it ages ago, and one of the guys had to train his dog really really really well because occassionally he would shout at the dog to run across a road when a car was coming on the dogs walks.
Harsh stuff man.
I thought the swearing was a myth of tourettes and it was just the twitches that normally happened?

Depends, the majority of cases are non verbal tics but it can also be swearing, randomly blurting phrases or words or making gestures.
Unfortunately awareness for this kind of thing is hard to spread. You have the very small percentage of people who genuinely suffer from it and you have the much larger percentage of people who either lie or are simply assholes who do disrespectful things on purpose. Because honestly, are you going believe a kid telling you he has Tourettes after he's done insulting you and your mother is true? People are definitely more inclined to believe the kid is an asshole, because blaming it on Tourettes sounds like the perfect alibi anyway. And that's not surprising either, with some of the thing kids do now.
Why is anyone surprised at all by this turn of events?
I wonder if this teen has ever been arrested or fined before. (Unless this was the first time a person thought he was doing the Hitler salute)
Considering it's illegal to do (or rather be caught doing) the nazi salute in Germany.
Even for a joke AFAIK.
But even if he has or ever will be, the police will let it slide, seeing as he really can't help it and isn't actually trying to do the forbidden Hitler salute.

Because according to a German article about this, his friends explained that he has tourette's syndrome to the guy that punched him, but he didn't believe them and punched him anyways.
Shouldn't it be possible to tell apart a guy having his tourrette's syndrome tics and a neonazi (or just an uneducated immature idiot) genuinely trying to piss someone off?
Especially after his pals point out his disorder?
I was born with tourettes but I've been lucky enough to not have tics to that extreme. It's always been sharp inhaling, wrist/fingers, and facial expressions, and (only way I know how to describe it) "back of the throat wincing". When I hit puberty the degree to which it would effect me tapered off and it never really came back. I still get periods where it gets bad, but like I said I've been lucky to never have it be as bad as full arm movement or anything exceedingly vocal like most people associate with tourette syndrome.
I have tourettes and I can confirm this. Luckily I do not have a very severe case of tourettes.
Yes. I have tourettes and it happens from time to time. Shit sucks.
I have tic syndrome, which is like a mild form of tourettes. It still affects me from time to time (especially when I think about it, like now) but I've learned how to hide it and deal with it. It's gotten much better over the years and I hope the same can go with you.
I have a friend who actually twitches his arm every now and again, his left eye too. Although its not tourettes related, he just got hit in the head with a table leg during a fight a few years back and it did damage to his brain. He's pretty self concious about it and gets really embarrassed when someone points it out.
