He revealed the date as draft legislation on holding the vote was brought before the Scottish Parliament. Voters will be asked the yes/no question, "Should Scotland be an independent country?"
The question should be "Should Scotland be part of the United Kingdom?" rather than what it currently is.
I just hope my fellow Scots have some common sense about them and vote "No". Alas it will be around the 700th anniversary of The Battle for Bannockburn and no doubt patriotism will be high.
The question should be "Should Scotland be part of the United Kingdom?" rather than what it currently is.
Why? The electoral commission wrote this question to be neutral. The Scottish government originally wanted "Do you agree that Scotland should be an independent country?"
His he still trying to put the election on some famous event in Scottish history?
Why? The electoral commission wrote this question to be neutral. The Scottish government originally wanted "Do you agree that Scotland should be an independent country?"
Because currently what they will do is leave one union and then join another. They won't be independent so they shouldn't ask people if they want that, rather they should ask if they want to be part of the UK.
salmond salmon with almonds
I hope it fails.
Is this a decision for the Scottish people alone, or could the UK as a system tell them: "Hah, no, you're staying with us."?
Is this a decision for the Scottish people alone, or could the UK as a system tell them: "Hah, no, you're staying with us."?
What do you mean? Only Scottish people can vote
What do you mean? Only Scottish people can vote
Yes but, lets take Spain. The Catalonian people could vote for independence, yet Spain as a government isn't allowing Catalonia to become independent. Could the UK do the same to Scotland?
Yes but, lets take Spain. The Catalonian people could vote for independence, yet Spain as a government isn't allowing Catalonia to become independent. Could the UK do the same to Scotland?
In theory yes but we are allowing them to have this vote in the first place
Scotland would be so fucked economically if it became independent, it has few raw materials and a dwindling supply of natural gas.

I'm assuming the 'other' union you're referring to is either the EU or the Commonwealth. In both cases you're wrong, unless you'd *really* like to argue that neither France or Australia are independent countries.

Could the UK do the same to Scotland?
No; the UK and Scottish governments agreed to hold the referendum after negotiations
So... I'll see you all in this thread in a year and a half or so?
Why are you guys so hostile to Scottish independence? The Scott's can have their own country if they want, if anything, having their own country will lead to more effiency and better government for Scotland.

I very much doubt any pro-independence votes will have considered the economic implications - it'll mostly be misguided nationalism and an attempt to spite the BASTARD ENGLISH.
Facepunch has a strong hatred of nationalists Also I'd love to see some proof that Scotland would be incapable of standing alone
Economically I think Scotland would be better off. They wouldn't be attache to the UK who act as a superpower. They can instead act as a small European nation, using their tax revenue [especially oil] for the citizens instead of Imperialistic indeavers such as colonies and nukes. The Scots being more left wing in general would make this happen. That or Scotland would go "Greece"... either way, their choice.
Scotland would be so fucked economically if it became independent, it has few raw materials and a dwindling supply of natural gas.
in fairness you don't really need natural resources to succeed economically nowadays, in fact it often becomes a burden. look at japan - it spent the first half of the 20th century expanding to conquer new resources which led to its ruin, and spent the second half staying put on the home islands that have little resources and its economy reached unprecedented heights
As an aside, the surname Salmond, it's not quite Almond and it's not quite Salmon, it's a horrible amalgamation of the two, and since my surname is one of those two, it just annoys me.

We have been in it for 306 years and only good has come out of it. Remember that joining it basically allowed Scotland to become an economic powerhouse in the 19th century (well, Glasgow at least).
So, if this passes, what would the UK be officially called then? The United Kingdom of Great Britain (Except Scotland) and Northern Ireland? That's a little wordy
So, if this passes, what would the UK be officially called then? The United Kingdom of Great Britain (Except Scotland) and Northern Ireland? need a bigass unbiased infographic.
