Whether it's on a console, a PC, a smartphone or tablet, hundreds of millions of people play video games every day. Yet most mainstream media covers the industry the same way it treats adult dodge ball leagues and cat fashion shows (both noble ventures, but neither of them multi-billion dollar industries). And the only time you hear legislators discuss video games is when some politician decries them as the death knell for all things righteous in the world (hint: they're not). Now, after years of being ignored and relegated to steerage, game-players have voted to send a message to Electronic Arts and the gaming business as a whole: Stop treating your loyal customers like crap. After more than 250,000 votes, Consumerist readers ultimately decided that the type of greed exhibited by EA, which is supposed to be making the world a more fun place, is worse than Bank of America's avarice, which some would argue is the entire point of operating a bank. To those who might sneer at something as "non-essential" as a video game company winning the Worst Company In America vote: It's that exact kind of attitude that allows people to ignore the complaints as companies like EA to nickel and dime consumers to death. For years, while movies and music became more affordable and publishers piled on bonus content — or multiple modes of delivery — as added value to entice customers to buy, video games have continued to be priced like premium goods. There have even been numerous accusations that EA and its ilk deliberately hold back game content with the sole intent of charging a fee for it at a later date. It's one thing to support a game with new content that is worth the price. It's another to put out an inferior — and occasionally broken — product with the mindset of "ah, we'll fix it later and make some money for doing so." New, independent game companies do pop up all the time, but the cost of entering the market has historically been too expensive, making these indie innovators prime targets for acquisition by mega-publishers like EA. Our hope is that the growth of app-based gaming and downloadable games will continue to make it easier for developers to get their products out without the backing of companies that don't care a lick about the people who fork over their cash. Oh well, Worst Company In America 2012 is officially in the books. All that's left to do is send off the Golden Poo to EA.
http://consumerist.com/2012/04/congratulations-ea-you-are-the-worst-company-in-america-for-2012.html
and people still eat their shit like it's the best, seriously, complaining about a company being shit and making shit games and going on to buy all the shit they make isn't the right way to make a point.
Bank of America should have won, there's no doubt about that. But EA just happens to be in the spotlight at the moment. They fucked up pretty hard with Mass Effect.
They'll still buy from EA regardless. Gamers have no balls.
EA buys up developers, that isn't fair to say.
Apple is far worse than EA yet got almost nowhere close as many votes as EA.
all votes by raging ME3 fans lol
and now we wait for the EA damage control
Deserved it.
They'll still buy from EA regardless. Gamers have no balls.
It's kind of hard when they are almost a monopoly.
Even though EA is bad, I would of voted for my internet Provider "Qwest" , internet providers are the worst/ Note: I was looking at the chart, some companies like AT&T and Comcast did make it to the semi finals. check out all the competitors http://consumerist.com/wcia_bracket_2012_round5.png
Apple is far worse than EA yet got almost nowhere close as many votes as EA.
No they aren't, Apple might sue people and sell overpriced hardware but that is pretty much it, the "new phone every year" argument doesn't work because have you seen how much shit other companies like samsung shit out each year? EA has closed multiple studio's making great games, I say they are worse then Apple by far.
Worst Company In America? That sounds a bit hyperbolic. . .There's no way they're worse than Bob's Rapewagon Emporium & Ether Candy Supply Outlet in Biloxi, Mississippi.
deserved it for origin
and people still eat their shit like it's the best, seriously, complaining about a company being shit and making shit games and going on to buy all the shit they make isn't the right way to make a point.
Where's the picture of that one Boycott MW2 Steam Group where all the members were playing MW2? Exactly same shit folks, exact same shit. People in the industry are still going to get reamed by EA, and they will fucking love it.
No they aren't, Apple might sue people and sell overpriced hardware but that is pretty much it, the "new phone every year" argument doesn't work because have you seen how much shit other companies like samsung shit out each year? EA has closed multiple studio's making great games, I say they are worse then Apple by far.
No I'd say an anti competition company is far worse than a few games being cancelled, not to mention that fact that many of the companies on the list were worse than both apple and EA combined. EA is at most, the worst games publisher, but they're certainly not the worst company in the world.
deserved it for origin
There are reasons to dislike EA. Origin is not one of them. The way they handle developers is. The fact they still use archaic technologies like PunkBuster and SeureROM is. Their pushing of the online pass system is. Fuck, there are many, many better reason to dislike EA than Origin (which isn't that bad you babies). That still doesn't make them the "worst" (according to a bunch of Facebook users lmao) company in the US. The worst companies would be the ones that have actually cause massive amounts of damage to their customers and products in general, or, I dunno, one of the causes of the current economic problems? This entire "contest" was fucking dumb in the first place and shouldn't have existed.
Bank of America should have won, there's no doubt about that. But EA just happens to be in the spotlight at the moment. They fucked up pretty hard with Mass Effect.
Naw man it's not just mass effect, everyone has hated their guts for a long time. Also I think the fact that people outside of America can vote on this is probably another good reason they won, since Americans aren't the only people they're pissing off.
Where's the picture of that one Boycott MW2 Steam Group where all the members were playing MW2? Exactly same shit folks, exact same shit. People in the industry are still going to get reamed by EA, and they will fucking love it.
You also have to remember that a lot of the people that buy these games don't actually give a shit about the developer or publisher. They just see a game they like the look of or heard about and buy it to play it. It's only communities like FP and the likes that actually care about the people behind the game and realise any problems buying every game a company releases will cause. Not everybody is a "educated gamer" who wants to care. Most of the players just want a game.
I honestly believe ME3 would have been better if Bioware wasn't under EA. It's also teue about indie developers. Remember when EA was trying to "suggest" that Minecraft could use a publisher, and Notch told told them to shove off?
Out of all the choices on there, it was EA. Certainly lets you know what the priorities of this generation are.
It's also teue about indie developers. Remember when EA was trying to "suggest" that Minecraft could use a publisher, and Notch told told them to shove off?
With very good reason... I would hate to see more companies end up like Westwood or Bullfrog. [editline]4th April 2012[/editline]
Out of all the choices on there, it was EA. well i feel the comany deserve's it for what kind of garbage they would give us.
and now we wait for the EA damage control
clickity clack, down the track comes damage control http://kotaku.com/5899092/worst-company-in-america-ea-says-halliburton-must-be-relieved-it-wasnt-nominated
I don't give a shit. Their games are quite good.
Bank of America should have won, there's no doubt about that. But EA just happens to be in the spotlight at the moment. They fucked up pretty hard with Mass Effect.
I have Bank of America and I have no problems with them.
Activision deserves an honorary mention.
I don't give a shit. Their games are quite good.
Such a nice consumer you are, and 90% of EA's shit is what they bought and milked, they barely make anything themselves.
deserved it for origin
Why? For wanting to compete with Steam?Only reason I dislike it is because EA decided to make future published games like Mass Effect 3 and Battlefield 3 only on Orign and not on Steam, thus dispeesing my library among services, and I can almoat guarentee there won't be any 75% off sales, let alone at an already lowered price.
Why was Bank of America even on the list? I've had an account there for years, and they even dropped a fee when I accidentally over drafted. Is it because of the whole, "Occupy" thing?
