A penguin is definitely an unlikely candidate for military success, but a king penguin by the name of Sir Nils Olav III has just been promoted to Brigadier in the Royal Norwegian Guard.
The Edinburgh Zoo's resident penguin was awarded the prestigious title during a special ceremony at the zoo with 50 of Norway's guardsmen in attendance.
Sir Olav III marched down the line of soldiers standing at attention before he was presented with an insignia on his wing and saluted by an officer.
Longe leve Kongen (penguin)!
A few little notes, Nils Olav is also a knight... and there were 2 other Nils Olav king penguins that came before him.
the Penguin is mightier then the swordfish
I imagine that penguin waddling down the ranks of guardsmen thinking; "Man, Humans are fucking weird."
I like how the bird is looking at him like "What the fuck, this isn't a fish."
The Edinburgh Zoo says Sir Olav III is regarded very highly among the Norwegian guardsmen and has received these honours due to his "outstanding service and good conduct".
so what does that mean in terms of penguins
I'm confused, why is a Scottish penguin being appointed something by Norway?

Quoting wikipedia,
Norway – whose explorer Roald Amundsen was the first person to reach the South Pole in 1911 – presented the zoo with its first king penguin at its opening in 1913.
When the Norwegian King's Guard visited the Edinburgh Military Tattoo of 1961 for a drill display, a lieutenant called Nils Egelien became interested in Edinburgh Zoo's penguin colony. When the Guards once again returned to Edinburgh in 1972, he arranged for the unit to adopt a penguin. This penguin was named Nils Olav in honour of Nils Egelien, and King Olav V of Norway.
That penguin has achieved more success in life than I have.

I feel like you've been waiting to use that for years.

Or maybe it was actually thinking "phase 2, initiate"
This must make for great barracks chatter
"Hey Gustav, we're shipping out to the UK for some ceremony"
"The UK, the guys who left the EU over fishing rights?"
"That's nothing, the new brigadier general from Scotland is here and is mad about fish, oh shit there he is!"
"Morning general!"
"SQUAWK"
