So it's the best bits of combat from Chivalry and Mount and Blade? count me in. Glad they are addressing the medieval martial arts turbo nerds while making everyone happy
I am glad medieval FPS/TPS got more popular. Mordhau, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Mount & Blade: Bannerlord? Let's see where this goes.

Looks good but the authentic medieval theme of it is totally uninteresting and generic to me.
Glad they are addressing the medieval martial arts turbo nerds while making everyone happy
Always found it silly, people wanting even more realism in a competitive, real time, player-skill-driven sort of video game. Of course there's a balance to be struck, but it can't be too realistic unless you want the gameplay to suffer; typically it comes down to control scheme limitations, making things too boring (see grappling, effectively take two players out of a fast moving fight to roll around on the ground with QTE's or something??) and balance. I suppose its the equivalent of "milsim" sperglords, except they also want at least Receiver tier gun operation. The setting doesn't really phase me, I'm here for the core gameplay.
This looks amazing. Imagine going in a big group fight with your sword while screaming "DEUS VULT" over the mic.
How will latency/lag effect this style though? I can see that being a huge issue
How will latency/lag effect this style though? I can see that being a huge issue
Imagine lagging then all of the sudden your head is gone popped off
How will latency/lag effect this style though? I can see that being a huge issue
If it works for m&b (whichit does with less than 120 ms) then it will work for this.
Looks like they managed to avoid some of the major issues with chivalry's combat system but it will depend on their balancing and mouse speed limits. If they let screen dragging get out of control all the fancy systems become useless.
How will latency/lag effect this style though? I can see that being a huge issue
The best way to deal with it is likely to join a low ping server that auto-bans/kicks high ping players.
Imagine lagging then all of the sudden your head is gone popped off
Last I heard they're using server authoritative, so there's a chance lagging players hurt only their own experience, but it depends on how they're doing it. Chiv had client trusting for hits, and that was pretty gay.
Hope it will have decent customization options. I want custom drawn banners and clothes, sword modding and other fun stuff.
Goddam the combat looks great. Gonna keep an eye on this.

Here's hoping 3rd person and fov shifts don't improve swing rates.
in the video they said turning rate was limited while swinging eliminating any screen drag issue
how m&b did it.
Already looks better than Chivalry.
chambering oh good lord
I really dig how basic play is slow but on advanced level it gets fast. Will probably be amazing to watch 2 pros duel.
I mean I know Warband has chambering but I swear to god that's one in a million and the response isn't as smooth as this looks. Cute detail with the partial dismemberment tho'
warband was completely fucked because spamming with long 2handed weapons was the way forwards due to the frankly retarded acceleration mechanic, and the only counter-argument that was ever presented for this was "get better at parrying", which only worked on low-ping servers chivalry is people playing at max fov and abusing glitches this looks better than both of those though i hope the archery isn't as anti-fun as it is in every other game [editline]29th March 2016[/editline]
I mean I know Warband has chambering but I swear to god that's one in a million and the response isn't as smooth as this looks.
because the devs came out and said that warband was meant to be played on sub 20 latency on duel servers because otherwise chambering and parrying is nearly impossible and even then, cool you parry a single blow i hope you're using a two handed weapon or you'll do one chode's worth of damage, and if you fuck up that parry/chamber you'll die instantly because you're fighting Dribbler McCuntchops, a man using a two handed axe the length of an ironing board who plays on a mouse sensitivity that gives him motion-sickness whenever he moves, but does ten million damage every swing because he follows up his mouse clicks by throwing his mouse across the desk to get maximum ultra-realistic speed damage - medieval combat was dominated by men with two handed weapons spinning at near-relativistic speeds and if you disagree fuck you, you should have chambered
though i hope the archery isn't as anti-fun as it is in every other game
The question is how do you make archery fun without the "that one guy that stands in spawn trying to snipe fighters aka wasting everybody's time". I mean the usual tactic is some 100 people shooting at the same time creating a impressive hail of arrows, but good luck trying to implement that without using some sort of archer AIs and maybe tank frames. Maybe expanding the arsenal or having archer be more functional than your average soldier? Fire arrows + oil or something, that was always fun in Dark Messiah. Then again, the focus seems to lie primarily in the melee, just have to wait and see s'pose. The ballistae look inviting tho'
arrows need proper angles to penetrate armor or to hit joints else they have a much lower chance to penetrate crossbows are entirely removed from the game fixed
You can run the effective range of a crossbow in less time than it takes to reload one.

Man I wish I was gold.
Make arrows less effective against armour in general over decent distances, so you need to get close to actually be more than a nuisance (against someone with armour). Crossbows; same idea, obv more damage, but the longer reload times make up for it. Sorta hard to balance portable railguns, It'd certainly depend on the gamemode too. Also adds a reason to wear more armour too. There aren't classes like in Chiv, armour is location based (wearing arm armour adds the hit-to-kill benefits to hits on your arms). I foresee people using the heaviest helm + the lightest armour or a gambeson or w/e, which is totes valid imo and makes the most sense for melee (bring hits-to-kill numbers down on weak points -- i.e. your head, and maybe your chest if you put on a chest piece or something -- so that they aren't any better targets than your other bits, like arms and legs, and also maximising movement speed/weight bonuses). Archers can punish lighter setups like this from further away (including other archers). Oh and shields, always good to have more reasons to bring a shield. I don't want shields to end up in the sorry state they are in chiv, being only detrimental in combat unless you know how to, and are willing to, (ab)use shield exploits.
I recall war of the roses having the best archery system out of the genre. Hopefully they ape their system.
