The Avengers is a 1960s British television series conceived in the Spy Fi genre and set in cold war Britain. 'The Avengers' centred around two characters, most notably John Steed partnered with various females, and working as government agents for the 'Ministry'. As the series progressed, the one hour storylines combined elements of science fiction, fantasy with liberal doses of British eccentricity. The Avengers was produced from 1961 to 1969, making it the longest continuously running espionage series.[1] By 1969 The Avengers had achieved major international success and was syndicated in more than 90 countries.
A great classic show. I think season 4 & 5 are the best, so that's what I'm going to refer to for this thread, since there were numerous changes to steed's sidekicks. It's really an acquired taste because it's old and pretty cheesy, but it's a wonderful classic show that deserves a thread. If you love the old James Bond movies, you'll probably like this show. It's got that same witty-cliche vibe about it. Surprisingly, this show started before any of the James Bond movies came out; so no, it's not a ripoff. Main Characters (of 65-68): John Steed Plays the primary agent sort of role. The character is basically a perfect gentleman who's always got some witty response to the situation. And look at that, he's always carries around a fucking umbrella and a bowler hat, doesn't that look classy? But the umbrella's got a sword in it, and he punches people out on occasion, so he's not some sort of fruit :frogc00l: Emma Peel Plays a sort of supporting role to steed, a sort of stereotypically charming British woman. She's basically he perfect image of a bond girl, which is ironic because she plays one of the bond girls a few years later. She's always got these uniquely 1960's outfits, it's great. Here's the opening title, because it's cool. Anyways, just a great classic show that I thought was worth mentioning :3:
Just to warn anyone thinking of getting into it, it is very very odd, but in a good way. Don't bother with the horredous movie though. You can find quite a few of the episodes on youtube.
Frankly, The movie sucked ass. I was very disappointed. I agree, don't go near it.
The theme tune is awesome.
Frankly, The movie sucked ass. I was very disappointed. I agree, don't go near it.
The main problem is that it was made by americans who didn't get the subtle humour or the bizzaire imaginations of the series.
