North Carolina still has a lot of problems, it remains one of the most corrupt states and as of right now state law forbids gay marrage, but this is a step in the right direction. North Carolina: The state who's first requirement for holding public office is that you believe in God. And this is written in the state constitution that was redone in the late 60's. I'm not terribly proud of where I'm from.

It does not help though that NC is home to some of the most gerrymandered districts in the entire US.

Not as bad as South Carolina. North Carolina seems like a pretty good mix of southern and industrial culture. In the Raleigh area (I moved one year ago from South Carolina) I saw my first gay couple, and didn't even understand that it was acceptable to do that here until hours later as I thought about it.

Downtown Asheville is the coolest. There's so much diversity in the people there. I really hope that same-sex marriage isn't too far into the future here.

I have some friends that moved to Asheville, they said a fair amount of people out there likes psychedelics as well.

Harder drugs are becoming a serious issue, especially heroin now that they have started cracking down on prescription painkillers. But there are some good smoke shops and weed, mushrooms, lsd, etc. can be pretty easy to come by.
