Buncombe county NC has begun taking marriage license applications for same sex couples

[quote]Buncombe County Register of Deeds Drew Reisinger accepted marriage license applications from 18 gay couples Tuesday in hopes of convincing N.C. Attorney General Roy Cooper the state’s ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional.
Reisinger also submitted a request to Cooper for his opinion on the constitutionality of the ban in light of the U.S. Supreme Court’s June ruling striking down the federal Defense of Marriage Act.
“Why are we denying same-sex couples in North Carolina the dignity and the legal acknowledgment granted to heterosexual couples here or same-sex couples in other states?” he asked in the letter to Cooper. “This strikes me as a violation of equal protection as these sets of couples are treated very differently under the eyes of the state and federal government without a clear rationale for this difference.”

Asheville is home to a huge population of proponents for LGBTQ rights. North Carolina still has a lot of problems, it remains one of the most corrupt states and as of right now state law forbids gay marrage, but this is a step in the right direction. Makes me proud to know my old home town is pushing for equality.

North Carolina: The state who's first requirement for holding public office is that you believe in God. And this is written in the state constitution that was redone in the late 60's.
I'm not terribly proud of where I'm from.

Our state is pretty messed up as a whole, but western NC seems to be dragging us into the future. It does not help though that NC is home to some of the most gerrymandered districts in the entire US.
Not as bad as South Carolina. North Carolina seems like a pretty good mix of southern and industrial culture. In the Raleigh area (I moved one year ago from South Carolina) I saw my first gay couple, and didn't even understand that it was acceptable to do that here until hours later as I thought about it.
Downtown Asheville is the coolest. There's so much diversity in the people there. I really hope that same-sex marriage isn't too far into the future here.
this is a step in a good direction.
i'm pretty sure i live close to asheville.

There is a fairly prolific drug culture, unfortunately lately it has been leading to a lot of trouble. Harder drugs are becoming a serious issue, especially heroin now that they have started cracking down on prescription painkillers.
But there are some good smoke shops and weed, mushrooms, lsd, etc. can be pretty easy to come by.
