Here's how it's going to shake out. One game will be called H1Z1: Just Survive, which will contain the multiplayer survival portion of the game. The other, consisting of Battle Royale plus some new planned competitive modes, will be called H1Z1: King of the Kill. These games will be completely separate from each other beginning on February 17, and each game will be sold at a price of $19.99.
For those who have already purchased H1Z1 in Early Access, you'll have access to both games after they split without having to buy anything else. Also, if you buy the current version of H1Z1 in Early Access prior to February 17, you'll also receive both titles. And, you'll get to keep any cosmetic items, keys, unopened crates, and event tickets you've acquired or purchased before the game splits in two. After the split, we're told, premium items collected in one game won't be available to your character in the other, even if you own both games.
They've been advertising that the game will go F2P since before its early access release, and it's even still on the Steam Store page that the game will go F2P.

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?
“Initially available as a Steam Early Access title with optional in-game RMT marketplace purchases, H1Z1 will later launch as a Free to Play. Your Way™ title with optional in-game RMT marketplace purchases.
I don't really play the game but this is scummy as hell. The fact it was "Early Access" and would be going F2P was the main justification for the addition of microtransactions so early on. Now after advertising it would go F2P for over a year, they're pulling that back and charging double for any new players.

Good thing I didn't buy into this scam.
There goes my desire to play H1Z1
Well, fuck that noise. This shit happens way too often these days.
thank fucking god people who already own H1Z1 get the second game for free
fuck that shit
I honestly wanted to buy this just to see if I could make some profit off the steam market.
Never-mind.
What a fucking joke. But at least there's always better alternatives.
Anyone who bought into this game anyone is kind of a dumby
it's such an obvious scam that it's not even impressive
And suddenly their potential profit plummeted.
There's ways to be greedy, and there's way to be straight up stupid. They picked the wrong one.
Overkill is that you?
Could someone tell me if this was/is a crowdfunded game? Why would they plan to make it F2P?

No, its being made by SOE (planetside 2 devs) who got renamed.
Their original plan was to make it F2P after early access and have microtransactions. Seems they've decided to keep the microtransactions and split the game into 2 $20 ones.

The users on their subreddit are actively defending this decision because "oh good it wont be as full of f2p noobs and hackers now"
Didn't they also charge for playing a random other gamemode too? Also micro transactions

theres tons of irony in that statement, being that the people who got it free are the f2p noobs now
They are saying it's a good thing because each game now has it's own dev team, a lot of the fans seem to be happy because nearly all of the updates the game has received have been for battle royale...and not survival.

Well I mean, that's a pretty rock steady argument. Having the game cost money introduces an obvious barrier to entry that just isn't there when any Joe Scripter can just create a throwaway email to continue cheating of their previous one gets banned.
Personally I was happy Overwatch is a retail-priced game instead of F2P and I imagine CSGO costing actual money was influenced by similar thinking.

Wow. This is from one of the Devs too.
Can they do that? Technically they've changed the product that you've paid for into a different one.
Green Dawn.
You needed to purchase Event tickets to get in.
you can find the event tickets in the main game as loot though

This quote is hilarious if you take a minute to think about it.
"You can't get a refund. Be thankful that you are receiving the second game for free
by which we mean the second half of the single game that you bought. You're welcome. Also check out this hot new skin for only $2.99".

It was early access, so probably.

riight, because games like dayz/rust/warz that had money barriers weren't plagued with cheaters and "f2p noobs" lol what ever that means. i guess they needed to find a new reason to defend this shitty developers choices.
some things are just too good to be true.
7 Days to Die is better anyway

Scams can be fun too.
I remember when people used to shitpost in the Rust subforum about how H1Z1 was going to 'kill' Rust if garry didn't do X (usually X was "bring zombies back").
Here we see H1Z1 killing itself. Who's laughing now? :v:
Wait, do you pay for skins in this game? The ones I've seen are pathetically bad, like, MS Paint bad
And there went any chance of me even trying the game out.
I've been holding out until the game went F2P before trying it (because of all the issues and negative reception it's had), and now that they're abandoning that idea, I see no reason to.
It's not like zombie survival games are still hot shit anyway. I mean, look at the two top survival games being played on Steam right now. One has no zombies (Rust), while the other has fucking dinosaurs (ARK).
Saw this coming a mile away with how they went about the game
I remember when this game was just becoming a thing, and I was like "It's gonna be a train wreck like every other DayZ-like game." And some of my friends said "No, it's a triple A company this time, it'll be good!"
So yeah, I saw this coming from a mile away.
