You've heard the rumors, and now StarTrek.com can officially confirm it: Star Trek: The Next Generation will be released in high-definition Blu-ray, starting in January with a sampler of several popular episodes, followed by a season-one set to be released later on in 2012, and subsequent seasons beaming down after that. Each of the 178 episodes spanning The Next Generation's seven seasons will be transferred to true high-definition 1080p for release in the Blu-ray format and, eventually, for runs on television and digital platforms in the U.S. and across the world. Star Trek: The Next Generation will, as fans know, be celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2012.“Fans have been clamoring for a high-definition release of Star Trek: The Next Generation," Ken Ross, Executive Vice President and General Manager of CBS Entertainment, said in a statement. “Transferring the series to high-definition presented difficult technical challenges, but our team has come up with a process to create true 1080p HD masters with true HD visual effects. We can’t wait to show fans how pristine the series looks and sounds with our upcoming Blu-ray releases.”
CBS is, in fact, returning to the original film negatives, a mother lode of material encompassing 25,000-plus reels of footage, and editing the episodes together precisely as they were when they originally aired between 1987 and 1994. Visual effects will not be upconverted from videotape, but instead will be recompositioned. The freshly cut film will ultimately be transferred to high definition with 7.1 DTS Master Audio. And all of the work is being done in conjunction with respected, longtime Star Trekfigures Denise and Michael Okuda, who are on board as consultants.
As for that sampler, it will be called Star Trek: The Next Generation -- The Next Level. CBS Home Entertainment has set a January 31, 2012, release date for the single disc, which will include the feature-length version of the series pilot, "Encounter at Farpoint," as well the fan-favorite episodes "Sins of the Father" and "The Inner Light," the former from season three and the latter from season five. The Next Level will sell for the suggested retail price of $21.99.

Trailer for this upcoming release is in the link. Personally, I am very excited for this! I grew up watching TNG and probably watched the entire series dozens of times. Any interested in purchasing the preview of the TNG Bluray which includes "Encounter at Farpoint", "Sins of the Father", and "The Inner Light" get it on amazon for 15 bucs!

For all we know, they did redo the warp effect. Guess we find out on the 31st when the preview releases. I just ordered mine off of Amazon.
Oh wow, I'm getting this!
Did they transfer it or just artificially enhance it? I don't want detail that's not in the film.
Looks glorious, but I'll never be able to afford season 1-7 it will be like 500 dollars, I only got 1-7 on DVD for 45 dollars in China, good luck going back and looking for the new one again.
I totaly want this!!
I love star trek

It looks like they transferred it straight off the 35mm (considered 4K). They probably did some computer stuff to fix the film grain and stuff.

"Visual effects will not be upconverted from videotape, but instead will be recompositioned."
I've never seen an episode of Star Trek, any of them.
Where should I start?
Redoing all the editing and special effects?
Woah

Start with The Original series, if you get bored (which may or may not happen.) Go directly to TNG.

Start with the original series then work your way up to TNG, then you can pretty much stop
Hell yes!

I Prefer the TNG over the Original (I like the original alot, but the TNG has cooler stuff goin on), but to get the best experience out of it view the original first then TNG.
Also i hope they remaster this

What Wii said, TNG is best, but the entire series is best viewed in order.

I think this will be a birth day present for my dad.
i wish they would release Babylon 5 in HD :<
unfortunately all the CG would need to be redone and there is a lot of CG

I think its great that they rendered the entire first series on Commodore Amigas.
It's very impressive.
Fuck me.. read it as "Next Generation Blu-Rays Launch in 2012" ...
I've never even seen the show and this is exciting.
whens voyager coming out?
I fucking love this show, take my money paramount
not gonna bother with seasons 1 and 2 though, before the show found its feet it was a bit of a trainwreck (though maybe I might, just to watch picard say 'SHUT UP WESLEY' in HD)

Yeah, B5 has aged way worse than TNG on account of using CG instead of models.
Good timing - my mom has recently turned me into a Trekkie :v:
whens voyager coming out?
Voyager doesn't need one yet, all there CG and effects are still acceptable to our age of tech.
The show gets good when riker grows a beard
