The transponder code, is supposed to indicate a “hijacking.” Sometimes, pilots accidentally switch to this code or equipment malfunctions. This however, does not appear to be the case. The aircraft can be tracked live via Flightradar 24. This was hopefully just an error, but this was certainly a deviation from normal flight.
Flightradar24: http://www.flightradar24.com/ETH702/2ba40ab
Oh shit.
Oh shit. I can only hope this goes better than the 1996 incident.
Oh holy shit fuck balls this bad.
They are grounding all flights atm
All flights in the Geneva area are grounded. The ones you see on FR24 are ground vehicles.
Hopefully it's a normal ransom hijacking which can be quickly resolved.
Holy shit is this the airplane?
Hopefully it's a normal ransom hijacking which can be quickly resolved.
Heard that it was someone seeking asylum.
Holy shit
Gimmick.
Well what do they expect to do? It's going to run out of fuel eventually. They have what, 13 hours tops? 14 or 15 if they were absolutely full, which would be beyond Max Take Off weight, mind you so it's far shorter than that

Let's just hope that the episode of Air Crash Investigations that results from this is one in which they can talk to passengers...
20 minutes left of fuel is well into the reserves point, damn that's cutting it close
Actual news source
At 5:00pm Pacific Time, Ethiopian Flight 702, a Boeing 767-300 was flying over Sudan when it started squawking 7500. The aircraft can be tracked live via Flightradar 24. This was hopefully just an error, but this iwascertainly a deviation from normal flight. We have reached out to a source who is an aircraft electrical expert and they confirmed that a “7500″ code can’t come from a glitch. The flight, operating from Addis Abba to Rome has been confirmed by Rome Airport not to have arrived yet. It is currently circling over Geneva Airport (GVA), with a military escort. Emergency crews are standing by a GVA. The aircraft landed in Geneva, safely, but with an extremely limited quantity of fuel remaining. This story will be updated as details emerge. We will also be live updating via twitter with #ET702
http://www.airlinereporter.com/2014/02/breaking-ethiopian-airlines-flight-702-squawks-hijacking-reasons-unknown/

They've been doing that increasingly as of late.
Let's just hope that the episode of Air Crash Investigations that results from this is one in which they can talk to passengers...
That's not funny at all.
If Flightradar is anything to go by they look like they're going to land. Looks like they're doing a downwind leg right now
If Flightradar is anything to go by they look like they're going to land
It already did. The ADS-B flight coord data appears to be skewed. Whether or not intentional still in the air.
What is america going to do about this?
That's not funny at all.
Don't think it was meant to be.
It already did. The ADS-B flight coord data appears to be skewed. Whether or not intentional still in the air.
Ah, well disregard then
That's not funny at all.
Even if it was a joke, nobody's injured/dead.
Even if it was a joke, nobody's injured/dead.
I didnt know the plane landed until after I posted that.
What is america going to do about this?
Up the amount of cavity searches.
Wait, so does anybody know what's actually going on?
Being on a hijacked plane seems to be the worst. If you don't end up dying, you end up stuck on the plane for months until counterterrorists storm the plane because the terrorists have an extremely unreasonable demand
They're never full, since fuel is so expensive its cheaper to not fill up planes and waste that extra fuel. It requires more fuel to carry that surplus fuel around than it would to fly to destination on exactly the amount of fuel required + reserve amount.
