John McCain's decision to choose Sarah Palin as his running mate in 2008, according to the Arizona Republican, saying he chose the former Alaska governor because she was a "better candidate." McCain received more than two decades worth of Romney's tax returns as the former Massachusetts governor was undergoing the vetting process four years ago, far more than Romney has released publicly in the 2012 campaign. Democrats have questioned whether McCain saw something untoward in those tax returns and decided to choose Palin instead. But on Tuesday, McCain flatly rejected that assertion and grew angry at questions over his decision to choose Palin over Romney. "Of course not," McCain told POLITICO when asked if the contents of Romney's tax returns disqualified him from the selection process. "I don’t know what depths these people won’t reach. Obviously, it’s just outrageous. That’s just outrageous. It shows the – it’s so disgraceful for them to allege something that they have absolutely no knowledge of." Asked why he chose not to go with Romney, McCain said: "Oh come on, because we thought that Sarah Palin was the better candidate. Why did we not take [Tim] Pawlenty, why did we not take any of the other 10 other people. Why didn’t I? Because we had a better candidate, the same way with all the others. ... Come on, why? That’s a stupid question." Steve Schmidt, McCain's top campaign adviser in 2008, told the Huffington Post that the contents of the tax returns were not viewed as a problem for their campaign. But Romney's vast wealth was seen as a political liability that McCain could ill afford, he said. "Sen. McCain got caught flat-footed answering a question about how many houses he owned," Schmidt told the news website. "In fact, they were Cindy McCain's properties but that distinction was lost in the political optics and we knew it would be a big liability that the presidential and the vice presidential candidates together owned more than a dozen homes. It was like something out of a 'Saturday Night Live' skit. I mean, come on." UPDATE: McCain responded later Tuesday to reactions to his Romney and Palin comments.Read the post here.
I wonder if McCain realizes that picking Palin as his running mate pretty much killed his campaign.
I wonder if McCain realizes that picking Palin as his running mate pretty much killed his campaign.
I think the fact he was a old white, sorta liberal, republican man against a black guy and a woman made his campaign dead in the water.
I wonder if McCain realizes that picking Palin as his running mate pretty much killed his campaign.
I'm sure he does, just as being Mitt Romney is killing Mitt Romney's campaign.
I can't decide who is worse, Palin or Romney
Why choose? They're both terrible.
He makes a good point(in his rebuttal to critics), just because there's a possibility of a lie or forgery doesn't mean it should be publicized in the media. The same message applies to the birther movement, another thing McCain has publicly disagreed with. In comparison to the rest of his party, he is a pretty decent guy. Especially compared Romney and Palin.
I can't decide who is worse, Palin or Romney
One is evil, the other is dumb as shit and probably would be just as evil if she were capable of anything Worse requires a context. Palin would be a puppet, Romney is capable of doing horrible things on his own
I'm sure he does, just as being Mitt Romney is killing Mitt Romney's campaign.
He'd fire himself if he could. [editline]18th July 2012[/editline] Firing people is his favorite pastime.
I actually might have voted for McCain if it wasn't for Palin being his running mate. He's really not so bad.
One is evil, the other is dumb as shit and probably would be just as evil if she were capable of anything Worse requires a context. Palin would be a puppet, Romney is capable of doing horrible things on his own
Romney isn't evil, he's a political moderate and an economic opportunist-capitalist and he capitalizes on both of those issues when he sees fit and lies about them when he sees fit. He's no better or worse than Obama, who is a political liberal-leaning moderate and a social democratic-leaning-capitalist. The only difference is one is blatantly in support of shit economics and the other doesn't touch economics. Palin was just misguided and put on a big show about being a good 'ol every day simple golly gee red-white-and-blue American! with all the conservative social positions that came with that. I don't think she's as stupid as most people make her out to be, but she definitely tried too hard to look simple. Honestly, Romney is by far the most sane and moderate of any of the Republican candidates this election, but having people like Santorum, Gingrich, Paul, Cain, and Bachman really makes me miss McCain, who was at least sane and not some hard-ass social conservative.
I'm pretty sure this is more of an insult towards Romney then it is a compliment to Palin
They both suck let's just leave it at that.
Oh shit son.

This is more damaging than anything Obama could say about him. lol
Uh Palin is stupid if you paid attention to comments she made, and McCain likewise believes her to be better than Romney for a candidate so just how smart is he then?
Well at least Palin is more ideologically consistent than Romney.
I wish McCain or some one like him was running, least he wasn't bat shit insane and he challenged Obama.
I can't decide who is worse, Palin or Romney
I'm convinced that Palin is a blubbering idiot that, when given the chance, would somehow do everything right and be the best leader the country ever had. Like Spongebob as a frycook or some shit. (not serious, obviously)
"Palin was better candidate than Romney" True. She wouldn't have a clue how to abuse power in order to maintain wealth and control with the few. However, Better than Romney =/ Good.
I think the fact he was a old white, sorta liberal, republican man against a black guy and a woman made his campaign dead in the water.
For me, Obama being black didn't really help on the Democrats bid on the white house. If I'm not mistaken, some FPer did post some stats proving this. It was Bush that killed the Republican Party's chance on winning the presidency.
The idea of Palin becoming president if McCain were to keel over actually drove my stepfather to vote for Obama. He was racist, but still thought that a "nigger" as president was better than the alternative.
The idea of Palin becoming president if McCain were to keel over actually drove my stepfather to vote for Obama. He was racist, but still thought that a "nigger" as president was better than the alternative.
Compromise!
In measuring worseness I think Palin gets the worst award. Romney may be many things, but he isn't dumb. She's dumb as a rock, if that rock was really dumb. She's proud of it too, which only serves to magnify how dumb she is. She was so dumb she ran for office representing the political party which purports to stand for 'family values', ie the morality police, and yet her own teenage daughter was getting pregnant without benefit of marriage! At least run as a Democrat for crying out loud!
And on the subject of this news article, McCain said,
"We’ve taken an answer to a question as to why I selected her not Romney and twisted it around of course to some interpretation which is obviously not the case," McCain told reporters. "It’s really getting a little disgraceful, twisting someone’s words when clearly I said and meant that she was the best fit for our campaign."
