[release] An Australian airline has confirmed that an iPhone 4 became red-hot, shattered and started pouring out smoke on a flight from Lismore to Sydney on Friday. Regional Express (Rex) says that, after flight ZL319 landed, a passenger’s phone started emitting clouds of of dense smoke, and started to glow. "In accordance with company standard safety procedures, the flight attendant carried out recovery actions immediately and the red glow was extinguished successfully," says Rex. "All passengers and crew on board were unharmed." The airline says it's reported the incident to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) as well as the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) for investigation. The phone itself - which is now shattered from the heat around the battery - has been handed over to the ATSB for analysis. Apple is no stranger to overheating and expoding batteries. Recently, batteries on early versions of the iPod Nano were found to be at risk of overheating, with one exploding on a packed commuter train in Japan. And two years ago the EU launched an investigation after similar reports of iPhones and iPod Touches catching fire. But it's by no means the only vendor to have trouble with overheating lithium batteries, a problem already acknowledged by CASA: it advises air passengers that electronic items containing them should be held in carry-on luggage only, and kept in separate bags.[/release] http://www.tgdaily.com/mobility-features/59892-iphone-explodes-on-aussie-flight Damn, that is scary. At least there wasn't any crazy people who thought this was terrorism.
Hotplates, there's an app for that.
Well to be honesf. a few within millions is well within error rates you can't control.

inb4 australia bans jokes.
Yeah, I'm putting this one up to factory error. I mean, look at that thing!
in other news the warranty was voided during the 'recovery actions'
possessed by Satan
He's holding it wrong!
I can see it now: An Apple fan somewhere is yelling "It's all falling apart after Steve left!"
It was a result of the lithium ion battery overheating. So before everybody jumps on the Apple hate bandwagon, it's the battery that powers all consumer devices.
Sorry jelly. Bad reading.
i hate apple
Can't believe you're all defending apple about this, its obviously an inherent problem in the design you stupid mac fanboys shit this is bad even for facepunch
Send the Apple executives to the Androidwitz gas chambers for this HORRBILE, piece of TERRIBLE engineering! Android master race! Heil google!
Calm down, there have been two people that mentioned things about how crappy apple is. Both were meant as jokes. Nobody is hating yet.

It was a result of the lithium ion battery overheating. I would never use an Apple product.
My iPhone 4 exploded and ruined not only the phone, but the motherboard of my laptop it was plugged into. So no iWon't be buying another Apple product
Oh my god, JC! [editline]29th November 2011[/editline]
iPhone 4 used as a smokebomb to hijack plane
The iSmoke, it's not a bug, it's a feature!
Almost haopened to me once, I dropped my phone and all of a sudden it got REALLY hot. So I stuck it in the fridge and turned it off.
Australia bans ion batteries, forced to run on solar as we have so much fucking sunlight. Jesus christ.
"All passengers and crew on board were unharmed."
"We were so scared that the iphone was going to kill us."
It's a feature guys don't hate.
Man all the passengers that saw it explode must've been shitting themselves
"We were so scared that the iphone was going to kill us."
I'm pretty sure smoke from electronics is really hazardous, specially in such a small space.
I'm just glad this wasn't me. A middle eastern man holding a glowing red device with smoke coming out of it will not be helped with a fire extinguisher. I'd be beaten with one.
siri, activate self destruct
Well, that could happen to any electronics that uses Li-Po batteries, since they're quite flammable. Look at this video: Don't be afraid of them, these only burst into enormous flames only with heavy misuse. Most of the time when it overheats it will probably just start smoking and get hot, and in that case turn off the device and try to remove the battery immediately. If you're gonna threat them well and follow the guidelines included to them they should be fine.
