• Sex in Nevada desert costs couple $300,000 after triggering heart attack
A COUPLE who had sex in the Nevada desert ended up paying $300,000 for the privilege. Things got steamy when British travellers Peter Cousins and Dawn Reed stripped off and jumped into a hot spring, 100 kilometres from the nearest phone signal. But 55-year-old Mr Cousins started having a heart attack, and Ms Reed was forced to run 5km for help, SWNS reported. She flagged down a truck driver who was able to call an air ambulance on his satellite phone. Mr Cousins was flown to hospital and had a lifesaving stent placed in his heart — but after five days of treatment, he was handed a $300,000 bill. Man that's just outright shit, atleast he lived though.
Jesus that must be terrifying having to leave your husband alone while you run for help not knowing if you'll get it in time.
Did the bill trigger a second heart attack?
Mr Cousins is now single, saddled with debt and back home in the UK — but he says the sex was worth it. Source: Supplied
you cheeky fuck
That fucking bill though lmao Is that what you guys pay if you have a heart attack?
Pretty bad PR for Nevada's tourism industry. Is there any kind of travelers insurance that'd cover something like this?
oi u brits r a rite bunch of cheeky cunts
lovin the casual racism there m8 ill av u for th@
Might be just me overly paranoid but I'd never ever go to the US without a medical insurance.
I assume he simply laughed at the bill, threw it in the nearest garbage can, and got on a plane back to the UK. Pretty much, yeah. The bill never really gets collected in full, though. People just get financially ruined for the rest of their lives. You can't squeeze $300k out of somebody who can't even pay for health insurance. That's what we get for building a country where healthcare is a "privilege", not a human right. It's in the same category as sports cars, video games, and eating out at a nice restaurant. A privilege reserved for those who can pay.
Say I got hit by a car and it wasn't my fault and I didn't have medical insurance, would the person that hit me have to pay?
you cheeky fuck
So you're saying there was anal?
Say I got hit by a car and it wasn't my fault and I didn't have medical insurance, would the person that hit me have to pay?
If it wasn't your fault, it's on him You might be stuck with the bill but you can take them to court for the full amount
Step father had a heart attack, 60% of his heart is still dead, had two stents put in and died (Stopped breathing and his heart stopped) 9 times total. Saved his life at the cost of a cool $250,000 Just having a medical emergency in the USA, and surviving, can sometimes be a fate worse than death, purely because of the financial ruin
And people will actively go out to defend their right to get fucked in the ass by hospitals and insurance companies.
Pretty bad PR for Nevada's tourism industry. Is there any kind of travelers insurance that'd cover something like this?
Yep, but the guy didn't have any travel insurance. Travel insurance would have made this a nonissue tbh.
I really don't want to devolve this thread into a UK vs US flamewar, but honestly I don't fully understand why anyone (except insurance companies, doctors and anyone who makes financial deals with the like) would really want a privatised system - and the thought of having a major injury of sorts in the US really does put me off wanting to visit. God help people who have cancer and can't get the proper help they need.
These are people who believe that a free market is ideal for every industry because "in a free market, the problems solve themselves through competition". Just like we see now with education and health care...
That fucking bill though lmao Is that what you guys pay if you have a heart attack?
air ambulances are fucking expensive my brother was rock climbing and suffered a ground fall. they had to call in a helicopter to fly him back to a hospital about 70 miles away. that + the weekend he spent in the er amounted to about 20-30k he has to pay off since he didn't have health insurance
I assume he simply laughed at the bill, threw it in the nearest garbage can, and got on a plane back to the UK.
Honestly though, what exactly would happen at this case?
Don't screw with me, tea sipper. Our medical facilities are the best in the world.
Doesn't mean shit when nobody can afford them B)

Man, free health care is great.
Say I got hit by a car and it wasn't my fault and I didn't have medical insurance, would the person that hit me have to pay?
generally speaking yes, you'll most likely take him to court for a settlement, my friend and her dad were hit by a car at a gas station and they're recieving a settlement (as well as some sort of good will aid from my college)
Honestly though, what exactly would happen at this case?
If you don't pay your bill then the hospital could directly take money out of your paycheck (I know this can happen to US citizens but I'm not sure of tourists). Maybe the hospital would just forward the bill to his home address and if refused to pay then a subpoena to appear in court possibly. I doubt it would ever get to the point of extradition but you never know if his bank will cooperate with the now-foreign hospital to get the bill paid.
I wish the stubborn as fuck USA would just modernize its healthcare already. Who even wants this system aside from pruney old men?
even REGULAR ambulances are fucking expensive at my college if you need the ambulance it's like $500
even REGULAR ambulances are fucking expensive at my college if you need the ambulance it's like $500
Triple that and it would be accurate. They charge at least $1500 here just to take you to the hospital, and another $3000 if you need to be transferred to a bigger hospital as ours doesn't have a cardiac care center. If you're flown via LifeFlight, just getting on the chopper costs $15K, as it did with my mom when she had a heart attack years ago(had insurance though). They're bastards about it too, if they use any supplies or anything like that, you need to pay for it, at a serious premium. Her entire hospital visit was around $180K after minor surgery. The entire medical system is fucked up, I spent 3 days in because I needed an IV of antibiotics every 6 hours and that would've been $11-12K without insurance. I could've bought the meds illegally, had my mom(RN) start the IV drip, book 3 days in a 4 star suite and still come out at less than half of $11K.
I really wish we could do something about this, my nose has been in serious need of a re-breaking, along with some other things. Although, I bet it would cost me as much to get all the medical work done I need as it would to just pack up and move to Canada.
I do believe the majority of the money is from the helicopter that had to come out and pick him up, life flight is expensive!
even REGULAR ambulances are fucking expensive at my college if you need the ambulance it's like $500
Shit, where I live, this woman needed to be transported from one wing of a hospital to another wing. They weren't attached and it was across a pretty large lot, so they had to put her in an ambulance to transport her. It cost her over $700 for the ride. Basically 13 grand/mile is a funny way to look at it USA Healthcare = Health is a commodity to be traded on the market. Only because insurance companies are involved and do the paying (Even though they'll deny almost every claim the first time in the hopes those making the claim will say Well they said No so we have to pay) it jacks all the prices way up purely because they can. An IV costs $1.40 to make. On your bill it shows up at $400 Those little paper cups you put ketchup in for free at McDonalds? Well in Hospitals they're used to bring you your pills and show up on your bill as a Medication Transportation System for $20 It's worse than a funeral home taking advantage of the grieving with the ol' "You want the best for your deceased love one, don't you?" It's taking advantage of the necessity for well being. It's fucking disgusting
