There have been at least 43 shootings carried by children under the age of three in the United States so far this year. Guns left within reach of toddlers can have tragic consequences.
In 2015 there has been at least one shooting by a toddler a week in the US. Hillary Clinton highlighted the issue during this week's Democrat debate.
“I think that we have to look at the fact that we lose 90 people a day from gun violence,” she said. “This has gone on too long and it's time the entire country stood up against the NRA.”
In 31 of the 43 recorded cases, a toddler found a gun and shot themselves. The Washington Post's Wonkblog examined news reports of toddler gun shootings and analysed who was shot in each accident, and which states in the US have the most prevalent toddler gun shootings.
They found that so far in 2015:
• 13 toddlers have killed themselves with guns
• 18 other small children injured themselves
• 10 injured other people
• Two killed other people

How hard can it be to store your guns and ammo in a LOCKED cabinet or locker?
Also why the hell is a motherfucking radish manning a M2 Browning
here we go
That's about half as many as we have murders here in Denmark total, no matter the weapon. Closer if we assume this will continue until new year's eve. At least lock yer' guns up, guys.
How hard can it be to store your guns and ammo in a LOCKED cabinet or locker?
I believe its because a lot of people buy them for protection and they figure that putting it in a locked cabinet will make it too hard to get to in an emergency "oh shit someone is in my house" situation.

You are asking the real hard hitting questions now

There's also 58x as many people in America, with way too many other differences like laws, poverty, traditions etc.

When you think about it, rifles and even sub machine guns are too unwieldy for a child to wield, meaning that crew-served weapons are far more suitable for children. Mounted emplacements don't have as much of an issue with weight and recoil, they can be disassembled and carried by a bunch of 'em, and it builds teamwork.
(joking of course)
I believe its because a lot of people buy them for protection
Protection from what? Its not like there are murders living in every house on their street.
There's also 58x as many people in America, with way too many other differences like laws, poverty, traditions etc.
Yes, the US has a tradition of poor, disenfrachised toddlers living in the street shooting themselves with guns.
I'm just saying it's a lot, considering these are simply accidents involving a pretty specific demographic.
There's also 58x as many people in America, with way too many other differences like laws, poverty, traditions etc.
Even if you adjust the numbers in that ratio, they nowhere near match.
I believe its because a lot of people buy them for protection
Protection against what? It seems like Americans shoot each other more than people who actually need to be shot.
Protection against what? It seems like Americans shoot each other more than people who actually need to be shot.
Protection against murderous toddlers of course.
Soooooo... So far 15 people are dead due to toddlers. If that number could possibly be any more negligible, I don't see how. Terrible for those families, but statistically that is as close to zero as you can hope. I am amazed it isnt a higher number.
here we go
"Hey, how about we store it away from children?"
"God, why do you people constantly start fights over guns?"
Ban toddlers.
We should really be teaching toddlers better gun safety.
Protection against what? It seems like Americans shoot each other more than people who actually need to be shot.
Are you implying that anyone that isn't American needs to be shot?

Not at all, I'm saying a lot of shootings are accidental, gang related etc. They shoot each other instead of actual threats such as terrorists and the like.

What? No one buys guns to shoot terrorists. Haha
There is an easy solution to this.
Gu... birth control.
Trigger locks guys, come on... It isn't that difficult.

if only there was a way to reduce those "negligible" numbers

Children probably accidentally shoot people with guns in their house's in tons of countries, just because the majority are reported in the US doesn't mean it only happens in the US.
What? No one buys guns to shoot terrorists. Haha
No, seriously, that IS why some people buy guns around here these days, they're worried ISIS is going to spill over into the US any day now.

In other countries that pertain to this debate if a toddler could get to your gun you're not storing it legally

But since it is the US people will use anything and everything as an excuse to point out how much of a lawless wildwest shootemup we are.
Children probably accidentally shoot people with guns in their house's in tons of countries, just because the majority are reported in the US doesn't mean it only happens in the US.
Name one country where someone getting shot by a toddler would not get reported.

Flagdog says you're Australian. Let's have a look at Australia for a second. Factoring in population differences (319 million vs 23 million), and drawing from the statistic of 254 animal-related deaths in the last 10 years in Australia, and extrapolating the 15 deaths due to toddlers to a whole year, the net conclusion is that as an Australian you are just under twenty times more likely to be killed by Australian wildlife than an American is to be shot by a toddler. What steps has your country taken to limit the danger posed by horses?
So far in the US there have been 26 lightning deaths this year. An American is just under twice as likely to be struck and killed by lightning as they are to be shot and killed by a toddler. What steps has our country taken to limit the danger posed by lightning?
Last year 269 Americans died at railroad crossings. What steps has our country taken to limit the danger posed by railroad crossings? It wouldn't take much to reduce this number, just put up better barriers, but we generally accept that getting hit by a train at a railroad crossing is caused by gross negligence and isn't a significant source of death.
These shootings caused by toddlers are needless deaths caused by gross irresponsibility with firearms and any gun owner who leaves easily-accessible, loaded firearms within reach of unsupervised children is an idiot inviting completely preventable tragedy. I'm 100% for more public awareness about this issue and greater liability on the part of gun owners for damage caused by their guns being misused. But don't make this issue out to be more than it is, it really is a statistically insignificant source of death.
