The 15-year-old boy accused of stabbing and killing a 17-year-old, as well as critically injuring an adult man and two children at a Geneva Township home in western Midland County this morning, has been arraigned.
Steven J. Pribbernow is charged as an adult in the case, and faces one count of open murder plus three counts of assault with the intent to murder.
Midland County Prosecutor Mike Carpenter asked District Judge Stephen P. Carras to deny bail and place Pribbernow in the county jail rather than the Juvenile Care Center during the arraignment, conducted late this afternoon. Carpenter said considering the ages of the juvenile victims — 15 and 13 1/2 — Pribbernow presents a risk to other youngsters at the detention center.
Midland attorney Dan Duke has been appointed by the court as defense attorney, and said he has discussed the prosecutor’s request with Pribbernow.
“I think at the present time ... it makes sense,” to place his client in the jail, Duke said.
Pribbernow was brought to the hearing, his hands cuffed behind his back, scratches visible on his right forearm. He wore a baggy dark blue patterned polo shirt and green slacks that emphasized his small stature, facing Carras as he read the charges. At the third count, Pribbernow looked down.
Both open murder and assault with the intent to commit murder are punishable by up to life in prison.
“Given the seriousness of this offense coupled with the many other aggravating factors, I have decided to charge this young man as an adult. Based on what I have reviewed and observed at the crime scene, this man poses a serious risk to our community,” Carpenter wrote in a media release.
Earlier today, Carpenter said he was awaiting updates on the victims’ medical conditions, as well as researching the law as it applies to juveniles and reviewing reports on the incident, before making a decision on charges. He also said prosecutors were working to determine the dynamics of the family, which includes numerous children with different last names, a divorce and an adoption. He could not confirm that the home was a foster care provider; other court officials said it is not.
The names of the victims, as well as the reason for the attack, are not being released, said Midland County Sheriff’s Capt. Mike Goodall.
Carpenter confirmed an adult male was in poor medical condition. He was airlifted from the scene, a home at 5180 W. McNally Road, by FlightCare to a Saginaw hospital about 7 a.m. A third victim was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Mount Pleasant, and a fourth victim was taken by ambulance to the MidMichigan Medical Center. All three are undergoing surgery.
Goodall said the suspect was injured and also was taken to MidMichigan.
The incident was reported at 6:30 a.m., bringing all on-duty sheriff’s deputies, the Coleman Community Fire Department, four ambulances, MidMichigan Medical Center EMS, Chief Deputy Medical Examiner Dennis Wagner and the helicopter, which landed in the home’s front yard. First responders were told to wait a distance from the home while deputies secured the scene before entering to render medical aid.
Goodall said the weapon was a knife, but he did not know what kind of knife it was. Deputies were able to take the suspect into custody without incident.
There were people inside the home who were not injured. Goodall said a detective interviewed them this morning.
The home — a ranch with a basement and attached garage — is set back from the road, accessible by a gravel drive and ringed by a fence and pine trees. Early on, deputies used yellow tape to block the property at the road.
The body of the person who was killed rested on the ground just outside the home’s garage door, covered with a yellow tarp. The body was taken away by ambulance after crime scene technicians from the Michigan State Police Crime Lab at Bridgeport collected evidence.
I knew the 17 year old that was killed, he went to my school and was a year ahead of me. I don't know if Steven Pribbernow is his brother or what. Feels odd to see something like this, my town is an extremely well-to-do town with hardly any crime, so it is really weird to see something like this.

It's those gosh darn videya games
I go to the same school as the OP and I sorta knew the victim, I've seen him before at school but I didn't know him personally. It's really messed up though.
That's a real shame, i wonder why he did that.
Execute him.
How does a 17 year old allow a 15 year old kid stab him to death? If some 15 year came at me with a knife I'd own the bitch. Unless it was a surprise stab in which case poor guy.
what a brat
I wonder what the crazy kid's family was like?
It's Grand theft auto san andreas' fault.

why don't news stories ever release background information on the case
sure they say the kid is being charged as an adult, but what was the motive?

Would have been funnier without the picture.

No.

The system works.
The system works.
Yes, it does. The kid apparently is completely fucking unwrapped. A functional human doesn't stab his older brother to death and then try to kill 3 other people do they?
The system works.
Not unless he is executed.
life isnt a video game, you would probably get your ass kicked if you werent trained to disarm someone, or to withstand a stab wound.
No but if someone is coming at you with a knife you could always get away.
Also, a kick, even an improperly executed one, would work, since the 17 year old probably has longer legs and more strength. Since the details are not being released, no one knows, but it makes more sense that it was a surprise stab.
Not unless he is executed.
The mere fact that he will be treated as an adult is enough. He's fucked and he should be.

He's 15, not 6. Why anyone would consider trying a person differently at that age is beyond me. Once you reach about 14 years old, you should be held fully accountable for any crimes you commit unless you're insane or under some kind of heavy influence. And I don't mean alcohol, like that Chinese asshole who killed four people with his car, I'm talking some kind of brainwashing or some shit.

You should always be held accountable for your actions.
If a 4 year old kills someone, then the 4 year old even though it doesn't understand the system of law, should go into prison or a mental hospital because anyone who even does crimes underage is a complete idiot and isn't needed in the world.
If the world didn't have any idiots whatsoever then we might of landed on Mars in the 80's.
No story? Just details of his sentence and some details about the victims? Lame.

Yeah, the 1780s.
Does he go to adult prison?
Does he go to adult prison?
No, he goes to the children's prison.
He sure is fucked.
What the hell drives people to do this kind of shit? :frown:
Broken families, I guess. The Columbine shooters, the guy at Virginia Tech, and pretty much all the others who do these things have horrible family lives.
These kids are getting worse and worse at these killing sprees.
