The shocking shooting at a San Jose State University parking garage that left three people dead is being investigated as a murder-suicide, university police said this morning.
As students attended evening classes, a shooter opened fire inside a San Jose State campus garage Tuesday night.
Authorities were alerted at 8:36 p.m. about the shooting at San Fernando and 10th streets.
"I don't think we've had anything like this before," said Sgt. John Laws, a campus police spokesman.
San Jose State police were tight-lipped about the shooting and would not release further information about the suspect or victims. But authorities said they did not believe the shooting was random.
The suspect was shot in the incident and later died at a hospital. Authorities would not disclose how the suspect was injured.
As the evening wore on, hundreds of onlookers milled around the street as university police investigated the shooting, which happened on the fifth floor of the campus's main garage, a six-level structure that also houses the student services center.
People nearby reported hearing pops that sounded like fireworks. Laws said witnesses who were inside the garage when the shooting started were being interviewed.
With the garage cordoned off, students were left stranded and searching for answers.
"I'm just surprised it happened here. I never thought it would happen at this school," said Josh Tullo, 30, a senior. He had just finished an evening class and was heading to the garage before he made a detour for dinner instead.
Tuesday's shooting was the second triple-shooting in San Jose in four days and marked the city's 19th and 20th homicides of the year. A shooting at a party Saturday left two dead and one hurt..
SJSU spokeswoman Pat Lopes Harris said students were alerted via a campuswide notification system, but some students complained on Facebook and Twitter that officials took too long to do so.
This just happened last night, no wonder there were free parking and so many news vans around.

Yeah man, ._. but that adds on to the fact that people.. suicide in that same garage.
My friend's okay, and he said that from what he knows the two shot were boyfriend and girlfriend, and the shooter was the girl's ex-boyfriend. So there's that.
I told you so, this is a direct reaction to the US Government recognizing video games as art. Dem studies doont lie.

It's also apparently the mugging hotspot.
Also, the notification system sucks. I'm signed up for it and didn't get a text until midnight that the garage was locked down.

I'm guessing there aren't a lot of suicides there by jumping from the bottom.
