North Korea said it would send athletes and a high-level delegation to the Winter Olympics in South Korea next month, and wants to resolve issues on the divided peninsula through dialogue and negotiations.
Delegates from Seoul said that South Korea wants both nations to march together at the Games to be held in Pyeongchang. The two sides held talks at Panmunjom, a village in the Joint Security Area along the heavily fortified border that divides the Korean Peninsula.
South Korea also proposed reunions of families divided by the Korean War during the upcoming Lunar New Year, as well as a resumption of military dialogue.
North Korea Urges Live Broadcast of Meeting (10:45 a.m.)
North Korea’s top negotiator urged his South Korean counterpart to consider allowing a live broadcast of the talks that started Tuesday.
"There are high expectations, so we wish to open this meeting to the public so that it can be broadcast live to all Koreans," Ri Son Gwon, chairman of North Korea’s Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland, told his South Korean counterpart in his opening remarks at the first high-level meeting between the countries in more than two years.
It would be crazy if Trump managed to threaten North Korea into a more peaceful direction.
Hopefully if we treat them like a normal country they'll become a normal country.
I have my reservations though.
Too bad all NK citizens are gonna see is just another "best korea won all medals, pigdog usa disqualified".
I almost want NK to send athletes to the Olympics just to see them lose at everything. Hopefully it would chip away at the idea of NK superiority.

It would be cathartic for us, but it's just another propaganda opportunity for the North Koreans.
All of this seems almost out of nowhere to me. Where did this sudden desire to negotiate and work together come from on NKs part? The answer I expect people to give is probably related to Trump but I just don't see it.
KJU probably feels more secure in his power given the norks (apparent) success of a nuclear program, and seems to be hoping to normalize relations. Seeing this through the lens of "Kim Jong Un wants to stay alive and in power" this makes sense, even if the logic is a bit twisted.

the Olympics provide North Korea a chance to show off, or tell their people propaganda. Plus North Korea sees the bomb as the ultimate bargaining chip. Now that they apparently have a successful nuke and delivery system, they see an opportunity to play ball and perhaps try to loosen restrictions. Kim doesn't want to go to war, he wants to stay alive. Not to mention there are a lot of people who actually think Trump intends to go to war with NK, too. So perhaps Kim sees war as an actual response to his typical bullshit and doesn't know how much they can get away with anymore. That + the bomb means they don't really have to be as gun-ho as always.
They'll probably be back at it again but a bit of dialogue is good.

This makes enough sense to me, really. Thanks!

NK is playing a long game. If they've truly managed to construct a functioning nuke and delivery system, then they've reached the point where they're ready to calm down their relations with the rest of the world since they no longer have to fear for their very survival. The next step after that would be to negotiate their way out of the international sanctions so they'll have a chance of fixing their shambles of economy, and set them on the path to modernization.
Alternatively, this is just a temporary show of friendliness to get their foot into the Olympics.

More likely now that Trump's rhetoric has built them up as being this all powerful military force that only the US can crush, South Korea has no choice but to do anything. Also the crops probably failed in the North given the shape all of the defectors have been, sans the bullet holes

What if it turned out you actually needed to fight really crazy, with really crazy, in this case?

Abusing an underflow glitch, the mad man.
