If only money hadn't been wasted on Denuvo and server upkeep...
Did it fail? I guess if you look at the numbers. I enjoyed it.
Episodic was part of the deal with Square Enix since IO had money troubles. If it's between no Hitman game at all and an episodic Hitman game, I know which one I'd pick every day of the week.
Good thing IO get to keep the Hitman IP though and SE doesn't hold onto that.
"Even the Space Jam website has gotta go away eventually."
Don't tempt fate George. You're putting important shit at risk here. Just zip it.
It maddens me to no end 2017 is the best in the series since blood money (maybe better tbh) and it got so looked over by fucking everyone
As someone who has played every hitman game that has came out, this one is by far the best.
It plays like bloodmoney and adds to the game without muddying it. The atmosphere and the maps are fucking amazing, the game-play is solid and spot on, re-play factor is out of this world...this is a solid fucking game. They should have marketed this game harder, it would have made more sales. All the other hitmans had solid marketing.

The game had good news coverage. Every new episode would get reviewed and a bunch of new articles would be made on various sites. And when you would browse down to the comments it was always the same stuff "Fuck Square Enix and these episodic releases", "Release the complete game when it's done, I wont support this", etc... There was a very loud and annoying minority always spreading hate on every release. I think without the episodic releases none of the levels would be as polished and well made.

thanks youtube
The always-online DRM was the only thing that stopped me from getting it. It could be the best game ever made and that'd still turn me off.
Probably always online to enforce the stupid elusive contract bullshit. I'm sure it didn't help the budget to make a free level every month that lasts for less than a week and a single play either. Fantastic.
Always online killed it. It was an amazing game but the always online was horrid. It actively barred you from content if you were trying to play offline, which is bullshit. I still love hitman 2017, but it died literally because of their shitty business practices.
I assume it's Square who made the decisions for always-online? Or was it IO? It's hard to tell who's exactly at fault here, because even without the shoddy deadlines, the game was DOA with this DRM crap.
Shame too. It's amazing. Better than Blood Money IMO.
God that always online bullshit was so stupid. "Let's waste money on keeping up servers for our singleplayer game! Oh no, the game didn't sell enough and we paid so much now for the servers, welp, goodbye IO."

Given how hard Squenix west fucked over Eidos Montreal with DXMD forcing in-game purchases and breach mode there's no doubt it was the publisher's decisions that lead to this.
I just hope a good publisher buys them and not one of the shit ones that seem to enforce money grabbing tactics.
I would have bought it if it wasn't for that always online DRM. Love me some Hitman but I'm not gonna spend my money on anti consumer practices like that.

This, and the episodic model was it's demise, out of sheer bad PR if nothing else.
One of the best Hitman game but why the forking Online bullcrap and limited one time Elusive Target? I love the game but I can't recommend people to buy it. This game could easily be the one of the best games in long time if they just removed the online crap and allow people to play Elusive Targets.
Fuck Square Enix
Gotta agree with his assessment personally. I didn't get this game because its reputation seemed to be "good, but with a lot of annoying BS attached to it", and I have a whole library of "good without BS" games waiting to be played.
That said, I'm not sure if I buy into his counter-argument for stealth being a niche genre. His counter-examples of MGS V and DXHR are both "play the game YOUR way" types where you can go into a missions with ambitions of stealth, mess it up instantly, switch to guns blazing and still finish the mission successfully. Stealth is just an option.
SE really doesn't understand its Euro/NA IPs in the slightest, I mean they called DX:HR just a "favorable result" and yet their marketing wanks/management didn't get the hint to not fuck with DX:MD.

On some level you can do the same in Hitman depending on what you are willing to tolerate. The game is quite forgiving (and dumb) with searching rooms, noticing your disguises and locking targets down after some violent event so you can easily try doing something stealthily, fail and spend 2 minutes hiding somewhere then you can grab another disguise and do another attempt.
Or find a sweet spot where you can draw your gun where the bodyguards for some reason don't notice you (spots where you would be noticed if this was real life) shoot the target and then hop in a box and wait it out and in the end only your end of level score is affected but who gives a shit about that if you are only going for the challenges. You kinda have to set your own rules if you want it to be truly stealthy.
Obviously it gets nowhere near as guns blazing as DX or MGSV but its not an unforgiving stealth/assassination game by any means.

There was like no marketing, especially around the time where the game was actually releasing (eg the whole game with all the episodes)
One of the big problems with episodic games, because while many people will buy them as they come out there's also a lot who aren't going to touch it until it's all finished, so you basically need two marketing campaigns. Hell, ideally you'd need a marketing campaign running the entire span the episodes are coming out, but that would be insane.
And then there's the always online DRM bullshit and the timed one-off missions. Those things certainly didn't do it any favors.
Also just to shill for piracy a little, there was definitely a group of fans who were not confident enough in it's quality to buy it before they had a chance to try it. Hard to say how many though since it's such a taboo subject.
It really pisses me off in the games business that so often can publishers throw developers under the bus and let the developer take all the fallout.
Weirdly enough while playing the game (I bought the complete set a few months ago) I kept thinking 'This would be much more enjoyable if I actually was playing it as it came out' but I admit I might be a minority and in the end I waited for the whole collection to be out before getting it so I can't complain too much.
My reasoning was: There is so much to do in every level, so much to explore, so many challenges to do. But if you have access to all the missions it takes a lot away from me wanting to replay those levels. I pretty much did all the challenges in the first two levels but the rest I kinda rushed through or focused on one or two cool challenges. Now if I had a month or so between every level I feel like I would have played the crap out of each and every one while waiting for the next episode to come out.
That being said maybe I'd be too annoyed with waiting and forget about the game completely.

Deus Ex isn't even really a stealth game. It's a game where stealth is an option. Kinda like calling Crysis a stealth game imo
And MGSV is the least stealth focused game in the (main) series. Coincidentally, also the best selling one.

Metal Gear has always been a stealth action series. Hitman is more of a pure stealth series, which makes SBH calling it stealth action seem odd, and stealth games have always been a niche genre.
Literally every stealth game I've played I've seen people complain that they're not actiony enough and that there should be more shooting. Like there isn't an overwhelming array of options for action games already.

sneaking up on people and punching them in the head is the only proper way to play deus ex
