Fucking terrifying what these guys went through. Especially with little to no warning because of how fast the fire spread.
Was planning on going there this weekend. It's devastating. The amount of structures that burned down is unreal. Ripley's Aquarium and Dollywood was threatened, as well as many other big attractions. Luckily everything is okay now. No animals harmed.
This fire started late Monday night, early Tuesday EST and engulfed an entire mountain side in a matter of hours and worked its way into the town, making a 16 story hotel into an inferno, and hundreds of other structures.
Only 3 deaths recorded so far. Lets hope it stays that way.
All of Western NC has been plagued with wildfires for almost a month. We just got the giant ones contained and this happens. We just got rain for the first time in close to 40 days and it helped a lot. But high winds made this fire spread insanely fast.
