Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) asserted last week that if Congress does not raise the debt ceiling and allows the United States to default on its debt then it “would be an impeachable offense by the president.”
The Young Turks caught up with the Texas Republican on Friday at the Values Voter Summit and asked him if he would vote on any deal to raise the debt ceiling.
“It just depends on what it is,” he replied. “The word ‘deal’ concerns me… if it’s good for America.”
“Would you allow us to default on our debt?” a reporter from The Young Turks wondered.
“No, that would be an impeachable offense by the president,” Gohmert declared.
During an interview with Newsmax TV last week, Gohmert had said that the president didn’t mind “seeing America suffer,”

Sensationalist headlines.
Ugh, politics.
Yeah why hasn't Obama signed the budget deal that is sitting on his desk after being agreed upon by the Senate and House?
Oh wait.
Gohmert is an ignorant tool for the party and this shutdown has illuminated that plainly.
We all knew the "it's Obummer's fault for the gubmint shutdown!" was inevitable.
muh separation
Louie Gohmert is a national embarrassment.
It needs to be a hangable offense for Louie Gohmert, Ted Cruz, and the rest of their ilk.
Acting angry over a shutdown they caused while pinning the blame on the President of the United States, who had nothing to do with any of it. Ridiculous behavior. Absolutely ridiculous.
These people deserve nothing else but our intolerance and our hatred. Their earthly existence is an embarrassment.

How do people like this even breathe?
I don't know whats worse, that people can walk around and say this seriously or that people believe it.
How do people like this even breathe?
If the action wasn't physically involuntary, they'd probably argue with that too.
How do people like this even breathe?
Well you know how most people just breathe and cycle oxygen involuntarily?
Yeah well these people just gulp down air as their body starts screaming "OH GOD WHY IS THERE SO MUCH CO2!?"

Really? I pictured it sounding like the dad from Dumb and Dumberer. "There's shit everywhere!"
Congress can be impeached for violating the 14th amendment if they allow the country to default. If they do take us to that cliff, however, the President could theoretically invoke the 14th amendment power to take it upon himself to raise the debt ceiling or possibly abolish it entirely. It would no doubt go to the supreme court, who would likely uphold the decision.
It's like they aren't even on the same planet as us.
I'm fairly certain now that congress exists in an alternate dimension where one enters but is never really able to leave...I call this dimension Politics

14th amendment has nothing to do with this debate, go read it. that clause doesn't cover the debt ceiling

don't listen to fox, they have never read the constitution, the 14ths clause about debt only covers debt incrued during the civil war

What doesn't it have to do with the debt ceiling? Section 4 of the amendment states "The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned."
The debt ceiling being hit hinders our ability to honor those debts.

Where does it state that it only covers debt incurred during the civil war??
imagine being a person who thinks that both parties are just as bad as each other

the part about "insurection or rebellion"
Get a load of this guy
it would require a major re-evaluation of the 14th amendment, something the president could not do himself by just saying he can. This would become another quagmire like what happened in 2000 with the bush election
To be fair it was an interview, some people mess up with their words.
Can't obama issue an executive order to fix this? What I'd love is if he issued an executive order that fired all of congress and went to find replacements, but that won't be happening.
It's disturbing these dudes call themselves patriots, yet they were planning for this shutdown so they could get their way. It's ridiculous how zealous people have gotten over this bullshit.
Ahahaha, yeah no.
I wish we could tally up the number of Republican lawmakers that use the word "impeach" in reference to Obama verses the number of Democratic lawmakers that used the same word in reference to Bush during his entire administration.
Failing to stop Congress from intentionally defaulting on the debt is grounds for impeachment, but lying to start a war that killed over a hundred thousand civilians isn't? Yeah, right.
An honest question from somebody who knows jack about state finances. How can the US keep raising the debt celiling indefinitely? What is stopping these guys from saying "our debt ceiling is 1000 trillion trillion" and call it a day? They're at ~14 trillion already, what makes banks & other lenders think they will ever get their money back?
How about a congress-caused default is a mandatory firing of the members of congress and a launching of a special election.

So you're saying that our government is being run by the ancient souls of the damned, trapped within a realm where nothing happens and no one can or will do anything, unable to ever leave or be useful?
Yeah, that seems about right. I think they already named it Limbo though, back in the old days, but a little rebranding never hurts.

Because the US does pay back it's debt. And then they borrow more.
raise the debt ceiling? wtf fucking obama just pushing problems down the line
don't raise the debt ceiling? wtf fucking obama doesn't he care about the people

A significant percentage of the debt is money the US borrowed from itself, which is weird to think about.
I don't remember the specifics, but I remember learning about it in school.
That's not the only dumb shit Louie's been saying. Here's another groaner:
