Blurred Lines, the song by Robin Thicke, has been banned by the universities of Derby and West of Scotland (UWS). They join Edinburgh and Leeds in taking a stance against lyrics students say "undermine and degrade women". The song will also not be played on SubTV, a channel broadcast in over 100 universities.
The controversial tune came under heavy criticism over the summer for its lyrics such as "I hate these blurred lines" and "I know you want it", as well as its video, banned from YouTube, in which a fully clothed Thicke and Pharrell Williams flirt with naked models.
Holly O'Connor, president of the University of Derby students' union, says: "All the students I've spoken to are really offended by the song because it promotes rape and lad culture."
"We wanted to take a stance and say that it is not acceptable to objectify women in such a way. The song suggests there are blurred lines in sexual consent and obviously there are not. It's important that our venues are all safe spaces, which is why we chose to ban the song."
Nice censorship going on there.

Well it's hardly like they're censoring something good or important.
Well it's hardly like they're censoring something good or important.
Well then just wait until they do start to censor something good or important.
what the fuck is "lad culture"
anyway, that's kinda bullshit. you should be allowed to have the option listen to what you want, no matter what it promotes or what kinda of meaning it has. there's worse shit out there than blurred lines.
All you people who cry out censorship in completely retarded situations that don't even properly fulfil it's basic definition deserve to experience what a real censorship is like.
Whaaat? Now what song am I gonna listen to to get me in the mood for date rape, drug rape, sleep rape or drunk rape? Fucking-.. God damn it!
i'd just like to congratulate robin thicke for writing a literal, unironic rape anthem
Well then just wait until they do start to censor something good or important.
"First they censored that one shitty song, and then they started to censor our testosterone."
It's not like this is the start of some massive campaign to censor everything they find offensive, and if it is, then people will probably start to speak out about it.

Nobody is keeping you from keeping or distributing copies of it through your own means or listening to it in privacy. University campus is a society which necessarily deploys self regulating measures to keep it's confines peaceful and if you dislike some rule, nobody holds you in there.
if you dislike some rule, nobody holds you in there.
Hey, check this out
"if you dislike some song, nobody makes you listen to it"
The song is shit and the meaning is terrible but it's wasted effort and time banning it, and banning music, no matter how shitty, is a very slippery slope.

Yeah, like swastikas, racist slurs, slander, verbal abuse, that sort of thing.
Would really suck if you couldn't express all these great things.
Jesus christ who cares? Oh no a single song won't be played on internal uni tv's boo fucking hoo.
Should boycott it instead of ban it. It's creepy, sexist and rapey song but censoring it isn't good for society in the long term.
When I was working for an NFL team over the summer, our video editor/reporter made and released a video of the cheerleaders to this song.
HUGE uproar in upper management and ownership happened. Bunch of people got fired and that video is nowhere to be found now.
It's kind of funny because the Miami Dolphins did the same thing like a month later and that video is still up and perfectly fine.
Hey, check this out
Have you ever been on a campus?
There are times when you can't avoid contact, and while there are things that you should be able to deal with in others doing in privacy, there are some that have to be entirely omitted to ensure peaceful coexistence.

Please no slippery slope
Yeah, like swastikas,
Fair enough.

racist slurs,

You get that here on here
slander,

Already been done on here, someone was doxed in the RC by sheridanm
verbal abuse, that sort of thing.

Again, already present on this forum.

Yeah, this world would be full of friendly people...

Are you seriously comparing a niche internet forum with an university campus?

I just don't get why this song is having so much controversy around it over plenty of other provocative ones though.

Talk about getting blasted
I hate these blurred lines
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
But you're a good girl
The way you grab me
Must wanna get nasty
it's a song about how a drunk girl grabbing him is a "blurred line" of consent and that she totally wants it. that's why people are upset over it. it's a song promoting the idea that drunk girls are asking for it.
all it's probably 'banning' is allowing it to be played at events or by the school radio or something, nobody's going door to door searching for underground distributed copies, and I'm completely OK with this method. It's its own institution, who's to say they don't want people playing rapey shit at a college campus like the school's fine with the message
this isn't "OH GOD THEY'RE CENSORING THE MASSES", this is basic "college doesn't like the idea of allowing 'the daterape song' at dances" and made an official "don't do that"

Thanks for the info. Song lyrics don't exactly click with me for whatever reason.
Are you seriously comparing a niche internet forum with an university campus?
University campuses aren't any better than the real world. We have people play music on my campus all the time. Uncensored rap is among it, and nobody ever complains about audible lyrics with the words "nigga" and "mothafucka."
It's as simple as using your own headphones and not listening to shitty rape advocating music.
I've never listened to the song and from what I know of it I'd rather not. And from what I know of it, I'm entirely ok with this.
I hate the song, video, and lyrics, and think Thicke is an absolute douchebag.
But the song should not be censored.
Are you seriously comparing a niche internet forum with an university campus?
Nope, believe it or not, this is not the only place such things go on.
Racist slurs occur in real life,
rumours too,
and verbal abuse.
When was the last time you left your house and ventured into the real world?

Clearly you're lying, I need to make another kneejerk reaction without actually reading the article for clarification!
Might as well gan all gangsta rap, extreme metal genres, ect. for their 'undesirable' lyrics while they're at it then
Or just don't ban any music

if only the students had a CD on them this wouldn't have happened

Why the fuck do you keep drawing the conclusion that something HAPPENING SOMEWHERE should be tolerated EVERYWHERE?
Why the fuck do you keep drawing the conclusion that something HAPPENING SOMEWHERE should be tolerated EVERYWHERE?
I'm not, your argument is quite pointless, you're saying it'd suck if we can't express negativity, I'm merely opposing your opinion with valid reason.
Why the fuck do you keep drawing the conclusion that something HAPPENING SOMEWHERE should be tolerated EVERYWHERE?
It shouldn't be tolerated, but I don't think we should be shielding college students from what happens outside their gilded, crime-free and judgment free campuses. No toleration doesn't eliminate the problem either way.
