Woman Who Assembles iPads Shown iPad for First Time in Her Life

"Mrs. Chen," as CNN calls her, works in a Foxconn plant installing iPad screens for virtually every waking hour of her life. Despite this, she never actually saw an iPad until CNN whisked her away. Her reaction will surprise you.
The video investigation, popping up (deliberately) close to the NY Times' piece on Apple labor practices, tells us what we already know: many Foxconn employees complain of inhumane conditions while building the gadgets we love:
During my first day of work, an older worker said to me, ‘why did you come to Foxconn? Don't ever think about it again and leave right now'…Foxconn employees have a saying, "they use women as men and men as machines… there's another way of saying it, ‘they use women as men, and use men as animals."
But when Mrs. Chen is handed an iPad—an object that's for her entirely foreign, despite being front of her face daily—she loves the alien slate that rules her life. "I like it," she says, adding that she'd like to own one someday if she ever has enough money. Not even brutal, humanity-bending work conditions are enough to kill gadget lust.[/release]

I'm thoroughly checking to see if any electronics I purchase in the future have any components manufactured by FoxConn, and I suggest you all do the same.
If it does, I'm not purchasing a product. That's how a consumer protests and shows their dissatisfaction.

good luck, almost everything uses foxconn parts.
-Ninja'd-
So now I have a reason to not buy apple products apart from them being subpar and restrictive and just generally expensive pieces of hipster shit.

What's with people saying Apple products are for hipsters? They're pretty ~mainstream~ you know.
It's weird to think about that this is the only reason why everything is so cheap, because they don't have to pay them shit, I wonder...if they actually had to pay them a minimum wage of 7-8$...what would the price hike be? Insane I can imagine.

I think we could put up with it.
Someone should buy this woman an iPad. She's never going to be able to afford one :(
I think we could put up with it.
But I'm wondering if it could be a doubling of price? Every worker that does anything's pay will multiply by 7 so I dunno if its too crazy to think it could double, and such a doubling would be unbearable to be honest
Now I'd like to see some articles on Foxconn but for the other numerous products they build.

Wow, shit.
You know what? I think I'm gonna stick to it. I haven't needed to buy any new electronics for quite some time and most of my hobbies and activities don't require it. The least we can do is put the word out about the conditions of the factories and who purchases and utilizes Foxconn products.
What's with people saying Apple products are for hipsters? They're pretty ~mainstream~ you know.
because the "hipster" label doesn't factor obscurity anymore. Now it basically it just means "vaguely liberal/cosmopolitan". Unless we find a better word and abandon "hipster" for that one, "hipster" will eventually just mean "not a redneck".
That video is so sad. Imagine doing nothing but working and sleeping. can't talk while on the work floor. Get lest then a dollar an hr. sad <3

Maybe, but we should be willing to make sacrifices if it means these people get treated more fairly.

If that's a reason not to buy Apple products, I suggest you look through this to make a list of other products you won't buy.
that food looks delicious

And then there's no telling what else uses Foxconn parts that isn't consumer electronics. Their products could be under the hood of your car or in your microwave!
Foxconn is inescapable. If you use it, and it is electronic, chances are they had a hand in making it.
Maybe, but we should be willing to make sacrifices if it means these people get treated more fairly.
Yes...however, it would damage the economy catastrophically, with the electronics market coming to a near grinding halt, but this all assumes that the companies actually keep their already jacked up prices...but I think they'd lower them because they'd get no sales at obscene prices.

Don't quote me on this, but I read somewhere that if we stopped using Chinese labor and began making Ipads in the USA that the price would rise by about 25-27%.
So it's really not that much.
Less than a dollar an hour...
Holy shit.
That's Capitalism.
foxconn is a shit company. i don't see why they can't automate iPad manufacturing.
[editline]7th February 2012[/editline]
simply providing jobs would be good enough for foxconn, but they take this insane empirical approach to handling their employees that is completely unnecessary and will come to kick them in the ass soon enough.
[editline]7th February 2012[/editline]
i don't see how it is surprising that she thinks iPads are cool though lol
everything with fox in its name is awful and abusive
huh

That sucks but doesn't suck that much

SO meta.
Call me insensitive, but I couldn't care less about who makes my products and at what rate they're paid. Foxconn employees aren't enslaved and it's not like it's the only employment opportunity in China.
